William Axtell

Notes:

A prosperous brewer and burgmaster, called "gentleman," albeit perhaps illiterate. Owned a malthouse, a spring, and substantial land.

William married Thomasine before 1614 in Berkhamsted St. Peter, Hertfordshire, England. Thomasine was born about 1594; died after May 1638. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

"For all practical purposes, Thomas Axtell received only a pittance in the 1638 will of his father. This suggests that, at the tender age of just 20, Thomas had already received his portion, or that he had been apprenticed out in such a way that his estate was already established, or that father and son had come to some insurmountable difference of opinion. It might also be that Thomas's uncle Henry Axtell had bequeathed a good legacy to Thomas and father William found it unnecessary to add to it. Whatever the cause, Thomas's English prospects were sufficiently bleak by 1641 that he considered taking his small family across the ocean to New England." Emigrated sometime between 1641 and when he took the Sudbury oath of allegience, 9 Jul 1645.

Notes:

"Colonel Daniel Axtell [...] was captain of the Parliamentary Guard at the trial of King Charles I at Westminster Hall in 1649. Shortly after the Restoration he was hanged, drawn and quartered as a regicide. Apart from his participation in the regicide, he is best remembered for his participation in Pride's Purge of the Long Parliament." [Wikipedia]

His execution was noted in Pepys's diary entry for 19 Oct 1660.

The Ancestry of Eva Belle Kempton 1878-1908, Part III (citation details below) gives her death date as 16 Apr 1704, citing "Sudbury VR, 306" as its source, but this seems to be an error, as the 1903 publication of the Vital Records of Sudbury, Massachusetts, to the Year 1850 (citation details below) clearly says, on page 306, that "Mary [Goodenow], w. Capt. John" died "Apr. 14, 1704".

Mary married Capt. John Goodenow on 19 Sep 1656 in Sudbury, Middlesex, Massachusetts. John (son of Capt. Edmund Goodenow and Anne) was born about 1635 in England; died on 6 Aug 1721 in Sudbury, Middlesex, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Torrey identifies the woman married by Samuel Bush "(?1642-1733)" in or by 1677 as "Mary GOODWIN (-1687), dau. John", although one of his citations is James Cox Brady and His Ancestry (citation details below), which gives the Goodenow model presented here. We are opting for the Goodenow model based on its development in volume 3 of The Ancestry of Eva Belle Kempton 1878-1908 (1996-2004), citation details below.

Mary married Samuel Bush about 1 May 1677. Samuel (son of John Bush and Elizabeth) was born about 1651; died on 7 May 1733 in Westfield, Hampden, Massachusetts; was buried in Old Burying Ground, Westfield, Hampden, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
