Joan de Dutton

Notes:

VCH Lancaster says only that she was "daughter of Sir Thomas de Dutton", without spelling out that this was Thomas de Dutton of Dutton, Cheshire (1314-1381). Annals of Warrington (Chetham Society) adds that her father was Thomas de Dutton of Dutton (emphasis ours), which helps. But a footnote to her mention in VCH Lancaster clarifies matters most of all: "John son of Gilbert de Haydock and Joan his wife occur in 1353; she was the widow of Richard le Boteler, with whom she had a third of the Boteler lands; these she took to her second husband, whose heirs retained them, an act which led to disputes between the families not settled till the 16th century. In 1368 a number of family arrangements were made. William de Wigan, chaplain, regranted to John de Haydock and Joan his wife, daughter of Sir Thomas de Dutton, various lands in Newton, with remainders to the children of John and Joan, and then to Sir Lawrence de Dutton [...]" Sir Lawrence de Dutton was the eldest surviving heir to his father Thomas de Dutton of Dutton, Cheshire (1314-1381) and his wife Ellen Thornton. This seems evidence enough to confirm that Joan's father was in fact this Thomas de Dutton.

Fought on the Yorkist side at Wakefield, for which he was made a knight banneret by Richard, duke of York, father of Edward IV.

Peter married Margaret Molyneux between 1430 and 1432. Margaret (daughter of Richard Molyneux and Ellen Radcliffe) died on 13 May 1460 in Bradley-in-Burtonwood, Lancashire, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

He was present at the siege of Berwick in 1482, where he was made a knight banneret by Edward IV. In 1511 he entered into holy orders and became a priest.

Peter married Ellen Savage about 1467. Ellen (daughter of John Savage, Mayor of Chester and Katherine Stanley) died on 17 May 1491 in Bewganet, Sussex, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Richardson's Royal Ancestry (citation details below) (3:83; 3:557) makes Jane Legh a daughter of Piers Legh and his first wife, Jane Gerard. But that would make Jane Leigh and Thomas Gerard--who are noted as having been second cousins through common Savage ancestry--into first cousins, both grandchildren of Peter Gerard and Margaret Stanley. John Blythe Dobson (citation details below) says that "there is no doubt" that Jane Legh who married Thomas Gerard was a daughter, not of Piers Legh's first wife Jane Gerard, but rather his second wife Margaret de Tyldesley, and this seems more plausible.

Jane married Thomas Gerard before 1522, and was divorced on 27 Nov 1550. Thomas (son of Thomas Gerard and Margery Trafford) was born between 1502 and 1512 in of Bryn in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire, England; died after 1550. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
