[footnote in CP to the above:] "The name is said to be from the manor of Glinton, afterwards Clinton, Northants near Market Deeping, but the Clintons were Oxfordshire people as early as 1230. In N. & Q., 7th Series, vol.viii, p. 486, it is stated that the 1st Earl of Lincoln 'obtained a grant of this very district of Glinton,' no doubt because of the similarity of name. Lower, in his Family Names, states it to be "from Glimpton, anciently written Clinton, co. Oxford. The founder of the family, Geoffrey de Clinton, Treasurer and Chamberlain to King Henry I, is said, by Ordericus (who, as a contemporary, probably can be trusted), to have been of mean parentage, though, according to some accounts he was of the noblest Norman extraction."

Richardson (citation details below) gives a date for the marriage of this Henry Ferrers to Margaret Hexdale of before 30 Sep 1481, when a grant of land in Kent on that date refers to Henry and Margaret as husband and wife. But another recorded grant of the manor of Hamyldon (Hambleton) to Henry and his wife is dated 14 Nov 1468, and a marriage date shortly before that fits much more tidily with Henry's i.p.m. on 17 Oct 1503, in which his and Margaret's son Edward is said to be "age 30 or more".

He fought for Richard III at Bosworth in 1485, and in the wake of that defeat he was attainted, 7 Nov 1485, and all his estates declared forfeit. The following year the new king, Henry VII, granted what had been William's manor of Northfield, Worcestershire to the king's uncle Jasper Tudor, Duke of Bedford. In 1489 William was restored in blood, and granted the reversion of Northfield after the death of Jasper Tudor. Despite this, when Jasper died in 1495, the king took possession of Northfield.

Sir Richard's THIMBLEBY's father was Sir John Thimbleby, 1482-1550, lord of the manor of Irnham. He was a recusant (i.e., one of those who remained loyal to the Roman Catholic Church after the establishment of the Church of England), and in 1536 he led a group of Lincolnshire men in the ill-fated Pilgrimage of Grace, the only substantial resistance to Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries. At the Roman Catholic Church of Corby, Lincolnshire, there is a typed manuscript by Brigadier Trappes Lomax entitled "The Owners of Irnham Hall" (this from the bibliography of David I. A. Steel's A Lincolnshire Village: the Parish of Corby Glen in its Historical Context). This manuscript is on my list of things to see when I visit England next summer.

Whatever the early Tudors' feelings about being dependent on private retinues of this sort, they had little choice, given the limited financial resources of their government. As late as 1536, Sir John Thimbleby "assembled all his tenaunts, frendes and servantes together under the colour to do the kinges service," and then employed them in the Pilgrimage of Grace.

Richard or Sir Richard Cromwell, great-grandfather of Oliver [the] Protector, was a man well known in his day; had been very active in the work of suppressing monasteries; a righthand man to Thomas the Mauler [Thomas Cromwell, called Malleus Monachoroum, Mauler of Monasteries]: and indeed it was on Monastic Property, chiefly or wholly, that he had made for himself a sumptuous estate in those Fen regions. Now, of this Richard Cromwell there are two Letters to Thomas Cromwell, 'Vicar-General,' Earl of Essex, which remain yet visible among the Manuscripts of the British Museum; in both of which he signs himself with his own hand, 'your most bounden Nephew,' -- an evidence sufficient to set the point at rest. Copies of the Letters are in my possession; but I grudge to inflict them on the reader. One of them, the longer of the two, stands printed, with all or more than all its original misspelling and confused obscurity, in Noble: it is dated 'Stamford,' without day or year; but the context farther dates it as contemporary with the Lincolnshire Rebellion, or Anti-Reformation riot, which was directly followed by the more formidable 'Pilgrimage of Grace' in Yorkshire to the like effect, in the autumn of 1536. Richard, in company with other higher official persons, represents himself as straining every nerve to beat down and extinguish this traitorous fanatic flame, kindled against the King's Majesty and his Reform of the Church; has an eye in particular to a certain Sir John Thymbleby in Lincolnshire, whom he would fain capture as a ringleader; suggests that the use of arms should be prohibited to these treasonous populations, except under conditions; -- and seems hastening on, with almost furious speed; towards Yorkshire and the Pilgrimage of Grace, we may conjecture.

[Carlyle's footnote to the above:] This first letter is in the Harley MSS. (vol. 283, f. 156). It is clearly written in a clerk's hand, and the only "obscurity" about it is that a good many contractions are employed, but they are used quite regularly. From its connexion with other letters of the same period, it must have been written on October 14, 1536. Sir John Thimbleby did not need capturing, as he had "come in" a day or two before.

Mr. Peacock in his Yorkshire Catholics, pp. 12, 13, mentions several of this family as recusants (1604). He says of Mr John Thimbleby [Thimelby] of Normanton parish: "This was a member of an old Lincolnshire family. They were originally of Poolham manor, near Horncastle; but subsequently, by the marriage of Richard Thimbleby with Elizabeth, sister and co-heiress of Sir Godfrey Hilton of Irnham, that estate came into the family. They were always Roman Catholics. At the restoration of the old faith under Mary, Mrs. Elizabeth Thimbleby, a nun, lent a cope and a chasuble to the church of Irnham, which were reclaimed by Mr. John Thimbleby on the accession of Elizabeth. The John Thimbleby mentioned in the text was probably the grandson of the above. The male line of the Lincolnshire Thimblebys ended in 1712, on the death of another John Thimbleby of Irnham. His heiress, Mary, had married Thomas Clifford [Gifford] of Chillington, county Stafford. The estate passed out of her descendants' hands by sale a few years ago."

The pardon roll of 1553 described Thymbleby as 'of Irnham ... late of Lynn Regis, Norfolk,' but he still had a house at Lynn in July of that year, when (presumably as one of Northumberland's adherents) he was first committed to the custody of the knight marshal, and then licensed to return to Lynn, on condition that he kept away from court until Queen Mary's pleasure was known. A convinced protestant, he was classified as 'earnest in religion.' There are few references to him during the last 20 years of his long life, during which he lived as a country gentleman and sheep-farmer.

He doeth not Catachise the yowth." Presumably he subsequently regained the parish.

Jeremy Clarke (also known as Jeremiah Clarke) was an early colonial settler and President of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. Born into a prominent family in England, he was a merchant who came to New England with his wife, Frances Latham, and four stepchildren, settling first at Portsmouth in 1638, but the following year joining William Coddington and others in establishing the town of Newport. Here he held a variety of civic positions until 1648 when Coddington's election as President of the colony was disputed, and Clarke was chosen to serve in that office instead. He was the father of Walter Clarke, another colonial governor of Rhode Island, and also had family connections with several other future governors of the colony.

He was a Puritan whose piety and iconoclasm (he personally destroyed a great deal of church art and stained glass) was celebrated in a hagiographic biography of him written by William Hinde, husband of Margaret Fox, sister to Bruen's second wife Anne Fox.

"According to Hinde, it was the death of Bruen's father in 1587 that prompted a radical transformation in Bruen's lifestyle. Whether because of a spiritual crisis or because of the financial constraints imposed by his new responsibilities towards eleven siblings, including his sister Katherine Bruen (to become famous in 1601 because of her putative deathbed loss of faith), Bruen imposed a strict code of piety on the household. He began by disparking the estate and suppressing hunting and gaming, and subsequently enforced a culture of discipline on family, servants, and tenants alike. This not only involved prayers seven times daily but also attendance at both morning and evening sermons on Sundays, usually without departing from the church in between. The knowledge of scripture among even his illiterate household servants became legendary: Hinde drew particular attention to 'Old Robert', Robert Pashfield (fl. c. 1600), servant, whose familiarity with the Bible was such that he could cite chapter and verse of almost any scriptural text, despite his inability to read. Bruen also suppressed the drinking, dancing, and sport associated with the annual festivities of the St Andrew's day wakes that he (and Hinde) regarded as popish and profane." "BRUEN, JOHN (1560-1625), puritan layman, was the son of a Cheshire squire whose family had long been settled at Bruen Stapleford, and is believed to have given its name to the township. There had been a succession from the middle of the thirteenth century. The elder John Bruen of Bruen Stapleford was thrice married. His union with Anne, the sister of Sir John Done, was childless, but his second wife brought him fourteen children, of whom Katharine, afterwards the wife of William Brettargh, and John, who, although not the eldest born, became by survivorship his heir, were remarkable for the fervour of their puritanism. John was in his tender years sent to his uncle Dutton of Dutton, where for three years he was taught by the school-master James Roe. The Dutton family had by charter the control of the minstrels of the county. Young Bruen became an expert dancer. 'At that time,' he said, 'the holy Sabbaths of the Lord were wholly spent, in all places about us, in May-games and May-poles, pipings and dancings, for it was a rare thing to hear of a preacher, or to have one sermon in a year.' When about seventeen he and his brother Thomas were sent as gentlemen-commoners to St. Alban Hall, Oxford, where they remained about two years. He left the university in 1579, and in the following year was married by his parents to a daughter of Mr. Hardware, who had been twice mayor of Chester. Bruen at this time keenly enjoyed the pleasures of the chase, and, in conjunction with Ralph Done, 'kept fourteen couple of great mouthed dogs.' On the death of his father in 1587 his means were reduced; he cast off his dogs, killed the game, and disparked the land. His children were brought up strictly, and his choice of servants fell upon the sober and pious. One of these, Robert Pashfield, or 'Old Robert,' though unable to read or write, had acquired so exact a knowledge of the Bible, that he could 'almost always' tell the book and chapter where any particular sentence was to be found. The old man had a leathern girdle, which served him as a memoria technica, and was marked into portions for the several books of the Bible, and with points and knots for the smaller divisions. Bruen in summer rose between three and four, and in winter at five, and read prayers twice a day. His own seasons for prayer were seven times daily. He removed the stained glass in Tarvin Church, and defaced the sculptured images. On the Sunday he walked from his house, a mile distant, to the church, and was followed by the greater part of his servants, and called upon such of his tenants as lived on the way, so that when he reached the church it was at the head of a goodly procession. He rarely went home to dinner after morning prayers, but continued in the church till after the evening service. He maintained a preacher at his own house, and afterwards for the parish. Bruen's house became celebrated, and a number of 'gentlemen of rank became desirous of sojourning under his roof for their better information in the way of God, and the more effectual reclaiming of themselves and their families.' Perkins, the puritan divine, called Bruen Stapleford, 'for the practice and power of religion, the very topsail of all England.' His wife died suddenly, and after a time he married the 'very amiable and beautiful' Ann Fox, whom he first met at a religious meeting in Manchester. For a year they dwelt at her mother's house at Rhodes, near Manchester. He then returned to Stapleford, and again his house became the abode of many scions of gentility. Bruen's second wife died after ten years of married life, and the widower broke up his household with its twenty-one boarders and retired to Chester, where he cleared the debt of his estate, saw some of his children settled, and maintained the poor of his parish by the produce of two mills in Stapleford, whither he returned with his third wife, Margaret. He had an implicit belief in special providences, 'judgments,' witchcraft, &c. He kept a hospitable house, and was kind and charitable to the poor of his neighbourhood and of Chester. He refused to drink healths even at the high sheriff's feast. Towards the end of his life his prayers were twice accompanied by 'ravishing sights.' He died after an illness, which was seen to be mortal, in 1625, at the age of 65. There is a portrait of him in Clark's 'Marrow of Ecclesiastical History.' This has been re-engraved by Richardson. Among the Harleian MSS. is a compilation by him entitled 'A godly profitable collection of divers sentences out of Holy Scripture, and variety of matter out of several divine authors.' These are commonly called his cards, and are fifty-two in number. The same collection contains the petition of his son, Calvin Bruen, of Chester, mercer, respecting the treatment he received for visiting Prynne when he was taken through Chester to imprisonment at Carnarvon Castle. The life of John Bruen was not eventful, and he is chiefly notable as an embodiment of the puritan ideal of a pious layman." Her short life was dominated by her illustrious elder brother, the godly gentleman John Bruen, who had care of Katherine and ten of her siblings, bringing them up in an atmosphere of strict household discipline and rigorous religious observance. About 1599 Katherine married another of the self-professed godly, William Brettergh of Brettergh Holt, near Liverpool, with whom she had one child, Anne. The two shared an extraordinarily pious lifestyle at Little Woolton in Childwall, Lancashire, reading at least eight chapters of the Bible every day and hearing two sermons on Sundays whenever possible, and she appears to have stiffened his resolve in withstanding the hostility, mockery, and harassment of the parish's strong Roman Catholic minority, organized by a local seminary priest, Thurstan Hunt, and the lord of the manors of Speke and Garston, Edward Norris. In turn, William Brettergh's attempt as high constable of West Derby hundred to apprehend recusants within the parishes of Huyton and Childwall in May 1600 provoked not only a full-scale riot but the maiming of Brettergh's cattle on two separate occasions over the following months.

However, it is Katherine's premature and agonizing death rather than her short life which brought her most fame, and which provoked the biographies that provide virtually all the evidence of her godly lifestyle. At the age of twenty-two she succumbed to an unknown illness, and on her deathbed suffered from a terrible crisis of faith, during which she raged against God's unmercifulness and threw her Bible repeatedly to the floor. She died on 31 May 1601. Her agonies formed the centrepiece of a polemical account of her embattled life appended to the two sermons preached by William Harrison and William Leigh at her funeral in Childwall church on 3 June 1601, published together in 1602 as Death's Advantage Little Regarded, of which five editions had appeared by 1617 and a further two by 1641. Harrison in particular attempted to explain her deathbed anguish as the consequence of a diabolical assault on her virtue rather than a providential punishment for sin and hypocrisy. As a result her death became not only a gigantic struggle between God and Satan for her soul, but also, through a pamphlet exchange (of which the Catholic side has unfortunately not survived), a furious debate between Romanists and puritans over which religion could promise the more merciful death. From this perspective the conspicuous absence of any reference to Katherine's deathbed crisis in William Hinde's elaborate biography of her older brother, published in 1641, seems striking, perhaps even deliberately evasive.

Her biographers are indignant at the imputation that she died despairing. She was buried at Childwall Church on Wednesday, 3 June, as appears from the title of the little book which forms the chief authority as to her life: Death's Advantage little Regarded, or the Soule's Solace against Sorrow, preached in two funerall sermons at Childwall, in Lancashire, at the buriall of Mistris Katherine Brettergh, 3 June 1601. The one by William Harrison, the other by William Leygh, B.D., whereunto is annexed the christian life and godly death of the said gentlewoman, London, 1601. There is a portrait of her in Clarke's second part of the Marrow of Ecclesiastical History, book ii., London, 1675, p. 52, from which it seems that her puritanism did not forbid a very elaborate ruff. The face is oval, the features refined, the hair closely confined by a sort of skull-cap, over which towers a sugarloaf hat.

Richard Weston, 1st Earl of Portland, K. G., was Chancellor of the Exchequer and later Lord Treasurer of England under James I and Charles I, being one of the most influential figures in the early years of Charles I's Personal Rule and the architect of many of the policies that enabled him to rule without raising taxes through Parliament.

Weston was the eldest son and heir of Sir Jerome Weston, High Sheriff of Essex for 1599, and the former Mary Cave. He was born at Roxwell, Essex, and was a student of the Middle Temple. He served as Member of Parliament (MP) for a number of constituencies including Maldon (1601–1603), Midhurst (in the parliament of 1604-1611), Essex (in the Addled Parliament of 1614), Arundel (1622), Bossiney (1624), Callington (1625) and Bodmin (1626). He was knighted in 1603.

During the reign of King James I of England, Weston was sent on embassies to Bohemia, Brussels, and Spain. On the last assignment, he negotiated for the restitution of the Palatine. Upon his return to England in 1621, he was made Chancellor of the Exchequer, and retained the post after the accession of Charles I; he proved a capable financial manager but incurred popular hatred as a (justly) suspected Roman Catholic, while also later earning the enmity of the (Catholic) queen, Henrietta Maria for refusing grants to her favourites. He opposed wars with Spain in 1623 and France in 1626, but managed to find ways of raising the money to fund them when required, even when it was impossible to secure the co-operation of Parliament.

Weston was elevated to the peerage on 13 April 1628, as Baron Weston, of Neyland. He was subsequently made Lord Treasurer of England and invested with the Order of the Garter. His policies proving highly unpopular, he escaped impeachment in 1629 only by the dissolution of Parliament. Nevertheless, he played an important role in the King's Personal Rule without Parliament, finding new sources of revenue while preventing any further increase in the King's expenditure, and being for a time the most influential of Charles's advisers. He persuaded the King to make peace with France in 1629 and Spain in 1630, removing the biggest drain on the treasury, and to sign the secret treaty with Spain in 1634. By the time he died in 1635, the Crown was solvent.

On 17 February 1633, Weston was created Earl of Portland. Lord Portland was married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Pincheon of Writtle in Essex. His second wife was Frances Walgrave of Boreley in Essex. He had three children by his first marriage, including Lady Mary Weston (2 January 1603-after August 1678), who married the 2nd Lord Aston of Forfar in 1629, and Lady Elizabeth Weston, who married John Netterville, 2nd Viscount Netterville. He had seven children by his second marriage, including his son Thomas, who later succeeded as 4th Earl, and Lady Anne Weston, the first of the four wives of Basil Feilding, 2nd Earl of Denbigh. His nephew (his sister's son), Jeremy Clarke, became a Governor of Rhode Island in the American colonies.

“Obadiah Bruen was born in Bruen Stapleford, England, and immigrated to New England with his wife Sarah in 1640. He settled first at Plymouth Colony, and then at Gloucester, Massachusetts (1642), where he was town selectman (1643) and a representative to the Connecticut General Court (1643-1651). He was one of the early settlers at Pequot (later New London), Connecticut, and served as the town clerk (1651-1666) and as a representative from New London in the Connecticut General Court (1652-1666). His name is the only name from New London to appear on the royal charter for the colony of Connecticut. In 1666, he joined an association to found a colony on the Passaic River called Milford (later Newark, New Jersey). He went to New England with his father in 1630, the first of at least eight Atlantic crossings in his lifetime. He was a man of many interests and offices, both in New England and during England's commonwealth period. Notably, back in New England after the Restoration, Richard Saltonstall donated £50 to support the fugitive regicides William Goffe and Edward Whalley, and he was one of the few people who knew where in New England they were hiding. He was also on several occasions embroiled in political conflict with the Winthrop/Dudley government of colonial Boston.

Gershom Bulkeley was an early graduate of Harvard University, receiving his bachelor's degree in 1655 and possibly his master's degree in 1658. After receiving his master's degree he might have married Sarah Chauncy, daughter of then Harvard President, Charles Chauncy. In 1661 became the minister of the Congregational church in New London, CT, where he served for roughly 5 years. He then became minister of the Congregational church in the town of Wethersfield, Connecticut where he served until 1677. He left the ministry and practiced as a physician in Glastonbury, CT.

When the Salem Witch Trials spread from Massachusetts to Connecticut in the autumn of 1692, he expressed considerable scepticism about the evidence, saying that he had heard nothing of any weight to convince him that anyone was guilty of witchcraft. In particular he argued that Marcy Disborough, one of the only two women accused in Connecticut who actually stood trial for witchcraft, was the victim of the malice of her neighbours. Mercy was founded guilty and sentenced to death, but received a reprieve. She was set free and died some time after 1709.

When the boundary dispute between Mass. and New Hampshire was settled this change in name was brought about. [...] Joseph Farwell is styled in the Old Dunstable records 'Ensign Farwell.' He was, immediately after his settlement in the town, employed in various offices in the town business. He was selectman in 1701, 2, 5, 7, 10, and also at earlier dates, highway surveyor in 1706, and on important committees in 1702, 7, 12, 16 and 17. In 1710 Ensign Farwell, Thomas Lund and Joseph Blanchard, selectmen, petitioned the Assembly for aid in supporting the ministry, and in 1711 it is recorded that they received £10 from the Assembly towards payment of salary of Mr. Paris. Jeremy Clarke (also known as Jeremiah Clarke) was an early colonial settler and President of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. Born into a prominent family in England, he was a merchant who came to New England with his wife, Frances Latham, and four stepchildren, settling first at Portsmouth in 1638, but the following year joining William Coddington and others in establishing the town of Newport. Here he held a variety of civic positions until 1648 when Coddington's election as President of the colony was disputed, and Clarke was chosen to serve in that office instead. He was the father of Walter Clarke, another colonial governor of Rhode Island, and also had family connections with several other future governors of the colony.
