Her death certificate gives her birth date as 20 Jun 1867. Her gravestone (clearly a modern marker erected long after her death) says 24 Jun 1868. But the handwritten record of her baptism on 31 Dec 1888 clearly says that she was born 7 Jun 1864.

Known to my family as Grandmother Newton, and to her other grandchildren as Mam, she was a loving, stern woman.

From what I understand of her parents, her mother, Liz Beavin Ryan, was a devoted Catholic. In those days of her marriage at St. Romuald, and thereafter, Liz was unable to attend mass regularly due to the fact she lived in a rural part of the county. And the fact that mass was said once monthly didn't help. Also causing problems was the fact her husband, Tom Ryan, was himself a professed agnostic and did not support his wife's religious life. None of their children were baptized, as a result.

Scores of her schooling were published in the Breckinridge News, showing her to be one of the higher performing students in mathematics, outdone only by her older sister Fan.

So, when Grandmother married Grandpap in 1888, the first thing she did was become baptized into the Catholic church. Her aunt, Genirose Askins, was her sponsor. I learned this fact from the then-priest's own handwritten notes, currently housed at the Breckinridge County archives. Following baptism, she married Grandpap.

All of their children were raised in the church.

Ellen married Virgil Leo Newton on 31 Dec 1888 in St. Rose of Lima, Cloverport, Breckinridge, Kentucky. Virgil (son of Henry Isaac Newton and Margaret Matilda Lewis) was born on 23 Feb 1866; died on 19 Jan 1937 in Breckinridge County, Kentucky. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

The Social Security death index lists his last residence as Greer, in Greenville County, South Carolina. North Carolina death records say he died in Buncombe County, North Carolina, but that his final residence was Beaufort County, South Carolina. His obituary in the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer says that he died in a hospital in Asheville, Buncombe County, North Carolina.

He fought in World War I, and he was a barber.

His obituary in the Messsenger-Inquirer says that he was survived by his wife "Mrs. Flora M. Newton." That obituary gives his street address at death as 1679 Glendale Avenue in Owensboro. The death certificate of Flora M. Gephardt, widow, who died 21 Mar 1960 in Owensboro, shows her living at that same address.
