He went to New England with his father in 1630, the first of at least eight Atlantic crossings in his lifetime. He was a man of many interests and offices, both in New England and during England's commonwealth period. Notably, back in New England after the Restoration, Richard Saltonstall donated Ā£50 to support the fugitive regicides William Goffe and Edward Whalley, and he was one of the few people who knew where in New England they were hiding. He was also on several occasions embroiled in political conflict with the Winthrop/Dudley government of colonial Boston.Richard married Muriel Gurdon on 4 Jul 1633 in All Hallows, Honey Lane, London, England.
