    Came to New England on the Lyon in 1632. First at Cambridge, where he was a deputy to the general court from 1634 to 1636. He was among the so-called “Adventurers Party” of twenty-five men who set out to explore the area that would become Hartford, led by Founder John Steele in October 1635, prior to the departure from Cambridge of the Rev. Hooker’s party in May 1636. His name is on the Founders Monument in downtown Hartford. He was a deputy to the Connecticut general court from Hartford 1637 to 1653; Treasurer of the Colony 1652, 1654, 1655, 1656 and 1659; Assistant from 1654 to 1659; and Commissioner of the United Colonies 1656 to 1658.

    "John Talcott was one of the most useful men in Connecticut in his generation. He was chosen Ensign of the Hartford Train Band, June 1650, and was referred to as Captain as early as Oct. 1660. He served as Deputy for Hartford, May and Oct. 1660, June and Oct. 1661; and as Assistant of the Colony, 1662 to 1687 inclusive. He was Treasurer of the Colony, 1660 to 1675 inclusive, declining that office in 1676 and 1677. He was one of those named as Patentees of the Royal Charter in 1662. He was a Commissioner for the United Colonies, 1663, 1669, 1671, 1673, 1676. 1683, 1684, and 1686. In March 1663 he was a Commissioner to treat with New Haven relative to the absorption of that colony by Connecticut; Commissioner on the New York boundary, Oct. 1663, on the Massachusetts and Rhode Island boundaries, Oct. 1664, and on the Rhode Island boundary, May 1672. He served on Indian committees, 1671, 1674 and 1676, and on the Militia Committee, July 1666. He was appointed Chief Military Officer, Hartford County, June 1672, and Major, Aug. 1673. In Nov. 1673 he was made Commander-in-Chief against New York; a member of the War Council, Nov. 1673, July 1675, and May 1676; Commander-in-Chief, May 1676, King Philip's War.     He was Commissioner (Justice) for Wethersfield, 1669 to 1684 inclusive. He served as Deputy for Wethersfield to the Connecticut General Assembly at the sessions of Oct. 1669, May and Oct. 1670, May 1671, May and Oct. 1672, May and Oct. 1673, May and Oct. 1674, May 1675, May and Oct. 1676, May and Oct. 1677, May and Oct. 1678, May and Oct. 1679, May and Oct. 1680, May and Oct. 1681, Oct. 1682, May, Oct. and Nov. 1683, May and Oct. 1684. He was Secretary pro tem., Oct. 1684. He was an Assistant of the Colony, 1685 to 1691, until his death. He was a member of the War Council, Oct. 1675 and May 1676, during King Philip's War. In Oct. 1669 he was granted 200 acres.
