    • He was a shoemaker. Despite many claims made as to his origins, they are in fact unknown.

      "He arrived in Newbury in 1637, and established himself at Bartlett's Cove. He brought with him an old 'Breeches Bible' which was still extant around 1937. [...] He was literate and taught his own children." [Ancestral Lines from Maine to Virginia, citation details below.]

      "Conflicting stories place Richard Bartlett in Newbury, Mass., as early as 1635 or 1637. Eldest son John Bartlett was a freeman in May 1637, but Richard is not found in records until 1640/1. Claims by earlier writers that Richard Bartlett in 1639 petitioned the general court and was granted twenty pounds were incorrectly based on a misreading of the name 'Richard Brackett.'"
