He was described in the chronicles of his time as tyrannical and a persecutor of monks. Struck down by a severe illness and fearing for his life, Hugo promised to restore all the abbey's rights and privileges if he was spared. Granted his plea, he performed an act of mortification and humility before the abbey, accompanied by his three sons. He then became a monk."
