He supported Thomas, Earl of Lancaster and was taken prisoner following the rebel defeat at the battle of Boroughbridge, 16 Mar 1322. He was imprisoned at Alton Castle whence his grandsons tried to release him. He was pardoned 19 Mar 1323. In 1328, the Sheriff of Staffordshire referred to him as 'so old and infirm.'"
