Notes - A Samson Penley married, at Plymstock, Devon on 29 Oct 1639, a woman called "Margaret" Standon by the Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire (citation details below). Her name is transcribed as "Rachaell Standon" on familysearch.org, and to our unskilled eye, both readings are equally plausible and implausible. The original register is here, and we would welcome a more experienced paleographer's view.
The GDMN does not state that this couple were definitely the parents of Sampson Penley of early Maine, although John C. Brandon's 1998 article (citation details below) collects evidence that the latter Sampson Penley was from the vicinity of Plymouth, Devon, of which Plymstock is a suburb.
