In the funeral of Henry VII in 1509, [Robert Marbury] was a yeoman to the King's Grandame (that is, Henry VII's grandmother, Lady Margaret Beaufort, wife successively of Edmund Tudor, Earl of Richmond; Sir Henry Stafford; and Thomas Stanley, 1st Earl of Derby). In 1510, as yeoman usher of the Queen's Chamber, he had a grant to be feodary [i.e., one who holds land of an overlord on condition of homage] of the duchy of Exeter within county Devon, during [the king's] pleasure. In 1513, as Robert Marbury Jr. he was a feofee, along with Robert Marbury Sr. [his uncle], John Lenton [father of his son's future wife] and John Marbury, clerk. In 1514, his cousin William Blount, Lord Mountjoy, was the Queen's Chamberlain. In the same year, Robert Marbury, yeoman usher of the Queen's Chamber, was feodary noted above, for life. In the Lincolnshire Rebellion of October 1536, Robert Marbury appears as follows: In the examination of Sir Edward Madeson before the King's Council, Madeson, with his brother John Madeson and both his sons, then went up into Castrefeld to see the number of rebellious and there met Sir Wm. Richard Weston, 1st Earl of Portland, K. G., was Chancellor of the Exchequer and later Lord Treasurer of England under James I and Charles I, being one of the most influential figures in the early years of Charles I's Personal Rule and the architect of many of the policies that enabled him to rule without raising taxes through Parliament.

Weston was the eldest son and heir of Sir Jerome Weston, High Sheriff of Essex for 1599, and the former Mary Cave. He was born at Roxwell, Essex, and was a student of the Middle Temple. He served as Member of Parliament (MP) for a number of constituencies including Maldon (1601–1603), Midhurst (in the parliament of 1604-1611), Essex (in the Addled Parliament of 1614), Arundel (1622), Bossiney (1624), Callington (1625) and Bodmin (1626). He was knighted in 1603.

During the reign of King James I of England, Weston was sent on embassies to Bohemia, Brussels, and Spain. On the last assignment, he negotiated for the restitution of the Palatine. Upon his return to England in 1621, he was made Chancellor of the Exchequer, and retained the post after the accession of Charles I; he proved a capable financial manager but incurred popular hatred as a (justly) suspected Roman Catholic, while also later earning the enmity of the (Catholic) queen, Henrietta Maria for refusing grants to her favourites. He opposed wars with Spain in 1623 and France in 1626, but managed to find ways of raising the money to fund them when required, even when it was impossible to secure the co-operation of Parliament.

Weston was elevated to the peerage on 13 April 1628, as Baron Weston, of Neyland. He was subsequently made Lord Treasurer of England and invested with the Order of the Garter. His policies proving highly unpopular, he escaped impeachment in 1629 only by the dissolution of Parliament. Nevertheless, he played an important role in the King's Personal Rule without Parliament, finding new sources of revenue while preventing any further increase in the King's expenditure, and being for a time the most influential of Charles's advisers. He persuaded the King to make peace with France in 1629 and Spain in 1630, removing the biggest drain on the treasury, and to sign the secret treaty with Spain in 1634. By the time he died in 1635, the Crown was solvent.

On 17 February 1633, Weston was created Earl of Portland. Lord Portland was married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Pincheon of Writtle in Essex. His second wife was Frances Walgrave of Boreley in Essex. He had three children by his first marriage, including Lady Mary Weston (2 January 1603-after August 1678), who married the 2nd Lord Aston of Forfar in 1629, and Lady Elizabeth Weston, who married John Netterville, 2nd Viscount Netterville. He had seven children by his second marriage, including his son Thomas, who later succeeded as 4th Earl, and Lady Anne Weston, the first of the four wives of Basil Feilding, 2nd Earl of Denbigh. His nephew (his sister's son), Jeremy Clarke, became a Governor of Rhode Island in the American colonies.

He arrived in New England sometime in the 1630s. He is one of TNH's four "gateway ancestors," albeit one about whom the scholarly consensus has been very much in flux. That the William Wentworth of New England was the man baptized in Alford seems almost certain. That the man baptized in Alford had many gentry and aristocratic ancestors seems indisputable. That he had a provable "royal ancestry" was long at issue, but several recent articles in The American Genealogist would appear to have finally sorted matters:

Cumulatively, these articles establish that the immigrant Wentworth's extensive medieval ancestry includes such crowned heads as King John of England; Alfonso IX of León and Galicia; Jeane de Briene, the Crusader "king" of Jerusalem; and (despite previous descents having been disproved) William "The Lion" of Scotland.

"William Wentworth (1616-1697) was a follower of John Wheelwright, and an early settler of New Hampshire. Coming from Alford in Lincolnshire, he likely came to New England with Wheelwright in 1636, but no records are found of him in Boston. When Wheelwright was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for his role in the Antinomian Controversy, he established the settlement of Exeter, New Hampshire, and Wentworth followed him there and then to Wells, Maine. After Wheelwright left Wells for Hampton, New Hampshire, Wentworth went to Dover, New Hampshire, and this is where he lived the remainder of his life. He was the proprietor of a sawmill, and held several town offices, but is most noted for being an elder in his Dover church for nearly 40 years. He was a signer of the Exeter Combination.

His near descendants included his grandson John Wentworth, Lieutenant Governor of New Hampshire 1717-1730, and New Hampshire governors Benning Wentworth (governor 1741-1767) and Sir John Wentworth (governor 1767-1775); also John Wentworth, Speaker of the New Hampshire House 1771-1778.

Jeremy Clarke (also known as Jeremiah Clarke) was an early colonial settler and President of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. In other words, it's Andrew Lee Allen, Jr. (1832-1918). Sometimes we wonder if people are doing genealogy in their sleep.

"Andrew Lee Allen was born in Limerick, York Co., Maine November 24th 1791. He was the son of Elijah Allen, who was born in 1763 at Stratham, Rockingham Co., New Hampshire, and his first wife, Mehitable Hall, who was christened March 26th, 1769 at Rochester, Strafford Co., New Hampshire.

"His mother died June 25th, 1800 in Corinth, Orange Co., Vermont and his father was remarried October 21st, 1809 to Hannah, widow of George Perry. His father died October 19th, 1839 at Limerick, York Co., Maine.

"After his mother's death Andrew Lee Allen went to live with his maternal grandfather, Rev. Avery Hall, staying until he was 14 years of age. He worked at the blacksmith trade. Not being satisfied, he left home and never went back again. He went on shipboard to help protect the American vessels during the war known as the War of 1812. He left there and went into Canada, where he got into trouble with the British by drinking a toast at a barn-raising. The toast was, 'he wished that the Eagle of America would triumph over the crown of Great Britain,' for which he was arrested by the British. Making his escape he went into the state of New York, Cattaraugus Co., where he entered one hundred and sixty acres of land, and made himself a very nice home. He planned to settle down for life and he soon owned a large grove of sugar maple trees besides his prosperous farm.

"On December 11th, 1824, he married Clarinda Knapp, daughter of Calvin and Deborah (Hopkins) Knapp. Clarinda was a refined, educated woman who was highly skilled in the arts of fine painting, sewing, tailoring, ladies' leghorn hat designing, and homemaking. Her gentle upbringing had a great influence on the lives of those about her. She was a woman of true faith and was a Bible scholar.

"They remained in Burton, Cattaraugus Co., New York until they had seven children, namely: Elijah, Lydia, Saphronia, Charles, Andrew, James, and Sidney. They had not joined any religious society but were honest and upright with all men, waiting for something to come along that would give them better satisfaction than the religions of the day. [...]"

A pioneer of evidence-based genealogical research, he spent the last two decades of his life in England researching the English ancestry of various American families. In 1869 he was one of the founders of the Harleian Society. In 1877, Columbia University granted him an honorary LL.D in recognition of his genealogical work. Oxford University followed with another honorary degree in 1881. His literary executor was George Edward Cokayne, Norroy King of Arms, founder of the Complete Peerage.

His connection to the maintainers of this database is that, under the sponsorship of Chicago mayor and sometime congressman John Wentworth,* he performed the primary research establishing with reasonable certainty the medieval ancestry of the New England immigrant William Wentworth (1616-1697), one of TNH's "gateway ancestors."

His other connection, mostly demonstrating that all of human history is a gigantic tangled knot, is that his first published literary work was a volume of poetry entitled Greenwood Cemetery and Other Poems (1843), the title poem of which is absolutely about Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York, whose bounds stand half a block from where this database's maintainers lived from 2004 to 2018.

"John Seymour spent his first eleven years in Cove before his family moved to Mesa, Arizona. He has been extremely active in missionary work and colonization. He has made his livelihood by farming and canal building. His first mission was in the Southern States; the second in the Eastern States; and the third in the Southwest Indian Mission among the Pimas. He and his wife have financed twenty-one years of missionary work and have contributed funds for temple work. No request from the church was refused whether great or small. He has been a faithful ward teacher for fifty years without missing one month. While supporting one missionary he prospered greatly and was so encouraged that he supported two more after the first had returned. His financial status reversed and he became almost bankrupt, barely able to keep the missionaries out. Later he was asked why he had not become discouraged in the Gospel because of this situation and he replied, 'Whether I get rich or go broke while I keep a missionary out doesn't change the fact that the Gospel is true.'

"His wife, Barbara Phelps, came to Mesa from Montpelier, Idaho when she was a year old. They suffered the rigors of pioneer life including a smallpox epidemic. Their marriage has been humble and devout. Ten of their twelve children grew to maturity and are active in the Church. She milked cows to support herself and family and to supply her husband while he was on two missions. She joined her husband on his third mission and they did a splendid job among the Indians at Santon, Arizona.
