    Notes:

From The Hazen Family in America (citation details below):

Nothing has been learned of his marriage or death.

The name of Samuel Hazen is the first of the family to have been found in New Jersey records. In an old volume at Newton appears this record: "At a court of General Sessions of the Peace held at Hardwick, County of Sussex, on the Third Tuesday in February in the year of our Lord one Thousand seven hundred and fifty five and in the Twenty eighth year of his Majesty's Reign--The King vs. Charles McConnell--Indictment for misdemeanor. The attorney general opened the cause and the following Evidences pro Rege--Mary Robins, Jane Robins, Joshua Robins, Saml. Hazen, Thomas Wolverton."

Soon after this date, the names of Thomas and Daniel Hazen appear in the same book of court records, and in 1778 the name of Nathaniel Hazen [son of John]. This corroborates the general tradition among their descendants that three or four brothers came from Connecticut to New Jersey at about the same time. The only known child of Samuel is his son Samuel.

From The Hazen Family in America (citation details below):

There is no doubt that he is the Samuel Hazen of Woodbury who sold a dwelling house standing a little west of the Eight-mile Brook, 16 Nov. 1781, but there is no evidence as to how long he had been in Woodbury. He bought six acres at Kettletown, Southbury Parish, in 1787, and sold it 31 May 1790. The census of 1790 gives in the family of Samuel Hazen of Southbury, separated from Woodbury in 1787, four boys under sixteen and three females, one doubtless his wife.

There is a tradition that he was a soldier under Washington in the Revolution, that he spelled his name with two z's, and that he was too lazy to write the two z's and only used one commonly.

He moved from Connecticut to Sussex County, New Jersey, it is said, when his son Ithamar was twelve years old or about 1794.

He was a noted American portrait painter. Although none of the sources below mention it, it would appear that he and his second wife Deliverance were Swedenborgians.

From Wikipedia (accessed 5 July 2022):

Waldo was born on April 6, 1783 in Windham, Connecticut, the son of Esther (née Stevens) and Zacheus Waldo. At the age of sixteen, he moved to Hartford to begin his formal art training under the tutelage of Joseph Steward, a prominent local artist.

Four years later, he set up shop as a portraitist in Hartford, later relocating to Litchfield, Connecticut. While in Hartford, he had made the acquaintance of congressman John Rutledge, Jr., who was impressed with his work and, in 1803, invited him to come to Charleston, South Carolina. From 1803 to 1805, Waldo earned a sizable income from his commissions and decided that he would use the money to study art in London. He studied under Benjamin West in London.

He arrived in London in 1806 with letters of introduction to Benjamin West and John Singleton Copley. While studying with them, he also studied drawing at the Royal Academy and exhibited a portrait there in 1808.

Between his artistic activities, he met and married Elizabeth Wood of Liverpool in 1808. Together they had five children that survived infancy. Elizabeth died in 1825 and the following year, on 9 May 1826, he married Deliverance Mapes and had seven more children.

In 1809, he returned to the United States and established a portrait studio in New York City.

Three years later William Jewett (d. 24 March 1874), a young coach painter from New London, Connecticut who wanted to be a fine artist, approached Waldo and asked to be taken in as an apprentice. Waldo agreed and allowed him to live with his family during his time of study. In 1818, they entered into a formal partnership which lasted until 1854, when Jewett retired. As a team, it is generally believed that Waldo painted the head and hands of their subjects, while Jewett filled in the clothing and draperies.

In addition to his painting, Waldo served as a director of the American Academy of the Fine Arts from 1817 until its dissolution in 1841. He was also a founding member of the National Academy of Design.

From the web page of the Worcester Art Museum:

Waldo's studio was popular in the second quarter of the nineteenth century, and he painted many merchants, public officials, and fellow artists. His prominent sitters include General Andrew Jackson (1817, three versions, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, Mass., and Historic New Orleans). Although he is known as a portraitist, Waldo also experimented with landscape, as he indicated in an 1819 letter to fellow painter Thomas Sully: "I have just returned from an excursion up the North River where Jewett and I have been making sketches and painting Landscapes for five weeks past."

Waldo was active in the most prestigious fine arts institutions of his day. In 1817, he was elected one of the directors of the American Academy of Fine Arts in New York. He continued in that office until the Academy was dissolved in 1840. He also exhibited portraits and copies after Old Master paintings at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. In 1826 he was among the founding members of the National Academy of Design, the New York institution that replaced the former American Academy in function and prestige. In 1846, Waldo became an associate member of the National Academy. Waldo died in 1861 and National Academy president Daniel Huntington organized a small memorial exhibition in his honor.

According letter from John Dyer-Bennet to his sister Miriam, 3 Dec 1975, “Grinnell” (whether this means the college’s administration or its alumni association is unclear) was able to confirm that Charles W. Clapp “was professor of rhetoric in 1870-71,” and that he was “summarily fired by the president of the college on commencement day” in 1871. “It isn’t known for certain why, but in a speech on the history of Grinnell given some years later the president said Prof. Clapp ‘hardly agreed with the college on the joint education of men and women.’”

The president of the college would have been George Frederic Magoun, who (according to Grinnell’s web site) served in that capacity from 1865 to 1884. Also according to the site, in 1865 Joanna Harris Haines was the first woman to graduate from Grinnell, so presumably what Magoun was saying was that the Rev. Charles Wells Clapp was opposed to “the joint education of men and women.”

Charles married Jane Pray Bassett on 16 Aug 1849. Jane (daughter of John Bassett and Nancy Atwater Lee) was born on 21 Nov 1822 in Derby, New Haven, Connecticut; died in 1924; was buried in Godfrey Cemetery, Godfrey, Madison, Illinois. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  1. 86.  William Eben Stone Descendancy chart to this point (72.Elizabeth9, 59.John8, 46.Benjamin7, 33.Stephen6, 22.Elizabeth5, 10.Sarah4, 4.William3, 2.William2, 1.Susan1) was born on 27 Nov 1845 in Walpole, Norfolk, Massachusetts; died on 23 Feb 1921 in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts.

    Notes:

He appears in several sources as "William Ebenezer Stone," and while it's possible that this was how he was christened, it's obvious from the record of his doings as an adult that he went by "William Eben Stone."

From the The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, April 1922, page 83: "William Eben Stone, Ph.B.", by J. Gardner Bartlett:

WILLIAM EBEN STONE, of Cambridge, Mass., elected to resident membership in the New England Historic Genealogical Society 5 May 1880, died at his home in Cambridge 23 February 1921.

He was born at Walpole, Mass., 27 November 1845, the youngest son of Dr. Ebenezer7 and Elizabeth Holbrook (Hawes) Stone, the father being a graduate of Brown University and the Harvard Medical School and for over forty years a successful physician in Walpole and the surrounding towns. The progenitor of the family in America was Dea. Gregory1 Stone of Cambridge, Mass., in 1637, from whom Mr. Stone was descended through John2 of Sudbury, Mass., Nathaniel3 and Ebenezer4 of Framingham, Mass., Silas5 of Natick, Mass., and Dublin, N. H., who died near Saratoga while serving in the American Army in the Revolution, Silas6 of Sherborn, Mass., who also was a soldier in the American Army in the Revolution and was severely wounded at the Battle of White Plains, N. Y., and Dr. Ebenezer7 Stone of Walpole, Mass., his father. In all of his ancestral lines Mr. Stone traced his descent from the early Puritan founders of New England, including among his ancestors the Waites, Hills, Pratts, Russells, Coolidges, Twitchells, Bullards, Barbours, Haweses, and many other well-known families of Middlesex and Norfolk Counties, Mass.

Mr. Stone was graduated at Brown University in 1866 with the degree of Bachelor of Philosophy, and then studied mining engineering for a year as a member of the first class ever graduated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1867 he went to Marquette, Mich., where he remained seven years as a chemist and engineer in the employ of various iron mining companies. In 1874 he secured an interest in the Champion Iron Company of Michigan, soon afterwards became treasurer and general manager of this company, with offices in Boston, and continued in these positions for twenty-five years. The mines of this iron company were rich in a scarce high-grade ore which was essential in the manufacture of steel by the earlier methods of the open-hearth process, so that the operations of the company, under the efficient, skillful direction of Mr. Stone, became extremely profitable. During all these years Mr. Stone's home was in Cambridge and his office in Boston; but four times each year he spent a few weeks at the mines in Michigan, supervising their management. About 1901 the company was very advantageously sold to Pennsylvania steel interests merged in the United States Steel Corporation, and Mr. Stone retired from active business with an ample fortune.

From his early years Mr. Stone was enthusiastically interested in the genealogy of the Stone family and the history of his ancestors, and by his persistent efforts from 1880 to 1896, through researches by Col. Joseph Lemuel Chester, Henry FitzGilbert Waters, and himself, he succeeded in locating Gregory Stone at Great Bromley, co. Essex, England, and in tracing back his ancestry there for several generations. These results were reported by Mr. Stone at the first meeting of the Stone Family Association, held in Boston 26 January 1897. Of this organization Mr. Stone was the predominant but unostentatious leader during the rest of his life, serving as its vice president, 1897-1904, its president, 1904-1909, and a member of its executive committee, 1909-1921. The activities of this association culminated in the appearance in 1918 of the Gregory Stone Genealogy, an important work of nine hundred pages, the compilation and publication of which were almost wholly due to the enthusiastic efforts and extreme liberality of Mr. Stone.

In 1907 Mr. Stone was appointed a member of the Committee on English Research of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, and he served on this committee the remaining fourteen years of his life. During all this time he was not only a generous annual contributor to the funds raised by the committee for carrying on genealogical research in England, but, was also always warmly appreciative of the results secured and published in the Register. After holding membership in the Society for forty years, he was elected, at the annual meeting in February 1920, a councillor for a three-year term, only one year of which he had served at the time of his decease. During his later life he was a frequent visitor to the library of the Society and to the Boston Athenaeum, for the purpose of pursuing his favorite genealogical researches.

In 1874 Mr. Stone established his home in Cambridge, where he resided the rest of his life, and in later years he also had a summer house on Fisher's Island, in Long Island Sound. He travelled extensively in North and South America, and several times made extended trips to Europe, where the family lived at one time for three years while his children were being educated there.

He was a member of the Somerset Club of Boston, the Oakley Country Club, the New England Kennel Club, and the Cambridge Boat Club. He also held membership in the Cambridge Historical Society, the Boston Athenaeum, the Bostonian Society, the Bibliophile Society of Boston, the Society of Colonial Wars in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and the Society of Sons of the Revolution.

The finest qualities of our ancient New England stock came to their fairest fruition in the character and personality of Mr. Stone. His innate refinement, cultured mind, and delicate modesty were always apparent; his courteous, genial, engaging manner and frank, sincere cordiality ever gladdened the circles in which he moved; his gentle, serene disposition, sympathetic kindness, warmth of heart, and liberal generosity endeared him to all his relatives and friends; and his unswerving integrity, sound judgment, and intellectual abilities secured for him the respect and esteem of the community. Favored with a tall figure, fine physique, and handsome countenance, he had a distinguished bearing and appearance. Remarkably fine health and unimpaired keenness of mind enabled him to enjoy life with full zest to advanced age, until finally stricken with illness a few months before his decease in his seventy-sixth year.

He married at Cambridge, 22 June 1871, Katherine M. Fay, daughter of Rev. Dr. Charles and Charlotte E. (Hopkins) Fay. She survives him, together with their three daughters, Mrs. Arthur Loring Jackson (Pauline Fay Stone) of Cambridge, Mrs. Austin Tappan Wright (Margaret Garrad Stone) of Berkeley, Calif., and Amy Fay Stone of New York City. Their only son, Reginald Stone, died in 1892, in his fifteenth year.

    From Britannica.com (accessed 16 Sep 2020):

Lucy Myers Wright Mitchell, née Lucy Myers Wright…archaeologist who, though self-taught, became an internationally recognized authority on ancient Greek and Roman sculpture.

Lucy Wright was the daughter of a missionary to the Nestorian Christians in Persia. In 1860 she was taken to the United States, and a short time later she entered Mount Holyoke Female Seminary (now Mount Holyoke College), South Hadley, Massachusetts, leaving in 1864 to rejoin her father in Persia. On his death the next year she returned to the United States. She married Samuel S. Mitchell in 1867, and they traveled together as missionaries to Syria. Her husband’s health failed soon afterward, however, and they left Syria; the rest of Lucy Mitchell’s life was spent mainly in Europe. By that time she had acquired a vernacular knowledge of Syriac and Arabic, as well as French, German, and Italian, and for a time she devoted herself to philological studies. Her dictionary of modern Syriac was never published, and the manuscript was ultimately obtained by the University of Cambridge.

In 1873 Mitchell turned her attention to ancient art. While living in Rome (1876–78) she gave parlour lectures on Greek and Roman sculpture. A number of museums and libraries granted her scholar’s privileges, and many leading archaeologists of Europe assisted her in her studies. In 1883 she published A History of Ancient Sculpture and a companion volume of plates, Selections from Ancient Sculpture. These works were well received by critics and fellow scholars, and in 1884 she became only the second woman to be elected to the Imperial German Archaeological Institute. From 1884 to 1886 she studied in Berlin for a major work on Greek pottery and vase painting. Mitchell fell ill, however, and died before completing her studies.

Lucy married Samuel S. Mitchell in 1867. Samuel was born in of Morristown, Morris, New Jersey. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

He was born in New York City, as stated in both Continuation of Waldo Genealogy and the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (citation details below), but neither source mentions specifically that he was born on Staten Island. That borough appears occasionally in his fiction, notably the story "Shottle Bop."

Continuation of Waldo Genealogy (citation details below) calls him "Theodore Hamilton Sturgeon", but he was born Edward Hamilton Waldo. His name was legally changed to Edward Hamilton Sturgeon at age 11, after his mother's divorce and 1929 remarriage to William Dicky "Argyll" Sturgeon, an event unmentioned in Continuation of Waldo Genealogy. [Source: Adoption record of Edward H. Waldo, now renamed Edward H. Sturgeon, reproduced in the 2013 Open Road Integrated Media e-book edition of Sturgeon's More Than Human.]

Sturgeon wrote years later about how his first name subsequently changed from Edward to Theodore: "I was confirmed a year [after the adoption proceedings] as Theodore rather than Edward because my mother told me I didn't like to chance being called Eddy. Hindsight again: I was my father's namesake (he was always Ned, never Ted) and she wanted the crumbs swept out. (Years later when I was having therapy with Milton Kline he asked me with shocking abruptness, 'What ever happened to Edward Waldo?' It was weird. My guts contracted.) Anyway, as far as self-indentification is concerned, I was always Ted or Teddy or, to my mother, Thuddy, no matter what the legal handles were." This is from the posthumously-published chapbook Argyll: A Memoir (Pullman, Washington: The Sturgeon Project, 1993), which consists of a pair of essays in which Sturgeon grapples with his fraught relationship with his stepfather, who by modern standards was obviously a classic abuser.

Seventh cousin twice removed to Robert A. Heinlein, via John Hutchins (1604-1685) and his wife Frances (d. 1694).

Eighth cousin once removed to Fritz Leiber, via William Allen (1615-1686) and Ann Goodale (1618-1678).

And a third cousin once removed to Narisa Chakranbongse's son Hugo Chakrabongse Levy (1981- ), Thai-American actor, singer, rapper, and songwriter, who performs under the stage names "Hugo" and "Chulachak Chakranbongse."

Finally, through their common ancestors Andrew Hunter Dunn, 5th Anglican Bishop of Quebec, and his wife Alice Hunter, Theodore Sturgeon was a first cousin once removed to Joan Hunter Dunn, the inspiration for John Betjeman's much-anthologized 1941 poem "A Subaltern's Love-song."

    Notes:

    From Britannica.com (accessed 11 Sep 2020):

Richard Dyer-Bennet, (born October 6, 1913, Leicester, Leicestershire, England—died December 14, 1991, Monterey, Massachusetts, U.S.), British-born American tenor and guitarist who helped to revive the popularity of folk music through his concert performances, recordings, compositions, and teaching.

Though born in England, Dyer-Bennet grew up in Canada and California and attended the University of California at Berkeley (1932–35), where he studied English and music. (He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1935.) After visiting Swedish folklorist Sven Scholander in 1935, Dyer-Bennet adopted Scholander’s trinity of song interpretation—poetry, melody, and lute accompaniment. In 1944, though, he switched to the Spanish guitar and gave the first of what would become annual solo concerts at New York City’s Town Hall; the impresario Sol Hurok signed him for national and foreign tours for many years. He gained a cult following with his approximately 800 songs (including about 100 of his own composition) that ranged through British and French ballads, European medieval songs, Swedish shepherd tunes, and American cowboy songs. Curiously, though identified as a folk singer, he preferred the label minstrel or troubadour.

Dyer-Bennet stopped giving concerts after a stroke in 1972 limited use of his left hand. From 1970 to 1983 he taught at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
