    Notes:

Evidence that George Thompson was preceded by two Robert Thompsons, not just one as most genealogies show, can be found here at the Thompson DNA Project.

"[Robert Thompson's] son George Thompson did not marry Anne Clarke--I thought we'd put that one to bed a long time ago. He m. first, Rebecca Medley and second, Grace Greenwell." [Linda Reno, MDSTMARY-L, 13 Jan 2003.]

  2. 5.  Mary died before 1709.

    Notes:

Reno, Donnelly, and Early Colonial Settlers of Southern Maryland and Virginia's Northern Neck Counties all call her Mary French. Reno gives no parents. ECSSMVNNC gives her parents as James French and Elizabeth Meekin. Donnelly gives her parents as James French and Elizabeth Carberry.

    Children:
    1. 2. George Thompson died on 6 Feb 1750 in Rocky Point, St. Mary's County, Maryland.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate death: 1 May 1695, St. Mary's County, Maryland

    Notes:

Regarding his year of birth, Donnelly in John Medley (1615-1660) notes "Age 26 in 1679 ARCHIVES OF MARYLAND 51:269-271, which also states he was a son of JOHN MEDLEY dec'd."

William married Ann Reynolds. Ann (daughter of George Reynolds and Dorothy) died before 1702. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Generation: 4

  1. 12.  John Medley was born about 1615 in England; died in 1660 in Newtown Hundred, St. Mary's County, Maryland.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate birth: Abt 1616, England

    Notes:

Arrived in Maryland 1635 as an indentured servant of Thomas Cornwalleys. Represented Newtown Hundred in the lower house of the Maryland legislature, 1650 and 1651.

We know he died in 1660 because on 19 Feb of that year he was subpoened to testify in the case of Stiles vs. Piles, and then later in 1660 James Beane filed a lawsuit against John Medley's estate.

Mary Louise Donnelly's John Medley 1615-1660 gives the parents of this John Medley as John Medley and Susannah Rhodes who married 8 Feb 1601 in Elland, Yorkshire. Problems with this include the fact that the elder of these John Medleys was a Protestant while the immigrant was a Catholic, and the fact that the older John Medley was a parish clerk whereas the immigrant was illiterate.

John married Elizabeth Thompson. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 13.  Elizabeth Thompson (daughter of William Thompson and Anne).

    Notes:

According to Mary Louise Donnelly's John Medley (1615-1660), Elizabeth arrived in Maryland 1641.

    Children:
    1. John Medley was born in 1647 in Newtown Hundred, St. Mary's County, Maryland; died before 19 Aug 1676.
    2. 6. William Medley was born about 1653 in St. Mary's County, Maryland; died before 30 Apr 1695 in St. Mary's County, Maryland.

  3. 14.  George Reynolds died in 1668.

    Notes:

Donnelly in John Medley (1615-1660) (citation details below) says he was "mentioned on 10/1/1663 as the Door Keeper of the Lower House and for his services received 300 pounds of tobacco."

George married Dorothy. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 15.  Dorothy
    Children:
    1. 7. Ann Reynolds died before 1702.

Generation: 5

  1. 26.  William Thompson was born about 1597; died between 3 Jan 1649 and 11 Jan 1649 in Newtown Hundred, St. Mary's County, Maryland.

    Notes:

Claimed by some as a passenger on the Ark or the Dove, but he's not one of the "qualifying ancestors" for the Order of First Families of Maryland.

Arrival in Maryland given variously as 1634 and 1641, the latter more likely.

Mary Louise Donnelly's John Medley 1615-1660 gives his birth year as 1594, referencing Archives of Maryland 4: 354. But that page of the Archives, on which "Willm Tompson" is described as "aged 50 yeares or thereabouts", appears to be from "Court and Testamentary Business" conducted in 1647. Possibly Donnelly was misled by the presence of the date "Janvary the 14th 1644" toward the top of page 354, which appears to refer to the case referenced in that paragraph, not to the overall page.

William married Anne. Anne died before 1667. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 27.  Anne died before 1667.
    Children:
    1. 13. Elizabeth Thompson
