Soldier, US Civil War, Union. 12th Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry.

According to Descendants of Henry Isaac Newton, in 1862 Newton enlisted "in the Union Army of the Cumberland, 12th Kentucky Cavalry. A corporal by the time the war ends, Newton would be captured in Sweetwater TN during Burnside's abortive campaign to push south and spend nearly a year in Confederate prison."

Newton Mammoth Cave Smoked Names 1866

At the end of the benches past Fat Man's Misery and outside the bathrooms Isaac and his brother John smoked their names in the ceiling in 1866. This act was conflated with his POW status to live in family memory as "Newton was kept prisoner by the Confederates in Mammoth Cave." However, he was captured in eastern Tennessee and the Confederacy never controlled Mammoth Cave and nobody kept prisoners there at any time. Growing up, I heard stories about this from my mom, his great-granddaughter, and in August 1973, at the age of 19, I took a camping trip with two college pals which began at Gettysburg, went thru the Blue Ridge and into W Va, thru the Cumberland Gap into KY and on to Mammoth Cave and finally Owensboro. At Mammoth Cave, I asked at the Park Service information station whether or not there was an index of names in the ceiling of the cave. The question was greeted with derisive laughter, but the senior man said some names were well remembered and I should go ahead and tell them who I was looking for. "Isaac Newton, my great-great grandfather, who is said to have been a POW here during the Civil War," I replied. Lots of head shaking. "No. No POWs were kept here. And I don't remember seeing that name. Anyone else?" No. More head shaking. I turned away from the window, feeling like the whole trip was a stupid waste. A second later, as I took my third or forth step away, I heard a young woman call "Wait...wait..." I stopped and turned. Leaning out the window, a young woman my age, probably an intern. "What name are you looking for?" "Isaac Newton," I called out. She beamed. "You're not going to believe this, but I noticed that name yesterday. It's at the very end of the benches at the bottom of the cave, outside the bathrooms. You get there just after you go through 'Fat Man's Misery.'" And indeed, it was. News of actually finding it and having a location clearly excited my Great Aunt Martine when I arrived in Owensboro. To me, the importance of this story is that oral traditions are extremely important sources of information, and are not to be dismissed, but rather, cajoled into revealing their truths.

Henry married Margaret Matilda Lewis on 15 Feb 1859 in Breckinridge County, Kentucky. Margaret (daughter of Joseph O. Lewis and Ann Nancy Hinton) was born on 10 Apr 1840 in Breckinridge County, Kentucky; died on 22 Dec 1919 in Rome, Daviess, Kentucky; was buried on 23 Dec 1919 in St. Raphael's Cemetery, West Louisville, Daviess, Kentucky. Lewis and Ann Nancy Hinton); died on 22 Dec 1919 in Rome, Daviess, Kentucky; was buried on 23 Dec 1919 in St. Raphael's Cemetery, West Louisville, Daviess, Kentucky.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate birth: 10 Apr 1839, Kentucky

    • Alternate birth: 10 Apr 1842, Breckinridge County, Kentucky
    • Alternate death: 22 Dec 1919, Owensboro, Daviess, Kentucky

    Notes:

Listed in the 1911 Owensboro city directory as "Newton, Margaret (wid. Henry), bds. 819 Mulberry."

The 1910 US census lists her as a "farmer" and as an "employer".

Her death date has often been given as 16 Dec 1919, or (as on her Find a Grave page) 23 Dec 1919, but the actual date given on her death certificate is simply Dec 1919. The doctor (Edward Barr) states that he has been attending her since 1 Feb 1919 and that 16 Dec 1919 is the last date on which he saw her alive. His signature on the death certificate is dated 22 Dec 1919. Furthermore, the Owensboro Messenger for Tuesday, 23 Dec 1919, says she died "Monday morning", which would indicate the previous day, 22 Dec 1919, the same day her death certificate was signed. The death certificate also states, in agreement with the next day's story in the Messenger, that she is to be buried the next day, 23 Dec, at St. Raphael's.

Owensboro Messenger, Tuesday morning, December 23, 1919:

Mrs Margaret M. Newton, one of the oldest and most highly esteemed women of Daviess county, died Monday morning at 7 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Walter Elder, in the St. Raphael neighborhood, after an illness lasting for several months.

Newton of Daviess county, and S. T. Newton of Jefferson county. The deceased is also survived by fifty-six grandchildren and forty-eight great grandchildren.

The funeral will take place from St. Raphael's Catholic church this morning at 9 o'clock with service by Rev. Father Higgins, with interment in the church cemetery.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Archibald Newton was born between 1770 and 1775 in St. Mary's County, Maryland; died between 1830 and 1840 in Nelson County, Kentucky.

    Notes:

Hypothesized by several researchers as a son or grandson of Clement Newton who died in St. Mary's County in 1760 and whose will mentions an unborn child. If Archibald is a son, he must have been the unborn child, thus dating his birth back to 1760 or so. But Archibald might also have been a son, rather than a brother, of Gabriel Newton, son of Clement, who died in Washington DC in 1808.

Either way, a Gabriel and an Archibald Newton show up on the 1790 census for Montgomery County, Maryland along with a Clement Newton (presumably Clement Jr.), all living next door to each other. Further, Gabriel Newton married a Henrietta who was the widow of Ignatius Wheatley, and of course our Archibald Newton married a Wheatley.

Archibald married Sarah Wheatley on 20 Sep 1813 in Washington County, Kentucky. Sarah (daughter of John Wheatley and Henrietta) was born about 1774 in St. Mary's County, Maryland. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  Sarah Wheatley was born about 1774 in St. Mary's County, Maryland (daughter of John Wheatley and Henrietta).

    Notes:

    Also known as Sarah Wheatly.

    6. Uriah H Newton was born in 1817 in Nelson County, Kentucky; died in 1850.

  3. 10.  Jonathan Cheshire was born about 1785 in Maryland (son of John Cheshire and Sarah); died between 11 Oct 1871 and 1880 in Bullitt County, Kentucky.

    Other Events and Attributes:

  4. 11.  Elizabeth Hollis (daughter of David Hollis and Elizabeth Lewis); died in Oct 1869 in Leaches, Bullitt, Kentucky.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate death: Between 1860 and 1870, Bullitt County, Kentucky
    • Alternate death: Bef 1870

    Notes:

"On the 1870 Mortality Schedule for Bullitt Co. KY is: Elizabeth Cheshire died October 1869, Bullitt Leaches KY. Died at 84 of dropsy of the heart. b. VA. Right age and place to be Jonathan's wife." [Dupaix, citation details below.]

No birth record for her has been found. Her maiden name was recorded in Johnson County, Indiana marriage records when her sons John S. and Thomas Cheshire married their fourth wives. DNA matching via ancestry.com suggests that her parents were David Hollis and Elizabeth Lewis.

    Children:
    1. 5. Eliza Jane Cheshire was born in 1814 in Bullitt County, Kentucky; died before 1865.

  5. 12.  William R Lewis was born about 1782 in Maryland (son of William Lewis and Sarah Stuart); died between 1876 and 1870 in Kentucky.

  7. 14.  Vachel John Hinton was born on 13 Nov 1779 in Maryland (son of Benjamin Hinton); died on 17 Jan 1873 in Breckinridge County, Kentucky; was buried in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Axtel, Breckinridge, Kentucky.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate birth: 12 Nov 1779, Maryland

    Notes:

[The origin of the document below is unknown to us. We think Vachel John Hinton was more likely born in or around 1779, and we're pretty sure there's no actual evidence for the name of his mother, but other than that it's interesting.]

The Incredible Life of Vachel John Hinton
    Vachel John Hinton, November 12 or 13, 1771 - January 17, 1873

Vachel John Hinton was born on November 12 or 13, 1771 in Maryland to his parents, Benjamin Hinton and Sarah Hopkins-Hinton. In 1791 Vachel arrived in Kentucky and settled in Breckinridge County, Kentucky. Tragically, Vachel became completely deaf by the mid-1790s. He communicated for the rest of his life partly by writing on a slate that he carried around with him. Although he could not hear, he never lost the use of speech, but his articulation was much impaired by age.

Mary Nancy Mattingly became his first wife on February 17, 1810 in Breckinridge County. Mary was born on May 10, 1790 in Kentucky to James Barton Mattingly and his wife, Emma. This marriage produced three children, all girls: Ann Nancy Hinton, born on December 26, 1810; Mary Ann Hinton, born in 1812, and Mary Ellen, born on September 13, 1813. Sadly, Mary Nancy Mattingly lost her life on September 26, 1813 when her youngest daughter was not yet two weeks old.

Waiting over three years to remarry, Vachel married Jane Elizabeth Mattingly on January 20, 1817. Ignatius Mattingly and his wife, Sarah Catherine Fowler-Mattingly were her parents. Jane was born in Kentucky about 1792. This marriage would produce a total of eleven children, all born in Breckinridge County, Kentucky: John, born in December, 1817; Sarah M., born in 1825; Joseph H., born on March 25, 1820; James, born on November 14, 1822; Catherine, born in 1824; Austin, born in November, 1825; Nancy, born in 1828; Allen L., born on December 15, 1829; Ezekial, born in 1831; William, born in 1834, and Elizabeth, born in 1836.

On January 17, 1873, Vachel John Hinton died at 102 years of age in the county he had help settle in 1791, that of Breckinridge County, Kentucky. His obituary described him as a devout Catholic who had for a number of years devoted much time to prayer. He was buried at Mt. Carmel Cemetery (once called St. Anthony) in Axtel, Breckinridge County, Kentucky. He left seventy-three children and grandchildren.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate birth: 1746, Charles County, Maryland

According to Reed-Claggett-Neff, "John sold his plantation in Charles Co, MD in 1790, came to Kentucky in 1793, settled at Fredericktown, Washington Co., KY."

John married Henrietta. Henrietta was born in 1747 in Maryland. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 19.  Henrietta was born in 1747 in Maryland.

    Notes:

Her last name is frequently given as Norris, but we can't help but wonder if this isn't due to confusion with the Henrietta Norris recorded in St. Mary's County records as having married a James Wheatley sometime prior to 1755.

    Children:
    1. 9. Sarah Wheatley was born about 1774 in St. Mary's County, Maryland.

  3. 20.  John Cheshire was born about 1753 in Virginia; died on 10 Aug 1836 in Floyd County, Indiana.

    Notes:

Also spelled Chesser, Chessher, Chesshir, Cheser, etc.

He fought in the 10th Virginia regiment in 1778-79, during which time it was redesignated the 6th. He appears to have been for a time encamped at Valley Forge, although only after the famously difficult winter of 1777-78.

He appears in Maryland in the 1790 census, owning no slaves. In Mason County, Kentucky (which was created in 1788) by 1795; in Washington County, Kentucky on the 1800 and 1810 censuses. In the 1820 census he is in Little York, Hardin County, Kentucky. In 1829 he is found in Floyd County, Indiana, applying for a pension.

John B. Cheshire's pension application (as transcribed on his Wikitree page):

John married Sarah about 1774 in Maryland. Sarah was born about 1757 in Virginia; died between 1840 and 1841 in Floyd County, Indiana. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 21.  Sarah was born about 1757 in Virginia; died between 1840 and 1841 in Floyd County, Indiana.

David married Elizabeth Lewis on 22 Feb 1802 in Madison County, Kentucky. Elizabeth (daughter of Abraham Lewis and Esther Todd) was born on 29 Oct 1774 in Rowan County, North Carolina; died before 1850 in Cannon County, Tennessee; was buried in Brawley's Fork Cemetery, Readyville, Cannon, Tennessee. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 23.  Elizabeth Lewis was born on 29 Oct 1774 in Rowan County, North Carolina (daughter of Abraham Lewis and Esther Todd); died before 1850 in Cannon County, Tennessee; was buried in Brawley's Fork Cemetery, Readyville, Cannon, Tennessee.

    Notes:

She is mentioned in her father's will of 1813, as "my daughter Betsey Hollis", to whom he gives (along with his daughter Polly White) "one hundred and sixty acres of land lying in Wain County Indeana Teritory the southwest sexcion township the twelf raing the first the above to be equally to be divided in quantity and quality to them and their heirs forever."

We tend to doubt that her middle name was "Todd", as claimed by her Find a Grave page, or even that she had a middle name, given how rare middle names were in the time and place of her birth.

    Children:
    1. 11. Elizabeth Hollis died in Oct 1869 in Leaches, Bullitt, Kentucky.

  7. 24.  William Lewis was born about 1750; died between 1790 and 1795.

    Notes:

William Lewis is found in the 1776 Prince George Parish Census as follows:

    William Lewis 26
    Sarah 19
    White males 15-50 1
    White females above 16 1

William married Sarah Stuart about 1776 in Maryland. Sarah was born on 29 Oct 1757 in Maryland; died on 5 May 1850 in Breckinridge County, Kentucky; was buried in Saint Romuald Cemetery, Hardinsburg, Breckinridge, Kentucky. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  8. 25.  Sarah Stuart was born on 29 Oct 1757 in Maryland; died on 5 May 1850 in Breckinridge County, Kentucky; was buried in Saint Romuald Cemetery, Hardinsburg, Breckinridge, Kentucky.

    Notes:

    Often spelled Stewart.

"In 1800 Sarah is found in Hardy Co., VA (now WV) with her second husband, Francis Ignatius Coomes, Jr., on Hunting Ridge where Scaggs Run empties into the North River. (Inkerman, WV) "

Her second husband is said to have been a Francis Ignatius Coomes (1767-1851), whose Find a Grave page is questionable in two ways. First, the gravestone shown says only "Ignatius Coomes." Second, he is given as a son of this couple, 6XG-grandparents of PNH. And yet the very detailed account of that couple at the Combs-Coombs &c. site says nothing about the elder Francis having as his middle name Ignatius, nor about them having any offspring named Francis, Ignatius, or both.

    Children:
    1. 12. William R Lewis was born about 1782 in Maryland; died between 1876 and 1870 in Kentucky.

  9. 28.  Benjamin Hinton was born about 1760 in Maryland (son of Veitchel Hinton and Margaret); died before 19 Apr 1821.

  2. 44.  John Hollis was born in 1736 in England; died on 27 Aug 1832 in Cannon County, Tennessee; was buried in Brawley's Fork Cemetery, Readyville, Cannon, Tennessee.

    Notes:

Said by some to have been born in or near London; said by his Wikitree entry, without obvious proof, to have been the John Hollis baptised 10 Jul 1737 in Risely, Bedfordshire, a son of John Hollis and Lydia Dickins. That he was born in England seems clear from his gravestone inscription.

He served several terms of enlistment in the North Carolina militia during the Revolution, under Gen. Griffith Rutherford and others. He is said to have on one occasion been captured and then escaped. After the war he was an early member of the Jersey Settlement Baptist Church in Rowan County, mentioned several times in their records as an elder. With his wife and their youngest son Micajah, he emigrated to Tennessee in 1808-09.

John married Mary about 1767. Mary died before 1820 in Rutherford County, Tennessee; was buried in Brawley's Fork Cemetery, Readyville, Cannon, Tennessee. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  3. 45.  Mary died before 1820 in Rutherford County, Tennessee; was buried in Brawley's Fork Cemetery, Readyville, Cannon, Tennessee.

    Notes:

We know of no evidence that she was Mary Trantham or Mary Groom, as widely asserted online. A Mary Groom married a John Hollis in Baltimore in 1749, but our John Hollis would have been in his early teens at the time.

    Children:
    1. 22. David Hollis was born in 1769 in Rowan County, North Carolina; died on 16 Oct 1852 in Cannon County, Tennessee; was buried in Brawley's Fork Cemetery, Readyville, Cannon, Tennessee.

  4. 46.  Abraham Lewis was born on 29 May 1751 in Chester County, Pennsylvania (son of Abraham Lewis and Rebekah Davis); died on 3 Jun 1813 in Madison County, Kentucky.

    Notes:

He appears on the roster of North Carolina soldiers in the Revolution, in the Salisbury district militia. Like the father of his son-in-law David Hollis, he was a charter member of the Reconstituted Jersey Settlement Baptist Church.

Abraham married Esther Todd on 29 Oct 1770. Esther (daughter of Thomas Todd and Elizabeth) was born on 16 Apr 1750 in Easton, Northampton, Pennsylvania; died on 25 Jul 1821 in Wayne County, Indiana. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Also Vachel Hinton.

    Revolutionary War, Virginia militia. (Probably/possibly).

A Vachel Hinton who may be this one is listed on the DAR's web site as DAR Ancestor # A055453, with the following information:

    Service: VIRGINIA
    Rank: PRIVATE
    Birth: CIRCA 1737 MARYLAND
Death: ANTE 7-4-1825 FLEMING CO KENTUCKY
Service Source: GWATHMEY, HIST REG OF VA IN THE REV, P 380 [*]
Service Description: 1) ENSIGN WILLIAM COLVIN, MILITIA
    Residence: VIRGINIA
    Spouse: (1) MARGARET X (2) NANCY ROY

Note: GWATHMEY, HIST REG OF VA etc. would have to be John H. Gwathmey, Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution, 1775–1783, first published 1938, reprinted by the Genealogical Publishing Company of Baltimore in 1979.

Alternately, Henry C. Peden, Jr., Marylanders to Kentucky 1775-1825, p.72 (Westminister, MD: Heritage Books, 2006) says that "Vachel (Vitchel) HINTON was a native of Maryland and served in the Revolutionary War in Washington County, Pennsylvania."

Diana Gale Matthiesen says: "Please note that I believe the Vachel HINTONs are mixed up, in part because there are more of them than supposed--there are at least seven--and that I have not got them sorted out yet. I believe there is a possibility that the Vachel HINTON who married Margaret [HOWARD?] is not the same Vachel HINTON who married Mrs. Nancy ROY because census records show the latter to have been born after 1765 while the former was born ca. 1737. However, other records suggest there was only one Vachel HINTON in the county at this time, so the census record may be in error. I think we should keep an open mind to the possibility that these are two different Vachel HINTONs."
