"Henry Sewall was a member of the Company and Fellowship of Drapers of Coventry, an alderman, sheriff in 1582, mayor of Coventry 1587-88 and 1606-7, and a representative of Coventry to the English parliament that met 30 January 1620." [The Descendants of Henry Sewall, citation details below]

His great-grandson Samuel Sewall, chief justice of Massachusetts, described Henry as a "prudent man" who acquired a "great estate." Coventry tax records from just before his death confirm this; he is among the five individuals who pay the most tax. And his inquisition post mortem shows that he died owning sixty-four different properties in and near Coventry, Stoke, and Radford.

Henry married Margaret Gresbrook before 24 Sep 1575. Margaret (daughter of Alverey Gresbrook and Margaret Keene) was born before 1557; died between 10 May 1629 and 20 Nov 1629; was buried in Draper's Chapel, St. Michael's, Coventry, Warwickshire, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

He entered the Drapers Company of Coventry in 1591. He was in Manchester from about 1615 to about 1631. By 1634 he was back in Coventry, and in that year sent his son Henry to New England to begin a plantation. He and his second wife Ellen (Mosley) Nugent followed in 1635.

With his son Henry, he was a founder of Newbury, Massachusetts. He moved to Rowley between 1647 and 1649.

He appears to have been a troublesome and at times violent person. Both his father's and his mother's wills express hope that he will find the humility to make recompense for his many offenses, particularly (it is clearly implied) against his mother. He contested his mother's will (in which she left him just twelve pence) in litigation that extended over years. The records of Massachusetts Bay between 1638 and 1654 include four accusations against Henry Sewall for battery, and three for interrupting public meetings. And finally, in 1635, the same year that Henry Sewall and his second wife Ellen emigrated to Boston, the authorities of Massachusetts Bay granted him and his wife permission to live apart. She is last seen in the public records on 5 Jun 1638, when Henry was presented by a grand jury for beating her.

Given the above, it is perhaps not unconnected that his son Henry found reason to return to England in 1646, and to not return to New England permanently -- or bring his own wife and family over -- until 1661, five years after his father died.

He emigrated to New England on the Elizabeth & Dorcas in 1634, an ill-starred crossing during which sixty passengers died.

He returned to England in 1646 with his Dummer in-laws. The in-laws never returned to New England; he returned to New England briefly in 1650 or so, then permanently in 1659. He brought his wife and children over in 1661.

Sometime while in England in the 1650s, he became a minister at North Baddesley, Hampshire. He appears to have been on friendly terms with Richard Cromwell, who briefly became Lord Protector between his father's death and the Restoration.

Henry married Jane Dummer on 25 Mar 1646 in Newburyport, Essex, Massachusetts. Jane (daughter of Stephen Dummer and Alice Archer) was born about 1627 in England; died on 13 Jan 1701 in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

He and his family emigrated to Maryland in 1661, settling in Calvert County. He served in the provincial assembly, and as a member of the provincial council, provincial secretary, and justice of the provincial court. He returned to England in 1664 and died there soon after.
