Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Raymond B. Hayden was born on 11 Feb 1821 in Bardstown, Nelson, Kentucky (son of Lewis Hayden and Mary "Polly" Dant); died on 11 Jun 1885 in Bardstown, Nelson, Kentucky; was buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Bardstown, Nelson, Kentucky.

    Notes:

He was the distiller who devised the Old Grand-Dad brand of bourbon (or, as the early labels called it, "sour mash") whiskey, which first appeared in 1882. He was a lifelong bachelor, and according to several online sources, was found dead in his orchard with a bottle of poison by his side, and his death was ruled a suicide.

We note that if the Church had believed that he committed suicide, it would be unlikely for him to be buried at St. Joseph's.

Generation: 2

Upon his death, LEWIS HAYDEN's 13 children became heirs to this property. LEWIS and Mary apparently never lived in Daviess County. Both are buried at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Bardstown, Kentucky." [John Medley, citation details below]

Lewis married Mary "Polly" Dant on 13 Feb 1810. Mary (daughter of Joseph Dant and Elizabeth Belinder Shercliffe) was born in 1795 in Nelson County, Kentucky; died on 10 May 1879 in Bardstown, Nelson, Kentucky; was buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Bardstown, Nelson, Kentucky. Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Basil HaydenBasil Hayden was born on 2 Jan 1744 in St. Andrew's Parish, St. Mary's County, Maryland (son of George Hayden and Charity); died between 21 Jun 1804 and 6 Aug 1804; was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Holy Cross, Marion, Kentucky.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate death: 15 Jun 1804, Washington County, Kentucky

    Notes:

After his father died when he was nine or ten, he was raised by his mother and her second husband, William Morgan.

His birthdate is widely given as 2 Jan 1743/4, i.e. 2 Jan 1744, but a record of his father's probate from 7 Aug 1755 says he was 12 years old at that point, which would indicate he was born in 1743.

On a "Catholic Pioneers" roadside historical marker placed by the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

"Basil Hayden, Sr., led 25 Maryland Catholic families to settle near here, on Pottinger's Creek, 1785. Father Whelan said first Mass in Ky. here in 1787. First Catholic church west of Alleghenies built here in 1792. First monks, 1805, Trappist Fathers (Cistercians). Present church erected in 1823, under direction of famous Belgian missionary, Charles Nerinckx."

The marker is on N. St. Francis Road (highway 527) just south of Holy Cross Road (highway 457), next to Holy Cross Cemetery, about five miles west-northwest of the Maker's Mark distillery in Loretto.

It would probably surprise many people in, oh, say, Santa Fe, New Mexico, whose first Catholic church was built in 1626, to hear that the "first Catholic church west of Alleghenies" was built in 1792. The assumption being, of course, that the real history of the United States is that of white English-speakers gradually moving east to west. This is the very definition of how marginalization works.

    Will of Basil Hayden:

In the name of God, amen. I, Basil Hayden, of the County of Washington and State of Kentucky, being sick and expecting short to die, but of sound memory and understanding, do constitute and ordain this to be my last will and testament. My soul I resign to my Creator who gave it me, and my body I desire to be buried in the place assigned for that purpose, at the chapel adjoining my plantation, and to my worldly goods, after all my just debts are paid, I will and bequest in manner and form following, to wit:

I will and bequeath unto my eldest son, Stanislaus Hayden, two Negroes, namely Clare and George, which he has now in his possession to belong to him and his heirs forever, also twenty pounds in trade to satisfy him for his demand he claims of me for labor and to make up his losses in moving. I give and bequeath unto my wife, Henrietta Hayden, my land and premises, for and during her natural life, reserving therein a home and good maintenance for my two daughters, Ann and Teresa, and my son, Edward, for and during their single lives. It is also my will and desire that my two daughters and last-mentioned son have a home and maintenance in said land during the single lives after their mother’s death, and then the land to be sold with reserve and the profits equally divided amongst my heirs. I also give my wife, Henrietta, for and during her natural life, the following Negroes, namely Jack, James and his wife Hannah, a woman, Nell, Easter and her son Matthew and Poll, one bed and furniture and the [illegible], also a bay mare named Madam, the mare to dispose of as she may think proper, but the Negroes and land and the profits thereof to be equally divided amongst my heirs at her death, except the reserve before made. I give and bequeath unto my son, Robert Hayden, a Negro woman named Mary and a boy named Samuel, which Negroes he has now in his possession, to be his and his heirs forever. I give unto my son Basil Hayden the Negroes he now has in his possession, namely, Sarah and Luke, to him and his heirs forever. I give unto my daughter, Ann Hayden, two Negroes named Bill and Isaac, to belong to her and the heirs of her body lawfully begotten, if any, if not, at her death to be equally divided amongst my heirs. I give unto my daughter Teresa Hayden two negroes named Harry and Charles, to belong to her and the heirs of her body lawfully begotten, if any, if not, at her death to be equally divided amongst my heirs. I give and bequeath unto my wife’s son, William Hayden, one negro boy named Nace, and one bed and furniture and it is my will that he shall come in for half share only of all the distributions which shall hereafter be made of my estate except the land, which he is to have no part of. I give unto my son, Lewis Hayden, two negroes named Joseph and Susan and also the yellow sorrel mare and young colt. I give unto my son, Edward, two Negroes named Clement and Clare, daughter of Nell. It is also my will and desire in case any of the Negroes, willed to Ann, Teresa, Lewis or Edward, should die before the death of my wife that their loss or losses shall be made good together out of the Negroes willed to my wife funding her life before distribution of those Negroes shall be made amongst my heirs. I leave one Negro boy, Jeremiah, to be sold it if be necessary to pay my debts, but if it can be done without, not to sell him. I given unto the Rev. Mr. Badin and those he may thing proper to make his heir a boy named Gerrard, also my right and title in and unto two hundred acres of land he now lives on. It is my will that the Negroes willed to Lewis be hired and the profits reserved for him until he comes of age and by his working on the plantation it is my will for him to stay with his mother after this year until he is twenty-one years old, but if he will not work I wish him to have some more schooling and bound to some decent and profitable trade. The profits of the other Negroes willed to Ann, Teresa and Edward, I wish their mother to make use of in clothing and maintaining them decently during her life. I leave my son Basil Hayden, Executor, to this my last will and testament and all the residue of my estate not legaced in this will to be dealt with according to the directions of the law. In testimony of this my last will and testament I do hereon set my hand and affix my seal the 15th day of June In the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and four.

    June the 21st 1804

In addition to the legacies willed to my two daughters, Ann and Teresa, and my two sons, Lewis and Edward, I give and bequeath unto them ten pounds cash and a bed and furniture each, to make them up even with those children I have assisted when they married and left me. It is also my will that the provisions now made for the family support, together with the crop now on hand be not counted in the estate, but to be applied to the support of my wife and the family. I also give and bequeath my saddle and greatcoat to my son Lewis. Witness my hand and seal the date above.

  1. 32.  Francis Heydon died before 12 Jun 1694 in St. Mary's County, Maryland.

    Notes:

Earliest known paternal ancestor of PNH. He was probably in Virginia before his arrival in Maryland, possibly before 1665. He and his wife arrived in Maryland 1678, according to the notes of Dr. Lois Green Carr. His surname was also spelled Heyden.

Generations of Hayden family researchers, including Patrick himself, have spent a lot of energy examining the ancestry of this Francis Heydon, ancestor of the Maryland and Kentucky Haydens. It's been asserted that he was the same Francis Hayden that was christened in Watford, Hertfordshire on 14 Aug 1628, and that he was a great-grandson of the armigerous Francis Heydon who married Frances Longueville. Unfortunately, there are too many inconsistencies within this narrative. There is no positive proof that the Francis who died in Maryland in 1694 is the same person who was born in Watford in 1628. And there are significant problems both with the much-reproduced idea that Francis's father was the Edward Heydon who married Ellenor Whitehead--and with the equally-widespread idea that this Edward's father, another Edward Hayden who married a Frances Burr, was the same Edward as the eldest son of Francis Hayden who married Frances Longueville.

It's also widely asserted that the Watford Heydons were secret Catholics -- see, for instance, this Find a Grave page for Francis, which says, echoing decades of Hayden family legend, that "[i]n the year 1535 a Haydon family friend, Sir Thomas More, was beheaded, because he wouldn't denounce his Catholic faith. The Haydon family were devout Catholics, and feared for their lives. They and many other Catholic families had to worship in secret or probably be put to death." There is no evidence that the Watford Heydons were socially acquainted with Thomas More, and there is no evidence whatsoever that they were Catholic recusants. Indeed, the armigerous Francis Heydon (1540-1606) of Watford, supposedly the great-grandfather of Francis-the-Maryland-immigrant, husband of Frances Longueville, was granted a market in Watford in the 1590s by Queen Elizabeth -- who was very much not in the habit of granting valuable political favors to anyone associated with a family that had the suspicion of recusancy attached to it. The immigrant Francis Heydon, like many generations of his descendants, was a vigorously orthodox Roman Catholic of great ferocity, which further argues against his supposed descent from the visibly pliable and conformist Watford family.

    Will of Francis Heydon:

[Hall of Records, Wills, Liber 6, ff. 134-135.]

Date of Francis's will (and of his death):

From "The Hiden Family" by Martha Woodruff Hiden, in Genealogies of Virginia Families, from Tyler's Quarterly Historical and Genealogical Magazine, volume II. Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Company, 1981:

"Francis died 1694 testate, (Wills 6, p. 134) leaving his wife Thomasine executrix and sole legatee. His will, witnessed by Jno. Ba. Carberry, John Morris and Thomas Newton, is dated April 30, 1697 and proved June 12, 1694. That '1697' is an error is proved by a suit brought in 1694 by Thomas Allman against Thomasine Heyden (Provincial Court Judgments T. L. #1 (1694-96) pp. 117, 185, 194). The sheriff reported that he had replevied certain personal property of the defendant. The suit could not have been brought in Thomasine's name had her husband been alive, hence we know Francis died prior to June 12, 1694 when his will was offered for probate."

In her Maryland and Virginia Colonials: Genealogies of Some Colonial Families (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Company, 1991), Sharon J. Doliante agrees with Ms. Hiden on this issue, and adds that "It will be noted that [Francis and Thomasina's eldest child] Penelope styled herself 'dau. & heiress of Francis Heydon, deceased', in 1696."

Francis married Thomasine Butler before Jan 1677. Thomasine died between 19 Sep 1701 and 27 Nov 1702 in St. Mary's County, Maryland. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 33.  Thomasine ButlerThomasine Butler died between 19 Sep 1701 and 27 Nov 1702 in St. Mary's County, Maryland.

    Notes:

Her birth surname was definitely Butler. In 1677 "THOMASIN the wife of FRANCIS HEYDEN of St. Maries County" was granted administration of the estate of her late brother Thomas Butler "late of Charles County deceased."

It is tempting to speculate that Thomasin may have been related in some way to the gateway-ancestor Butlers of Kent Island, Maryland and Westmoreland County, Virginia, but no evidence exists that her brother Thomas Butler of Charles County, Maryland was connected to them. It is known for certain that other people named Butler were in Maryland and Virginia at the same time as the Kent Island and Westmoreland family descended from John and Joan Butler of Little Birch Hall, Essex.

Abstract of Thomasin (Butler) Hayden's will:

    Hayden, Thomasin, St. Mary's Co., 19th Sept., 1701; 27th Nov., 1702.

To dau. Penelope Allman, 12 pence.

To son William, ex., dwelling plantation "Small Hopes." In event of his death without issue, to pass to dau. Mary Reeder and hrs.

Son William and dau. Mary afsd., residuary legatees.

    Notes:

Planter and householder. Literate. Called "Mr." After the death of his parents when he was five or six, he was raised by his father's friend Luke Gardiner.

His second wife Elizabeth Slye was a daughter of Robert Slye and Susanna Gerard. Susanna Gerard was a daughter of early Maryland immigrant (and Edward I descendant) Dr. Thomas Gerard and his wife Susanna Snow. But more interestingly in connection with American history, Susanna Gerard's second husband, following the death of Robert Slye, was John Coode, one of the three leaders of Maryland's Protestant revolution of 1689 (and also a shadowy and malign figure in John Barth's 1960 novel The Sot-Weed Factor). Susanna's sister Elizabeth Gerard was the wife of Nehemiah Blackiston, another of the leaders of the 1689 uprising, who was a son of regicide judge John Blackiston. Her sister Mary Gerard was the wife of Kenelm Cheseldine, the third of the revolution's leaders. And finally, her sister Frances Gerard was, in the fourth of her five marriages, the third wife of Col. John Washington (1633-1677), great-grandfather of George Washington.

Edward married Honora on 27 Apr 1683 in St. Clement's Hundred, St. Mary's County, Maryland. Honora was born about 1667 in "Strand," St. Mary's County, Maryland; died after 1694. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  5. 42.  John Tant was born before 1645; died before 12 Nov 1702 in St. Mary's County, Maryland.

    Notes:

First recorded in 1673, an immigrant servant; free later that same year. A "taylor" in 1675, a planter by 1676, with one slave, later four slaves and one servant. Dr. Lois Green Carr's records (citation details below) call his wife only "Margaret", but she notes his their household also contained "Patrick Blomfield, son of John Blomfield."

His will of 17 Oct 1702 bequeaths to his son James and heirs, personalty, and also confirms to James and heirs the estate "Dry Dockett". To son Mark at 18, all of his other lands, except if Mark dies without issue, lands to pass to daughters … and "to Japhaele and Maryeena Blumfield and Ellinor Dickins, personalty". Thus another Bloomfield connection to the Tant family.

John married Margaret Bloomfield before 1665 in St. Mary's County, Maryland. Margaret was born between 1651 and 1654; died in 1726 in St. Mary's County, Maryland. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
