    Notes:

"[H]e had, when he died, another wife, named Anne, with whom, from various evidences, he does not appear to have been on the best of terms. He was living at Waltham, and she at Kirton, in a distant part of Lincolnshire, and the only bequest he makes to her in his Will is of 'such goods and implements as she hath in my house at Kirton.'" Metcalfe, ed., The Visitation of the County of Lincoln in 1562-4 [London, 1881], 51). In a Brough pedigree in the same visitation (p. 21), it is stated that John Gilby's wife, Agnes Brough (Ellen's mother), was a daughter of Robert Brough and Mary Newcomen. Several lawsuits, however, show that Brough and Newcomen made a marriage settlement in 1523, far too late for them to be grandparents of Ellen Gilby, who was married to William Femers by 1542." 1. 8.  Oliver Wentworth was born about 1490 in of Goxhill, Glanford Brigg, Lincolnshire, England (son of Thomas Wentworth and Jane Mirfield); died between 7 Dec 1558 and 28 Jan 1559.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate death: Aft 7 Dec 1558

    Notes:

Some experts have expressed doubt that he was a son of Thomas Wentworth of North Elmshall and Jane Mirfield, even though his father Thomas's will of 1522-23, a detailed abstract of which was published in 1884, gives 20 marks to "Olyver Wentworth my sone." At any rate, Oliver Wentworth was clearly of gentry rank to have married Isabel Sothill. And the father of Oliver's mother Jane Mirfield was an Oliver -- not a common name in England at the time. This Oliver is the first known Wentworth thus named.

Oliver married Isabel Sothill before 1520. Isabel (daughter of Richard Sothill and Agnes) was born about 1489; died between 1544 and 7 Dec 1558. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  Isabel Sothill was born about 1489 (daughter of Richard Sothill and Agnes); died between 1544 and 7 Dec 1558.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate death: Aft 1544

    Notes:

The 20 marks bequeathed to Oliver Wentworth in his father's 1522-23 will were stated to be "towarde the mariage of his doughtours", which suggests that the actual date of Oliver's and Isabel's marriage may have been closer to 1510.

    Children:
    1. 4. William Wentworth was born about 1520 in of Waltham, Lincolnshire, England; died on 22 May 1574; was buried on 29 May 1574 in Market Rasen, Lincolnshire, England.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate birth: Abt 1487
    • Alternate birth: 1490
    • Alternate death: Aft 28 Jul 1545

    Notes:

Robert Marbury and Katherine Williamson were half third cousins once removed, both being descendants of Thomas Hawley (d. 1419 or 1420), Katherine through Thomas's first wife Margaret Brewse, and Thomas through an uncertain wife who may have been Dulcia Massey or perhaps an unknown wife between Margaret and Dulcia.

From "The Well-Beloved Mother-in-law of Robert Marbury" by F. N. Craig, citation details below:

In the funeral of Henry VII in 1509, [Robert Marbury] was a yeoman to the King's Grandame (that is, Henry VII's grandmother, Lady Margaret Beaufort, wife successively of Edmund Tudor, Earl of Richmond; Sir Henry Stafford; and Thomas Stanley, 1st Earl of Derby). In 1510, as yeoman usher of the Queen's Chamber, he had a grant to be feodary [i.e., one who holds land of an overlord on condition of homage] of the duchy of Exeter within county Devon, during [the king's] pleasure. In 1513, as Robert Marbury Jr. he was a feofee, along with Robert Marbury Sr. [his uncle], John Lenton [father of his son's future wife] and John Marbury, clerk. In 1514, his cousin William Blount, Lord Mountjoy, was the Queen's Chamberlain. In the same year, Robert Marbury, yeoman usher of the Queen's Chamber, was feodary noted above, for life. In 1517, he was appointed to be serjeant at arms, with 12d. a day in consideration of his services to Queen Catherine. In 1526, his yearly wage as serjeant at arms in the Royal Household was £18 5s, i.e., still 12d. a day.

In the Lincolnshire Rebellion of October 1536, Robert Marbury appears as follows: In the examination of Sir Edward Madeson before the King's Council, Madeson, with his brother John Madeson and both his sons, then went up into Castrefeld to see the number of rebellious and there met Sir Wm. Askew and Marbery the serjeant and one Bonctcene of the Exchequer. The rebels took them all except Boneteync and Marbury. (Let. & Pap. Hen. VIII, 11:225-26, no. 568.)

In a letter from Sir Robert Kyrkham to Richard Cromwell:

"Yesterday night late" he was at Stanforde with Sir William Parre and others when Marbery and Madyson, the King's servants came in, having escaped from the rebels who they say are 20,000... (Let. & Pap. Hen. VIII, 11:248, no. 619).

Robert married Katherine Williamson before 1524. Katherine (daughter of John Williamson and Jane Angevine) was born about 1508; died on 17 Aug 1525. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 13.  Katherine Williamson was born about 1508 (daughter of John Williamson and Jane Angevine); died on 17 Aug 1525.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate death: 11 Aug 1525

    Notes:

Katherine Williamson and Robert Marbury were half third cousins once removed, both being descendants of Thomas Hawley (d. 1419 or 1420), Katherine through Thomas's first wife Margaret Brewse, and Thomas through an uncertain wife who may have been Dulcia Massey or perhaps an unknown wife between Margaret and Dulcia.

    Children:
    1. 6. William Marbury was born about Jun 1525 in of Girsby in Burgh-upon-Bain, Lincolnshire, England; died before 16 Nov 1581.

  7. 14.  John Lenton was born in of Aldwinkle, Northamptonshire, England.

    Notes:

Notwithstanding the claim made in several online sources, the John Lenton who was father to William Marbury's wife Agnes was not the John Lenton who married Elizabeth Shepherd. That latter marriage, as shown by Walter Goodwin Davis in "Shepherd of Littlecote" (New England Historical and Genealogical Register 118:251, Oct 1964), took place on 18 May 1585, making it obvious it was a later John Lenton that married this Elizabeth.

    Children:
    1. 7. Agnes Lenton was born about 1525 in of Aldwinkle, Northamptonshire, England; died after Nov 1581.
