As constable of the duchy of Lancaster castle of Pevensey, he was host to a number of eminent political prisoners over the years. In 1405 he received into custody Edward, duke of York, imprisoned after the discovery of his knowledge of the Mortimer plot. Pelham and Edward became friends, and Edward entrusted him with personal letters to the king.
