Various linked Find a Grave pages indicate that the intervening generation was James Smith and his wife Elizabeth Bird.

    Nathaniel married Sarah Parker on 11 Dec 1883 in Whitley County, Kentucky. Sarah (daughter of William Henderson Parker and Sarah "Sally" Patrick) was born on 19 Dec 1863 in Whitley County, Kentucky; died on 1 Jul 1943 in Whitley County, Kentucky; was buried in Steely Cemetery, Williamsburg, Whitley, Kentucky.
