  • Notes
    • It is remarkably difficult to ascertain the death date of Jane Winthrop. The crowdsourced genealogy sites are infested with the idea that she died on 5 Jan 1612, which is fact the date of her marriage to Thomas Gostlin[g]. She was definitely alive on 4 Mar 1631 when John Winthrop, Jr., in a letter to his wife Martha, commended her to convey his love to "vncle and aunt Gostlin." The widely-referenced Evidences of the Winthrops of Groton (citation details below) appears to have been printed with a typographic error showing her death date as 16 May 1616. All the copies we can find online have been hand-corrected, but in most cases, the correction is itself illegible; it is impossible to tell whether it should read 1656 or 1666. Finally, the copy at Harvard, one of the four copies offered on Hathitrust, is corrected in a fashion that unambiguously reads 1656.
