  • Notes
    • George Walter Chamberlain's History of Weymouth, Massachusetts (Weymouth, MA: Weymouth Historical Society, 1923), cited here for Deborah Whitmarsh's birth date, gives her different parents. On page 615, volume 4, in the entry for her husband Nicholas Shaw, she is shown as the daughter of Nicholas and Hannah [Reed, though he doesn't give her maiden name] Whitmarsh, with a birth date of 3 Aug 1759. But on page 759 of the same volume, the entry for Nicholas's brother John lists, as one of his daughters, "Deborah, b. 1665; m. Nicholas Shaw."

Other sources go back and forth on this question as well; several of them are discussed in this well-considered note by J. Richardson on werelate.org. Ultimately Richardson makes a convincing onomastic argument that her parents were John Whitmarsh and Sarah Harding, which is what we show here.

According to G. H. Hayward's Shaws of New Brunswick and Maine with roots in Massachusetts and England, 1518-2004, she outlived her husband, but her death date is unknown.
