- "The noted genealogist, Elizabeth French Bartlett, around 1900 extracted Aldous entries from original records in Suffolk, England, and her notes are deposited at the Society. Listed under the parish of Stradbroke is the following: 'James Aldous m. Elizabeth Barber 15 Nov. 1592.' The present author has been unable to locate any record of this marriage in the Stradbroke parish registers, either in the originals or in a transcript made years ago, both of which are now on deposit at the County Record Office. Where did that marriage take place? All efforts to find it have eluded searches. Coming at the clue from another angle, extensive Barber searches have been made to find other evidence of a connection to the Barber family. This too has failed. An Elizabeth Barber was baptized at Stradbroke 9 April 1570, daughter of Giles Barber, but the marriage of an Elizabeth Barber was recorded there in 1596. At this point I regret being required by the evidence to say that James's wife Elizabeth is unidentified." [Myrtle Stevens Hyde, citation details below]
