    Notes:

    Said by some to have been "of Pontypool, Wales" and by others to have been of Bilston, Staffordshire. He appears to have been involved in the early iron refining industry; he may have lived at both places at one time or another. He was not in any way "one of the last of the 13 children of Sampson Leonard and Margaret Fiennes, Baroness Dacre, of Knol in Kent and Herstmonceux in East Sussex", as asserted on his Find a Grave page; that chestnut was debunked decades ago. There is also no evidence of his birth and death dates, nor any indication that he ever came to New England.

    An internet source cited in Ancestral Lines (citation details below) claims that he was christened at Chevening, Kent on 23 May 1577.

    Notes:

    At Lynn in 1651; of Braintree, 1652, and settled the same year in Taunton. At each of these places he and his brother Henry established forges, the first in Plymouth colony.

    He was survived by a wife, Margaret, who was not the mother of his children.

    On 2 Feb 1733, Hannah (Leonard) Deane, a daughter of James Leonard and the wife of Isaac Deane (d. 1710), wrote down an account of several generations of her family, which she gave to her great-newphew Zephaniah Leonard (Stephen3, James2, James1) (1704-1776). An abstract of Hannah (Leonard) Deane's account was published in the The New England Historical and Genealogical Register in 1853 ("Brief Memoirs", citation details below). Pertinent portions of the abstract are shown below:

    Notes:

    Beginning in 1683 he was for thirty years manager of the Ancient Iron Works of Taunton. He was also deputy from Taunton to the General Court of Plymouth Colony, 1680-86, 1689, 1690; to the General Court of Massachusetts, 1692-96, 1698, 1699; Judge of the Superior Court of Common Pleas of Bristol County, 1692-1713; and captain of the second company of Taunton militia, 1690.

    His birth is recorded in the 1928 printed Vital Records of Taunton, Massachusetts, to the Year 1850, as "Leonard, Thomas, h. Mary Watson, Aug. 3, 1641," which is presumably why many online sites show him as having been born in Taunton. But we have no indication that his parents were in New England that early. And the abbreviation next to his listing in the published vital records reads "P. R. 37", which the volume's frontmatter tells us means that this date was taken from a "private record," which is to say, "the Thomas Leonard Bible as published in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, vol. 32." That article, "Record from the Leonard Family Bible" (NEHGR 32:269, 1878), transcribes the line from the family Bible as merely "Thomas Leonard borne ye 3 of August 1641", with no indication of where he was born.

    A record exists for the baptism of "Thomas the sonne of James Leonard & Jane his wife" at St. Peter's, Kinver, Staffordshire on 8 Aug 1641. This is very plausibly our Thomas Leonard. Kinver was the site of multiple forges and water mills, and It's entirely plausible that Thomas's father James and his uncle Henry, both skilled ironworkers, were there in 1641, a time when royalists were attempting to destroy ironworks that might provide the parliamentarians with arms. Indeed, a book by W. D. John and Anne Simox, Pontypool & Usk Japanned Ware with the Early History of the Iron & Tinplate Industries at Pontypool (published 1953, rev. ed. 1966), quoted in the fourth edition of Ancestral Lines (citation details below), says that James and Henry Leonard left Staffordshire for New England in 1646, which dovetails nicely with the fact that our first firm record of James in New England is at Lynn in 1651.

    As a final piece of circumstantial but striking evidence, Kinver sits just across the River Stour from the small settlement of Whittington, which derived its name from the local Manor of Whittington. (Which, despite many local claims, had nothing to do with Dick Whittington.) In Taunton, James Leonard named his forge on the Mill River...the Whittington Iron Works.

    He likely learned the trade of Ironworker from his father in Braintree, and when in Taunton in 1671 he was given the west hearth of Raynham Forge. In 1695, James and his brother Thomas built the Chartley Iron Works at the corner of South Worcester and West Main streets. Bog iron was dug along the banks of Stony Brook which flowed through the area where Chartley Pond is today. He continued this trade all of his life.

    James was a representative to the general court of Massachusetts, first lieutenant in the first Military Company of Taunton, 1705 and captain in 1713.

    Notes:

    His Find a Grave page states that his wife was named Comfort, but no source for this is given.

    As a young man, he was a master iron workman at his family's Raynham Iron Works in Taunton. Sometime before 1723 he was town treasurer for Taunton, and later, judge of the court of common pleas. UIn 1723 he and his family moved to what is now Morris County, New Jersey, where he established his own ironworks.

    His date and place of death appear to be unknown. His Find a Grave page, and familysearch.org, say he died in 1743 in Hanover, New Jersey, which is now Morristown. His Wikitree page says 1732 in Hanmer, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. None of these provide a source. His burial place is unknown.

    Notes:

    He was raised by his grandfather James Leonard after his father Stephen moved to New Jersey. His grandfather involved young Zephaniah in the family iron-forging business. In 1761 he was made a judge of the Court of Common Pleas. He and his wife died on the same day and were buried in the same grave.

    The gravestone he shares with his wife reads:

    We do not know her exact date or place of birth. The record of her 1924 marriage to John Q. Myers says that she was born in in Howell, Michigan and that she was 19, implying a birth year around 1905. The record of her 1945 marriage to John B. Squier says that she was born in Lansing, Michigan and that she was 39, implying a birth year around 1906. Both marriage records confirm that she was a daughter of Elbert Freeman Allen and Marion Van Wort, and the 1910 and 1920 census records of that couple list a daughter of the appropriate age named Rosalia or Roselia. Elbert Freeman Allen was born in Howell in 1873 and married Marion Van Wort there in 1892. Finally, Rose M. Squier's 9 Apr 1985 obituary in the Battle Creek Enquirer, says that she was born in Lansing and gives her age at death as 79, implying a birth year of 1905. This obituary correctly identifies its subject as the mother of "Barbara Fitzgerald of Dayton" and, while it makes no mention of her first husband, it also correctly says "Her husband, John B. Squier, died in 1963."

    She is a subject of extreme confusion in various user-submitted trees on ancestry.com and listings on Find a Grave. Her second husband was not John McGowen Squires (1903-1972), a son of Albert E. Squires and Ruth May McGowen. Nor was he Walter R. Squires (1892-1973), a son of William Rosecrans Squires and Laura Belle Myers. Walter R. Squires did marry, on 14 Feb 1931 in Mason, Ingham County, Michigan, a woman named Rose M., but she was Miss Rose M. Erbe, 25 years old, born in Mantador, North Dakota, a daughter of Albert Erbe. Walter R. Squires died in Lansing on 9 Feb 1973 and, acccording to his 11 Feb 1973 obituary in the Lansing State Journal, was survived by his wife Rose. Walter and Rose are interred together at Resurrection Cemetery in Wyoming, Kent County, Michigan, under a plaque that gives his birth and death dates as 26 Nov 1892 and 9 Feb 1973, and hers as 20 May 1905 and 11 Mar 2005. She is beyond any possible doubt not the Rosalia M. (Allen) (Myers) Squier who was a daughter of Elbert Freeman Allen and Marion Von Wort and the mother of Barbara Ann (Myers) Fitzgerald.

    Out of the dozens of user-submitted ancestry.com trees in which she appears, several of the less obviously confused give our Rosalia's birth as 8 Oct 1905 in Howell. None of them give a source for this precise date or place, but a birth in October 1905 is exactly consonant with the ages given in both of her marriage records, and with the age (79) given in the Battle Creek Enquirer's report of her death on 4 Apr 1985. Further, her father was born in Howell, her parents were married in Howell, and Howell is the birthplace given on the earlier of her two marriage records, all of which facts suggest that Howell, rather than Lansing, was her actual place of birth. But failing a truly stunning coincidence, she was not born there on 20 May 1905, because we know this to have been the birthdate of Rose M. Erbe, wife of Walter M. Squires.

    Rosalia married John Q. Myers on 12 Dec 1924 in Lansing, Ingham, Michigan, and was divorced on 11 Sep 1944 in Calhoun County, Michigan. John (son of John Walter Myers and Electa Frances Eisenlohr) was born on 6 Feb 1895 in Carson City, Montcalm, Michigan; died on 6 Nov 1965 in Marengo Township, Calhoun, Michigan.
