Emigrated with his wife and children after 29 Apr 1635 on the Elizabeth & Ann.

He was an original proprietor and one of the first settlers of Hartford, Connecticut; his name is on the Founders Monument in downtown Hartford. After arriving in Massachusetts in 1635, the Lord family joined the party of the Rev. Thomas Hooker and about 100 other men, woman, and children, and set out from Newtown to form a new settlement on the Connecticut River.

"They traveled more than a hundred miles, through a hideous and trackless wilderness to Hartford. They had no guide but their compass; and made their way over mountains, through swamps, thickets and rivers, which were passable with great difficulty. They had no cover but the heavens, and no lodgings but such as nature afforded them. They drove with them one hundred and sixty head of cattle and subsisted by the way on the milk of their cows. Mrs. Hooker was borne through the wilderness on a litter. The people generally carried their packs, arms and some utensils. They were nearly a fortnight on their journey. This adventure was the more remarkable as many of this company were persons of figure, who in England had lived in honor, affluence and delicacy, and were strangers to fatigue and danger." His death date is unknown, but has to have been before 29 May 1651, as on that date Dorothy Lord is shown selling land, and at the time in Connecticut a wife could not make contracts while her husband was living. He may have died as early as shortly after 29 Jan 1644, the date of his last appearance in Hartford town records.

1836. William Sisson CHAMPLIN (Mercy SISSON, William, William, Thomas, George, Richard) was born 16 Apr 1794 in Shelburne, Vermont. He died 29 Jan 1861 in Lehi, Utah, Utah.

William Sisson Champlin and his family joined the Mormon Church in the 1830's and migrated to Missouri. He was the son of Joseph Champlin of Westerly, Rhode Island, and Mercy Sisson of Stonington, CT.

The Sissons settled in Independence, Missouri, and were driven out of that area along with the other Mormons. They subsequently located themselves in Clay County Missouri until the Mormons were driven out of there, and then located in Caldwell County, Missouri. Caldwell County was set up at that time by the government, as a county specifically for the Mormons to live in, in order to avoid further conflicts. However, there were some of the old settlers who remained in the county, and they were not happy to have the Mormons as neighbors. You see, Missouri was a slave state, and the Mormons were opposed to slavery. So the aim of the old settlers was to expel the Mormons from the state to ensure the state remained pro-slavery.

William Sisson and his family lived at a place called Haun's Mill. It was a Mormon settlement, but not a very large one. The largest Mormon settlement in Caldwell County was Far West which had about 5,000 residents. The Mormons were aware of the rising hostilities against them, and as a result, the Prophet Joseph Smith counseled those at Haun's Mill to come to Far West for safety. It was October 30th, 1838. William and his family were concerned about having food to last them through the winter at Far West, and so in preparation to go there, they were digging up carrots that day. As they did so, the mob rode in on horseback, and a massacre ensued. A couple of days after the massacre, the Governor of Missouri, Governor Boggs, issued his famous "extermination order" which resulted in the Mormons fleeing to Illinois for safety. The extermination order called for the Mormons to be driven from the state, or exterminated if necessary. (After Joseph Smith was murdered in Illinois, Brigham Young took the reins of leadership of the church, and in 1847, the Mormons began their famous pioneer trek to Salt Lake City, an area which was not desirable to others, in hopes that at last they would be able to live in peace.)

When the mob arrived at Haun's Mill, the women and children fled into the woods for safety, and the men ran into the blacksmith shop, and attempted to defend the settlement from that position. The blacksmith shop, however, was made of hewn logs, and there were cracks (the crack width being about 2") between the logs. The Mob came right up to the blacksmith shop and poked the barrels of their rifles through those cracks and opened fire on those inside. William Sisson Champlin was inside. And when the massacre was over, there were only two survivors from inside the blacksmith shop.

William was a smart man. When he saw what was happening, he laid down on the floor, and as his comrades fell to the ground, dead, he pulled their bodies over the top of his own, and pretended he was dead. When the mob rushed into the blacksmith shop after opening fire, they saw that William had new boots on his feet, and they wanted those boots. He allowed them to take the boots, all the while pretending he was dead, and as a result, he lived, and for the rest of his days, he was known as "Old Possum". His wife and children who had fled into the woods also survived.

Alonzo Packer, the bass drum player, who died Friday, March 23, 1917, was the first member of the band to die and his friend, James Fall Freestone, the second. That was all that needed to be said. A lifetime of meaning and emotion were packed within these few words. Ten days after Alonzo died James also died."

1836. William Sisson CHAMPLIN (Mercy SISSON, William, William, Thomas, George, Richard) was born 16 Apr 1794 in Shelburne, Vermont. He died 29 Jan 1861 in Lehi, Utah, Utah.

William Sisson Champlin and his family joined the Mormon Church in the 1830's and migrated to Missouri. He was the son of Joseph Champlin of Westerly, Rhode Island, and Mercy Sisson of Stonington, CT.

The Sissons settled in Independence, Missouri, and were driven out of that area along with the other Mormons. They subsequently located themselves in Clay County Missouri until the Mormons were driven out of there, and then located in Caldwell County, Missouri. Caldwell County was set up at that time by the government, as a county specifically for the Mormons to live in, in order to avoid further conflicts. However, there were some of the old settlers who remained in the county, and they were not happy to have the Mormons as neighbors. You see, Missouri was a slave state, and the Mormons were opposed to slavery. So the aim of the old settlers was to expel the Mormons from the state to ensure the state remained pro-slavery.

William Sisson and his family lived at a place called Haun's Mill. It was a Mormon settlement, but not a very large one. The largest Mormon settlement in Caldwell County was Far West which had about 5,000 residents. The Mormons were aware of the rising hostilities against them, and as a result, the Prophet Joseph Smith counseled those at Haun's Mill to come to Far West for safety. It was October 30th, 1838. William and his family were concerned about having food to last them through the winter at Far West, and so in preparation to go there, they were digging up carrots that day. As they did so, the mob rode in on horseback, and a massacre ensued. A couple of days after the massacre, the Governor of Missouri, Governor Boggs, issued his famous "extermination order" which resulted in the Mormons fleeing to Illinois for safety. The extermination order called for the Mormons to be driven from the state, or exterminated if necessary. (After Joseph Smith was murdered in Illinois, Brigham Young took the reins of leadership of the church, and in 1847, the Mormons began their famous pioneer trek to Salt Lake City, an area which was not desirable to others, in hopes that at last they would be able to live in peace.)

When the mob arrived at Haun's Mill, the women and children fled into the woods for safety, and the men ran into the blacksmith shop, and attempted to defend the settlement from that position. The blacksmith shop, however, was made of hewn logs, and there were cracks (the crack width being about 2") between the logs. The Mob came right up to the blacksmith shop and poked the barrels of their rifles through those cracks and opened fire on those inside. William Sisson Champlin was inside. And when the massacre was over, there were only two survivors from inside the blacksmith shop.

William was a smart man. When he saw what was happening, he laid down on the floor, and as his comrades fell to the ground, dead, he pulled their bodies over the top of his own, and pretended he was dead. When the mob rushed into the blacksmith shop after opening fire, they saw that William had new boots on his feet, and they wanted those boots. He allowed them to take the boots, all the while pretending he was dead, and as a result, he lived, and for the rest of his days, he was known as "Old Possum". His wife and children who had fled into the woods also survived.

Evidence that Henry Sisson Richardson was a son of Jesse Richardson:

First, Henry and Elizabeth Richardson had a son named John Cuddeback Richardson, born 1842 in Hancock County, Illinois, died 1928 in Gridley, Butte, California. In the 1850 census of Hancock County, Jesse Richardson, 66, and his wife Sarah, 65, are shown living with "Peter Cudderback", age 9, born in Illinois. Peter Cuddeback (1842-1914) appears to have been a son of Henry's sister Sarah Ann Richardson (1815-1885) by her husband, thus Henry's brother-in-law, John Cuddeback (1812-1870).

Second, a letter, 29 Sep 1931, from Artie Richardson Nugent to the War Department pension bureau, Washington, D.C.: "Dear Sirs — I am writing to get a record of my great grandfather, Jesse Richardson, who was the father of my grandfather Henry Sissons Richardson." Obviously the Revolutionary War soldier Jesse Richardson cannot have been Henry Sisson Richardson's father, but Artie Richardson's inadvertant conflation of the two Jesse Richardsons is understandable. It seems clear from the evidence that Henry Sisson Richardson was the soldier's grandson, through the soldier's namesake son.

The Richardson and Cuddeback families' relationship to Mormonism:

According to George C. Mansfield's History of Butte County, California (Los Angeles: Historic Record Company, 1918), page 922, in 1837 Henry Sisson Richardson's abovenamed brother-in-law John Cuddeback "removed to Hancock County, Illinois, where he was a pioneer farmer and helped to drive the Mormons out of Nauvoo." Five years later, Henry Sisson Richardson and his wife Elizabeth Lumley named a son after John Cuddeback. It would be a stretch to suppose that this was specifically because they approved of his acts as a persecutor of early Mormons, but it certainly doesn't appear that they disapproved.

Henry Sisson Richardson's middle name may constitute a small historic irony. It's worth noting that the most recent common (known) ancestor of DDB and TNH is Christopher Champlin of Rhode Island (1656-1732). One of Christopher Champlin's great-great grandsons was TNH ancestor William Sisson Champlin (born 1792 in Vermont, died 1861 in Utah), whose family became Mormon in the 1830s and were as a consequence violently driven out of several parts of Missouri in which they attempted to settle in that decade. William Sisson Champlin got his middle name from his mother, a descendant of several generations of Sissons of Rhode Island. We know nothing about the origins, or even maiden name, of Henry Sisson Richardson's mother, but it would be poignant if, through her, he descended from some of the same Sissons.

[…] Henry S. and Elizabeth (Lumly) Richardson. The former came from Ohio and the latter from England. [In 1844, Henry Richardson] moved the family to St. Louis, Mo.; and in the early spring of 1849, he started across the great plains in wagons drawn by ox teams, with his wife and children, arriving in Placerville in July of the same year. He soon engaged in mining in El Dorado County, then, the same year, in Butte County, on Feather River, near Bidwell's Bar, and later ran a general store at Slate Creek. In 1852 Henry Richardson returned East and in 1853 drove a band of cattle across the plains to California. He also did teaming out of Marysville, grading, and hauling lumber, and he also ran a livery stable. He erected a building in Marysville in 1854, on E Street, part of which is now standing, and also built a stable on F Street, a couple of years later.

In 1857, however, Mr. Richardson sold out and located in Oroville, and in the fall of 1860 he took up one hundred sixty acres on Dry Creek, near what is now Nelson. He bought land adjoining, both government and railroad land, until he owned seven hundred sixty acres. He farmed the same until 1872, when he sold out and moved to Oroville. In 1878, with his wife and some of his children, he drove a team across the plains to Grayson County, Texas, where he bought thirteen hundred acres. He was very successful in California, and carried with him to Texas, as the result of his long labors and investments here, a round sum of seventy-five thousand dollars. He died in Texas in 1880, honored both as a brave member of early vigilance committees and as an Odd Fellow.

She was serving as a counselor in the ward Relief Society at the time and she and the Relief Society President were on the way to the temple for the wedding. The RS President was driving the car then they were hit and killed. The wedding had to be postponed until after the funeral. One of the older gentlemen in our ward who became a great friend of mine because he was always studying the gospel and knew the latest discoveries about the Book of Mormon, etc. His name was Lee Crandall, and he was always giving firesides etc. He was awesome. We shared books back and forth and one day we were talking family history and I related mine and he about fell out of his chair -- his mother was the Relief Society President that was driving the car when she and Grandma were hit and killed. Small world isn't it."

According to an account of the life of Clara Packer written by her daughter Zelma (b. 1904), in papers of Paul Leslie Crandall now held by P & T Nielsen Hayden, the accident happened on 10 Oct 1929, and while Viola Nichols died in the hospital three hours after the accident, Clara "was seriously injured and never fully recovered, but was able to come to [the Gilbert Relief Society] meeting on Nov. 5, and did not miss a meeting until the end of the year. She presided for the last time on December 17, 1929."

According to the same account, on 17 Jan 1928 Clara Packer succeeded Barbara Allen as president of the Gilbert Relief Society. Barbara Allen had herself been elected on 13 Jul 1927, but moved to Mesa in January 1928. We believe this Barbara Allen to be, in fact, Clara Packer's daughter-in-law, TNH's grandmother.

Sylvia Wright, a freelance writer who frequently and humorously commented in national magazines on trends in modern living, died of cancer Saturday at her home in Cambridge, Mass. She was 64 years old.

Miss Wright was also a former editor of Harpers Bazaar. A collection of her magazine articles, ''Get Away From Me With Those Christmas Gifts,'' was published by McGraw-Hill in 1957. She was also the author of a novel, ''A Shark Infested Rice Pudding.''

After her graduation from Bryn Mawr College, Miss Wright edited and prepared for publication ''Islandia,'' a Utopian novel about an imaginary country written by her father, the late Austin Tappen [sic] Wright, who was a professor of law at the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Pennsylvania. The novel, which has been a steady seller, was published in 1942, reissued in 1958. It is currently published by Arno Press Inc. and the New American Library.

At her death, Miss Wright was writing a biography of her great-aunt, Melusina Fay Peirce, an early feminist and first wife of the American physicist, mathematician and philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce.

Miss Wright is survived by her husband, Paul J. Mitarachi; a son, John; a sister, Phyllis King of Manhattan; and two brothers, Benjamin and William Wright.

Barbara was the daughter of Paul L. Crandall and Barbara Allen Crandall. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Victor L. Nielsen, Jr., and her second husband, Emery B. Dowell. She taught high school English and journalism throughout her entire career, most of which took place at Mesa High School. She loved teaching and loved her students, and was very popular with them as well. Several went on to careers in journalism and other aspects of writing.

Barb had a long family history of membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and served in numerous callings as a teacher. Her extended Mesa family took much of her free time and attention, but she managed to travel with friends through Europe after she retired, and enjoyed playing bridge with old friends and colleagues for many years. She will be missed by all who knew her.

"Grandma Nichols was on the way to the temple for the wedding of her son Lee in the Mesa Temple, when the accident occurred at the corner of Main and Gilbert Road, which was way out in the desert. She was serving as a counselor in the ward Relief Society at the time and she and the Relief Society President were on the way to the temple for the wedding. The RS President was driving the car then they were hit and killed. The wedding had to be postponed until after the funeral. One of the older gentlemen in our ward who became a great friend of mine because he was always studying the gospel and knew the latest discoveries about the Book of Mormon, etc. His name was Lee Crandall, and he was always giving firesides etc. He was awesome. We shared books back and forth and one day we were talking family history and I related mine and he about fell out of his chair -- his mother was the Relief Society President that was driving the car when she and Grandma were hit and killed. Small world isn't it."

According to an account of the life of Clara Packer written by her daughter Zelma (b. 1904), in papers of Paul Leslie Crandall now held by P & T Nielsen Hayden, the accident happened on 10 Oct 1929, and while Viola Nichols died in the hospital three hours after the accident, Clara "was seriously injured and never fully recovered, but was able to come to [the Gilbert Relief Society] meeting on Nov. 5, and did not miss a meeting until the end of the year. She presided for the last time on December 17, 1929."

According to the same account, on 17 Jan 1928 Clara Packer succeeded Barbara Allen as president of the Gilbert Relief Society. Barbara Allen had herself been elected on 13 Jul 1927, but moved to Mesa in January 1928. We believe this Barbara Allen to be, in fact, Clara Packer's daughter-in-law, TNH's grandmother.
