In the 1880 census, he and Catherine ("Cathrin") are living in Bethel, Clark County, and his occupation is given as "carpet weaver." The 1880 census says that his parents and his wife's parents were all born in Pennsylvania.

He enlisted in the US army on 28 Jul 1813 and was discharged three weeks later on 18 Aug. His rank is given in the record as "drummer." He was in Capt. Jacob Richhart's company.

His gravestone and his Chicago Tribune obituary (citation details below) both give his death date as 5 Dec 1963, not 6 Dec as asserted by Fred D. Clark (citation details below).
