    Notes:

Or Bruges. MP for Ludgershall, Wiltshire in 1529, and probably in 1523 and 1536. Gentleman usher to Henry VIII. Sheriff of Oxfordshire and Berkshire, 1520-22, 1530-31.

    From the History of Parliament:

As a younger son, Henry Brydges appears to have had to make his own way in the world. The general pardon which he received on 15 May 1509 throws some light on his early life: styling him esquire or merchant, it describes him as of Newbury in Berkshire, Faulstone, Ludgershall and Salisbury in Wiltshire, Poole in Dorset, and finally London. Such locations make it all but certain that he dealt in cloth: Newbury in particular was an important centre in the manufacture of kerseys. Here Brydges had as a contemporary the famous clothier whose son and namesake John Winchcombe alias Smallwood, was to witness Brydges’ will in 1538. Like the clothier, Brydges appears to have furthered his fortunes by marrying a local widow, for Margery Bedford was doubtless the relict of one or other of two Newbury residents, John and Richard Bedford, whose wills were proved in 1494, and of whom at least one was a ‘clothmaker’. John Bedford of Poole, who in 1509 bequeathed £10 apiece to his mother Margery Bedford and to Henry Brydges, was probably Brydges’ stepson. [...]

Between 1533 and 1538 Sir William Gifford, whose son John had married Brydges’ daughter Joan, brought a suit against Brydges in Chancery; Gifford had lost his copy of the indentures containing the marriage settlement and Brydges refused to let him see his copy. Brydges’ will of 5 Dec. 1538 was proved on the following 28 Jan. His son Richard was residuary legatee and executor.

Henry married Margery about 1500. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate birth: of The Wenyerde, Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England

    Notes:

Burgess for Cricklade, Worcestershire, 1529. Knight of the shire for Gloucestershire, Nov 1554.

From his article at the History of Parliament online: "It is not certain to which kinsman Rede owed his election to the Parliament of 1529, to his stepfather Thomas, de jure 5th Lord Berkeley, who was to mention both Rede and his wife in his will, or to Sir John Brydges, one of Berkeley’s associates whose service Rede may already have entered." The History of Parliament is in error. Thomas Berkeley, de jure Lord Berkeley, was not William Rede's stepfather, but rather stepfather to Katherine Rowdon, William Rede's wife. See Complete Peerage, volume 2, page 137.

From various sources including RA it also appears that HoP is incorrect in identifying this William Reade's mother as his father's first wife, Margaret Beauchamp.

One of JTSs eleven proven "gateway ancestors."

Citizen and grocer of London. He came to New England in 1665 with power-of-attorney of his mother-in-law, to collect on a debt owed her by her brother Ephraim Child, who had died in New England in 1662. He was disappointed in this mission, finding nothing to his uncle's estate but further debt. According to a written-out memoir left by William Goddard's son Edward (b. 1675 in Watertown), "his contracted circumstances and the plague then raging in London...was probably the occasion of his continuing to tarry here and sending for his wife and children who came over in 1666."

    CEO of Macmillan Publishers.

His philanthropic activities include longtime service on the board of directors of Graham Windham, more recently called simply Graham, a nonprofit foster care agency providing services to needy children and families in the New York metropolitan area. Founded in 1806, Graham, the oldest non-sectarian childcare agency in the United States, was originally the Orphan Asylum Society of the City of New York, co-founded by Eliza Hamilton after her husband Alexander Hamilton, himself an orphan, was killed in the famous duel with Aaron Burr — a grandson of John Sargent's 6X-grandfather the Rev. Jonathan Edwards. Thus Aaron Burr's first cousin six times removed has served for years on the board of Eliza Hamilton's orphanage.

He is also the author, under the anagrammatic pen name "S. T. Garne," of two children's books, One White Sail: A Caribbean Counting Book (1992) and By a Blazing Blue Sea (1999).

John married Constance Lane Murray on 21 Sep 1985. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
