    Notes:

He was a weaver, until 1716 when he removed to Mansfield, after which he was a yeoman farmer.

"He fought in the French and Indian wars and was taken prisoner. The name of James Hovey, of Malden, was on a roll of English prisoners in the hands of the French and Indians in Canada, which was brought by messengers of the French governor, Vaudreil, in the winter of 1710-11. When he was taken and when he was released does not appear on the records." Notes:

Killed by natives at the same time as a number of other inhabitants of Brookfield.

A number of well-regarded genealogical sources, including Tingley-Meyers, Noyes-Gilman, etc., have him married to Rebecca Dane, daughter of Dr. John Dane who died at Roxbury in 1658. This appears to originate with the 1913 Hovey Book (citation details below). Kyle Dane has a good summary of the evidence that this is mistaken and that James Hovey's wife was Priscilla Warner--which is what Torrey says, in fact.

James married Priscilla Warner on 2 Nov 1670. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  1. 8.  Daniel Hovey was born on 9 Aug 1618 in Waltham Abbey, Essex, England; was christened on 9 Aug 1618 in Waltham Abbey, Essex, England (son of Richard Hovey); died on 24 Apr 1692 in Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts.

    Notes:

At Ipswich 1635, one of the earlier settlers there. Held a variety of town offices. Removed, 1668, to Quaboag, subsequently renamed Brookfield; removed again to Hadley before the massacre at Quabog in 1675 in which his son James was killed. Returned to Ipswich, 1678.

His English origins were discovered by chance in 1905, when John Albree of Swampscott, Massachusetts, researching in the Boston public library, came across a 1621 edition of the Devine Weekes and Workes of Guillaume de Salluste du Bartas (b. 1544) which contained the following inscription on page 200:
Daniel Hovey his boke hee was born in waltham aby ye 9th of Auguft 1618. Son of Richard Hovey of ye fam town. fent him my Mr John Gibons ye minifter of that town. sent him as a token from him in 37. ye yer of the pequod wars. Daniel Hovey.
A further inscription on page 266 read:

    Daniel Hovey
    his Booke fent ouer
to him in 37 at ye pecod war
    time
    ffrom Mr John Gibons
    under hof miniftry he lived
    at Waltham Abey

The book is a 1300-page octavo volume bound in full leather, with the letters D and H stamped on both covers. That it was indeed the property of the 17th-century immigrant Daniel Hovey was easily proved by matching the signature on Daniel Hovey's will at the Essex, Massachusetts probate office. Albree then wrote to the parish clerk of Holy Cross, Waltham, in England, asking if a Daniel Hovey was recorded as having been baptised there on 9 Aug 1618. The clerk wrote back confirming that this was indeed the case, and followed up by sending copies of all the Hovey baptisms, marriages, and burials, plus several issues of the parish's monthly historical publication and five views of the church itself. The publication contained much material on the Rev. John Guibon, who presented the Du Bartas volume to Daniel Hovey -- who must have been a young man of literacy and intelligence when he left for New England at age 17, for his curate to have sent him this book years later.
