  He was of Roxbury, where he was made freeman on 18 May 1642. He was a member of the Rev. John Eliot's church. He has been claimed as a son of William Lewes and Elinor Taylor of Stoke-by-Nayland, Suffolk, but there are multiple problems with this, which are well-covered on his Wikitree page.
