  • Notes
    • "Ellen is named with her two husbands in the Gilby pedigree in the 1562 visitation of Lincolnshire, signed by her brother George (Walter C. Metcalfe, ed., The Visitation of the County of Lincoln in 1562-4 [London, 1881], 51). In a Brough pedigree in the same visitation (p. 21), it is stated that John Gilby's wife, Agnes Brough (Ellen's mother), was a daughter of Robert Brough and Mary Newcomen. Several lawsuits, however, show that Brough and Newcomen made a marriage settlement in 1523, far too late for them to be grandparents of Ellen Gilby, who was married to William Femers by 1542."
