  • Notes
    • Also Duke of Naples, after he blinded and deposed his brother Sergio II in 878. In this usurpation he was initially supported by Pope John VIII, who wished to break the Neapolitan friendship with the Muslim world. However, in 879, John excommunicated Atanasio for not having yet broken with the Saracens. This excommunication was lifted before 886, but Atanasio continued to play complex diplomatic and military games with Saracen and Byzantine power. A hellenophile, he is credited with having preserved many Greek manuscripts.
