Although no marriage for Simon's parents has been found, it is probable that Thomas Stacy married Sarah Wood, daughter of Henry and Joan (___) Wood, presumably the Sara Wood, parents unnamed, baptized at Epping 29 January 1562/3. As their first recorded child, Thomas, was baptized there 27 March 1586, Thomas Stacy and Sarah Wood were married by 1585.

Thomas Wood, husbandman of Roydon, Essex, in his will dated 24 March 1599/1600, named "brethren [in law]" John Archer and Thomas Stace of Epping; Elizabeth Archer, "my brother John Archer's daughter"; and "Henry Wood and John son of my brother Henry deceased." William Stace was a witness. In his will dated 12 February 1594/5, Henry Wood of Tolleshunt Major, yeoman, mentioned "Thomas Wood and Thomas Stace my brothers" and named, among others, mother Joan Wood, late deceased, and brother Christopher Wood.

The will of Sarah's father, "Henrie Woode of Eppinge, yeoman," made 27 September 1574, proved 20 February 1576/7, named wife Jone, sons Henry, John and Thomas, daughters Lucy (under 20 and unmarried), Sara (under 20 and unmarried), Margerie, and Margaret; wife Jone to be executor with sons Henry and John, and son-in-law John Archer to act as overseer. Joan Wood, widow of Epping, in her will dated 25 January 1591, proved May 1592, left a bequest for "the repair of the highway leadin[g] from Eppingbury to Epping Church" and mentioned daughter Margery, the children of daughter Margaret, the children of daughter Sara, the children of daughter Luce, Jane wife of son Thomas, members of the Wignall family, John Googe, Grace Luther, Susan Ingold, Agnes Roper, William Wignall and Agnes Wood his sister. She left to son Henry land in Hatfield Broadoak, and appointed son-in-law Christopher Wood [probably her stepson] executor. Mr. Hidron and John Archer were to be overseers.

“Simon was a ‘relatively wealthy’ clothier who, along with his wife Elizabeth Clark (or Clerke) Stacy, was a member of the thriving East Anglian Puritan community. With the ascendancy of Archbishop William Laud, however, Puritans experienced repression. At about the same time (1629-34), a severe economic depression struck the area's cloth industry. Many Puritans, not only the poorest and most religious, were inspired to emigrate. In other words, in new style, he was born in March 1667.

According to History of the Goodspeed Family (citation details below), he was at Salem 1690, Watertown 1696, Barnstable 1709, Ipswich 1719, and Gloucester 1722. He was a millwright.

He studied medicine under the direction of Dr. John Bulkeley of Colchester. He was evidently also a talented and largely self-taught musician, and over time constructed musicial instruments for his family, including a parlor organ and a dulcimer. The Puritan authorities of Hartford rebuked him more than once for these indulgences, which was probably one of the reasons he and his family eventually removed to Great Barrington and joined the Episcopal church there.

ancestry.com's "King Family Tree" presents several records for Frederick A. C. Gardiner. His 1903 application for a US passport shows his permanent residence as Newton Centre, Massachusetts. Harvard Graduates magazine, volume 22, 1914, reports the marriage of his daughter Elizabeth Manning Gardner to Charles Edward Whitmore "at Newton Centre, May 31, 1913." Probably not quite correct -- two other alumni publications and the 7 Jun 1913 issue of the Cambridge Tribune place the wedding in Boston. But it's perfectly plausible that Harvard Graduates magazine was confused by the fact that Elizabeth Gardner was herself from Newton Centre.

His Maine birth record shown on this ancestry.com page gives his last name as Gardiner, but this record states that it's a copy of the original, "from the Hallowell book of births." Vital Records of Hallowell, Maine, to the year 1892 ed. Edward Johnson (Auburn, Maine: Maine Historical Society, 1924) gives his birth, and that of all his Guptill/Gardiner siblings, under "Gardiner" on pages 111-112. It's definitely the same group of children, offspring of "D. L. and Abby A.", including the distinctively-named sister "Abby Inez". (It also says that his actual birth date was 9 Jan 1848, just as the handwritten copy says. The ancestry.com page, however, says 7 Jan 1848, and this is what Frederick Gardiner himself put on his 1903 passport application.)

Lucy Myers Wright Mitchell, née Lucy Myers Wright…archaeologist who, though self-taught, became an internationally recognized authority on ancient Greek and Roman sculpture.

Lucy Wright was the daughter of a missionary to the Nestorian Christians in Persia. In 1860 she was taken to the United States, and a short time later she entered Mount Holyoke Female Seminary (now Mount Holyoke College), South Hadley, Massachusetts, leaving in 1864 to rejoin her father in Persia. On his death the next year she returned to the United States. She married Samuel S. Mitchell in 1867, and they traveled together as missionaries to Syria. Her husband’s health failed soon afterward, however, and they left Syria; the rest of Lucy Mitchell’s life was spent mainly in Europe. By that time she had acquired a vernacular knowledge of Syriac and Arabic, as well as French, German, and Italian, and for a time she devoted herself to philological studies. Her dictionary of modern Syriac was never published, and the manuscript was ultimately obtained by the University of Cambridge.

In 1873 Mitchell turned her attention to ancient art. While living in Rome (1876–78) she gave parlour lectures on Greek and Roman sculpture. A number of museums and libraries granted her scholar’s privileges, and many leading archaeologists of Europe assisted her in her studies. In 1883 she published A History of Ancient Sculpture and a companion volume of plates, Selections from Ancient Sculpture. These works were well received by critics and fellow scholars, and in 1884 she became only the second woman to be elected to the Imperial German Archaeological Institute. From 1884 to 1886 she studied in Berlin for a major work on Greek pottery and vase painting. Mitchell fell ill, however, and died before completing her studies.

He earned his Bachelors (1873) and Masters (1876) at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire. After junior appointments (first in Ohio and then at Dartmouth) in 1886 he joined Johns Hopkins as a professor of classical philology. In 1887, he became a professor of Greek at Harvard, where, from 1895 to 1908, he was also Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

Some of Wright's most notable works are A History of All Nations from the Earliest Times (1905), a 24–volume history of the world; the translations Masterpieces of Greek Literature (1902); and The Origin of Plato's Cave (1906). He was active in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philological Association, and similar organizations. Sylvia Wright, a freelance writer who frequently and humorously commented in national magazines on trends in modern living, died of cancer Saturday at her home in Cambridge, Mass. She was 64 years old.

Miss Wright was also a former editor of Harpers Bazaar. A collection of her magazine articles, ''Get Away From Me With Those Christmas Gifts,'' was published by McGraw-Hill in 1957. She was also the author of a novel, ''A Shark Infested Rice Pudding.''

After her graduation from Bryn Mawr College, Miss Wright edited and prepared for publication ''Islandia,'' a Utopian novel about an imaginary country written by her father, the late Austin Tappen [sic] Wright, who was a professor of law at the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Pennsylvania. The novel, which has been a steady seller, was published in 1942, reissued in 1958. It is currently published by Arno Press Inc. and the New American Library.

At her death, Miss Wright was writing a biography of her great-aunt, Melusina Fay Peirce, an early feminist and first wife of the American physicist, mathematician and philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce.

Miss Wright is survived by her husband, Paul J. Mitarachi; a son, John; a sister, Phyllis King of Manhattan; and two brothers, Benjamin and William Wright.

His philanthropic activities include longtime service on the board of directors of Graham Windham, more recently called simply Graham, a nonprofit foster care agency providing services to needy children and families in the New York metropolitan area. Founded in 1806, Graham, the oldest non-sectarian childcare agency in the United States, was originally the Orphan Asylum Society of the City of New York, co-founded by Eliza Hamilton after her husband Alexander Hamilton, himself an orphan, was killed in the famous duel with Aaron Burr — a grandson of John Sargent's 6X-grandfather the Rev. Jonathan Edwards. Thus Aaron Burr's first cousin six times removed has served for years on the board of Eliza Hamilton's orphanage.
