  1. 2.  Archibald Newton was born between 1770 and 1775 in St. Mary's County, Maryland; died between 1830 and 1840 in Nelson County, Kentucky.

    Notes:

Hypothesized by several researchers as a son or grandson of Clement Newton who died in St. Mary's County in 1760 and whose will mentions an unborn child. If Archibald is a son, he must have been the unborn child, thus dating his birth back to 1760 or so. But Archibald might also have been a son, rather than a brother, of Gabriel Newton, son of Clement, who died in Washington DC in 1808.

Either way, a Gabriel and an Archibald Newton show up on the 1790 census for Montgomery County, Maryland along with a Clement Newton (presumably Clement Jr.), all living next door to each other. Further, Gabriel Newton married a Henrietta who was the widow of Ignatius Wheatley, and of course our Archibald Newton married a Wheatley.

Archibald married Sarah Wheatley on 20 Sep 1813 in Washington County, Kentucky. Sarah (daughter of John Wheatley and Henrietta) was born about 1774 in St. Mary's County, Maryland. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Sarah Wheatley was born about 1774 in St. Mary's County, Maryland (daughter of John Wheatley and Henrietta).

Generation: 3

  1. 6.  John Wheatley was born about 1745 in Charles County, Maryland (son of Francis Wheatley); died before 22 Jan 1827 in Fredericktown, Washington, Kentucky.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate birth: 1746, Charles County, Maryland

    Notes:

According to Reed-Claggett-Neff, "John sold his plantation in Charles Co, MD in 1790, came to Kentucky in 1793, settled at Fredericktown, Washington Co., KY."

John married Henrietta. Henrietta was born in 1747 in Maryland. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 7.  Henrietta was born in 1747 in Maryland.

    Notes:

Her last name is frequently given as Norris, but we can't help but wonder if this isn't due to confusion with the Henrietta Norris recorded in St. Mary's County records as having married a James Wheatley sometime prior to 1755.

    Children:
    1. 3. Sarah Wheatley was born about 1774 in St. Mary's County, Maryland.

Generation: 4

  1. 12.  Francis Wheatley was born in 1722 in Charles County, Maryland (son of Francis Wheatley and Mary Hardy); died between 19 Oct 1808 and 22 Aug 1809 in Charles County, Maryland.

    • Alternate death: 1809, La Plata, Charles, Maryland

    Notes:

"A copy of the will for Francis Wheatley, dated 19 Oct 1808 [is] in the Wheatley Book. The will leaves property to his children, including several slaves. His wife is not mentioned, leading us to believe she died earlier. -- George Roberds (Roberds, Coleman and Related Families -- ancestry.com)" [Quoted on Reed-Claggett-Neff]

From his will: "To son John Wheatly, negro Matilda."
