  • Notes
    • Arrived in 1633, first at Roxbury, then Boston by 1637, where he was a supporter of the Rev. Wheelwright, occasioning his departure to Portsmouth in 1638. He was clearly a well-educated man, judging from the sorts of offices he held in Rhode Island until his move to Pettaquamscutt in or after 1665. This final move roughly coincided with his desertion or abandonment of his first wife, Margaret (_____) Odding, the mother of Hannah, his only child. On 3 May 1665 Margaret petitioned the Rhode Island court for relief, upon which the court ordered that his estate be impounded. Porter made provision for his wife, and the impoundment was rescinded. His connection to Herodias Long, who had previously been divorced from or deserted by both John Hicks and George Gardiner (see her entry) appears to have commenced after 1665 and before 1671. It is unlikely that they ever legally married.
