Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Chamberlin Graham "Chip" Carr was born on 11 Apr 1859 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England; was christened on 25 Feb 1860 in Christ Church, Southwark, London, England; died on 29 Jun 1935 in Gold Hill, Jackson, Oregon; was buried in Rock Point Pioneer Cemetery, Gold Hill, Jackson, Oregon.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate birth: 1860, England
    • Alternate death: 30 Jun 1935, Medford, Jackson, Oregon

    Notes:

He was a gold miner. He became a naturalized US citizen in 1885.

He was born in 11 Apr 1859 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, not 11 Apr 1850 in London as stated in the obituary below. He was baptized on 25 Feb 1860 in Southwark, which by then had long been part of London. And although the obituary scrambles some dates, it is true that Chamberlin Carr was 11 when he traveled by ship to Quebec with his parents and two sisters: the collection "Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935" on ancestry.com contains the handwritten record of the arrival at Quebec City on 25 Jul 1870, in the S. S. Russia out from Liverpool (with one stop at Londonderry, Ireland), of W. C. Carr, Jane Carr, Chamberlain Carr, Adelaide (presumably Adeline) Carr, and Ellis (presumably Mary Alice) Carr.

(The S. S. Russia was a Cunard liner launched in 1867; in April-May of the following year Charles Dickens returned to England on it following his second tour of the United States, and he was fulsome in its praise for the ship.)

The other notable departure from fact in the obituary below is that William C. Carr ("Mr. Carr") did not die in Crescent City, Oregon in 1870, in the final stages of their long journey from England; he lived to die on 2 Jan 1921 in Jackson County, Oregon. However, his wife Jane does not appear with the rest of the family in the 1880 census; perhaps "Mr. Carr" here is a simple typo for "Mrs. Carr."

"'Chip' Carr, Pioneer Foots Creek Miner, Is Taken By Death", Medford (Oregon) Mail Tribune, 1 Jul 1935, p. 8:

Chamberlain (Chip) Carr, a resident of Foots Creek, was born in London, England, April 11, 1850. At the age of 11 he traveled by ship to Quebec, Canada, with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Carr, and two sisters. They traveled by train from Quebec to Detroit, Mich., continued by train to Omaha. Neb., changed trains and headed for Sacramento, Cal. From Sacramento they traveled to San Francisco and from there they boarded a boat for Crescent City, where Mr. Carr became sick and lived but a few days. There Mr. Carr's brother Thomas met the family with wagon and team and the family traveled over the Crescent City mountains to Althouse creek. They settled there and mined until 1877. In that year "Chip" Carr came to Foots creek, and had lived there until his death Saturday.

He was married to Frances Prefountain in the year 1893, in Yreka, Cal. To this union, five children were born, Mrs. Elizabeth Harrison, William Harry, Mrs. Maudie Carle, Leslie and Freddy, deceased. Besides the five children, he is survived by his wife Frances of Foots creek, and one sister, Mrs. Adeline Pomeroy of Hisson, Wash.

"Chip" Carr has followed mining all his life, and was acquainted with many of the old pioneers of the valley.

Funeral services will be held at the I.O.O.F. hall in Gold Hill at 2 p.m. Tuesday, with Rev. D.E. Millard officiating. Interment In Rock Point cemetery will be conducted by the Gold Hill lodge of which Mr. Carr was a member. Conger Funeral Parlors in charge.
