Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Richard Prowse was born about 1407 in of Chagford, Devon, England (son of John Prowse and Agnes Bamfield); died after 1449.

    Notes:

The 1564 visitation of Devon puts a "William Prows" between the Richard Prowse who married Margaret Norton and the John Prowse who married Agnes Bamfield. To our knowlwdge, no other source does this.

Richard married Margaret Norton about 1435. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  John Prowse was born about 1347 in of Chagford, Devon, England; died after 1392.

    Notes:

Fitch-Northen notes that the Prowse pedigree in the 1564 visitation of Devon is unsatisfactory prior to this John Prowse. This would also clearly apply to the later visitation compilation edited by John Lambrick Vivian.

John married Maud Cruwys. Maud died after 1389. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Maud Cruwys died after 1389.

    Notes:

In noting that she cannot have been, as claimed in the 1564 vistation of Devon, a daughter of Sir Alexander Cruwys, Charles Fitch-Northen's 1988 "The Trowbridge Ancestry" (citation details below) says that it seems "likely, though not documented, that Maud was the daughter of William Cruwys of East Anstey, co. Devon, who held East Anstey in 1346, presented to East Anstey 27 May 1348, and apparently had no sons." But in the Trowbridge ancestry that Fitch-Northen compiled for the eighth edition of Ancestral Roots (2004), he prudently described her only as "a daughter and heiress of the cadet Prowse family of East Anstey, Devon."

Probably sensibly, Fitch-Northen doesn't bother to argue with Vivian's placement of her as "da. of John Cruwys of Cruwys."
