Notes - His given name appears in the record as Macute, Macuth, Macaeth, Micaieth, and Micareth. As Frederick J. Nicholson established in 1990 (citation details below), his name was never "Matthew." And as Mary Ann Long Skinner pointed out in 1993 ("The Given Name Macuth," The American Genealogist 68:31), the given name Macute clearly refers to the Welsh St. Machute (also St. Malo), observances of whom were still popular in sixteenth-century England and who was still on the Anglican calendar.
