From "The Probable English Origin of Mayflower passenger Peter Browne, and His Association with Mayflower Passenger William Mullins," by Caleb Johnson, The American Genealogist 79:3, July 2004:

"The parentage and ancestry of William Mullins have not been conclusively proven. The Mullins family may have been living in Dorking for a considerable period of time prior to William Mullins himself, as the Dorking manor court rolls between 1454 and 1458 mention a Peter and Isabel Moleyn on several occasions. The Dorking parish registers are unfortunately defective for the years 1572 through 1578 -- the time period in which we would expect William to have been baptized. However, there was only one Mullins family in Dorking that was having children during this time period: the John Mullins who married Joan Bridger there on 8 July 1571. Most of their children would have fallen into the 'black hole' in the registers. On 23 September 1582, we see the baptism of their last child, Edward Mullins. On 4 February 1583/4, a Mullins (no Christian name given) was buried. Wc can reasonably assume this burial record was for John Mullins the father, because the next Mullins burial record in the registers, on 8 July 1584, was recorded as the 'son of widow Mullins.' And since son Edward Mullins appears in no subsequent Dorking records, we can speculate that this was the unnamed son who was buried. The following year, on 1 November 1585, the widow Joane Mullins was remarried to Vyncent Benham.
"Two Mullinses appear in later Dorking records; they are assumed to be unrecorded children of John and Joan (Bridger) Mullins. They are the Mayflower passenger, William Mullins, and John Mullins."

William married Alice before 1593. Alice died after 2 Apr 1621 in Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Emigrated on the Mayflower, 1620. Died sometime after the Mayflower set sail on its return voyage, but before the mid-November arrival of the Fortune.

She may or may not have been the mother of Priscilla Mullins.

    Children:
    1. William Mullins died on 12 Feb 1673 in Braintree, Norfolk, Massachusetts.
    2. 13. Priscilla Mullins was born about 1602; died after 1651.

  5. 28.  Edward Southworth was born in 1590 in London, England; died before 1622.

    Notes:

He was for many years and in many genealogical works given as a son of Thomas Southworth (1548-1616) and his wife Rosamond Lister. Were this so he would have been a proven descendant of Edward I, but no actual evidence exists that this was the case.

Edward married Alice Carpenter on 28 May 1613 in Leiden, Netherlands. Alice (daughter of Alexander Carpenter and (Unknown wife of Alexander Carpenter)) was born about 1590; was christened on 3 Aug 1590 in Wrington, Somerset, England; died on 26 Mar 1670 in Plymouth, Plymouth Colony; was buried in Burial Hill, Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachussets. Notes:

His English place of origin is unknown, although he is known to have become a member of the Grocer's Company of London on 3 Mar 1628. Emigrated in 1633 on the Mary and John.

"William Collier [...] came to Plymouth in 1633 as one of the few London-based Merchant Adventurers, a colony investment group, to settle in New England. He was often elected as an Assistant Governor in the thirty-some years between 1634/5 and 1665. He was on the side of the government leaders in the historic 1645 dispute with liberal religious leader William Vassall. During his long life involved in public service, he served on the Council of War and served at times as a commissioner of the United Colonies, a New England colonies military alliance primarily for defense against Indian attack." [Wikipedia]

William married Jane Yates on 16 May 1611 in St. Olave, Southwark, Surrey, England. Jane (daughter of Henry Yates and Alice) was born before 5 Feb 1587; was christened on 5 Feb 1587 in St. Olave, Southwark, Surrey, England; died after 28 Jun 1666 in Duxbury, Plymouth, Massachusetts. Notes:

Possibly a daughter of William Bridger, the only man of that surname seen in Dorking records in the appropriate time period.

    Children:
    1. 26. William Mullins was born before 1572; died on 21 Feb 1621 in Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts.

  3. 58.  Alexander Carpenter was born in of Wrington, Somerset, England.

    Notes:

"'Alexander Carpenter of Wrington' was on 16 December 1600 witness at the Amsterdam marriage of 'Antoine Fetcher' and 'Jenneken Richeman'. He was at Leiden by 1611. In a letter of 19 August 1644 or 1646 to Mary Carpenter of Wrington, sister of his wife Alice (Carpenter) (Southworth) Bradford, William Bradford noted that the mother of the Carpenter sisters had recently died, and invited Mary to join them in Plymouth, which she soon did." [Robert Charles Anderson, The Great Migration Begins, citation details below, p. 314]

Note that Mary Lovering Holman's 1919 Scott Genealogy, which Anderson cites as the best treatment of Alexander Carpenter, misdates William Bradford's aforementioned letter to Mary Carpenter, and thus implicitly Mary Carpenter's emigration, saying that Bradford's letter was written and sent in 1664, which would be seven years after Bradford's death. This error probably came from a too-hasty reading of the original article in which Bradford's letter was published, Frederic Kidder's "Letter of Mary Carpenter", The New England Historical and Genealogical Register 14:195, July 1860. Kidder was working from a copy of Bradford's letter made "a long time previous", and transcribes the letter's date as "August 19, 1664", but in a footnote he says "This is so in the copy, but it must be an error; probably the original read 1644 or 1646, as there is internal evidence that the letter was written around that time."

Also note that William Bradford's letter of 1644 or 1646 says that, Mary Carpenter's mother having recently died, Mary is "in a solitary condition." From which it seems evident that Alexander Carpenter had died earlier.

Alexander married (Unknown wife of Alexander Carpenter). (Unknown died before 19 Aug 1644. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
