    Count in Aguilar.

"Martin Flainez, also recorded as Martin Alfonso Osorio, was the son of conde Flain Fernández and his second wife Toda Fernández. He was one of the most powerful members of the nobility of León during the reign of Alfonso VI 'the Brave,' king of Castile and León. His first mention in medieval sources was in May 1065 when he participated with his mother Toda and his brother Fernando in a donation to the cathedral of León. His brother Fernando was banished and their property confiscated for rebelling against the king in 1078, and Martin, who became count in 1081, became responsible for restoring the fortunes of his family. He ruled as the king's tenente (consul) of the tenencias of Simancas and Cabezon in 1092, of Aguilar between 1094 and 1107, and of the city of León in 1104." [Leo van de Pas]

"According to Lucas de Tuy, writing his Chronicon mundi over a hundred years later, Martín was a victim of the Battle of Uclés in May 1108. A charter of the monastery of Sahagún dated 17 November 1108 cites Martín as still living, although it may contain an error in the dating clause. There is no other reference to Martín later than 31 March 1108." [Wikipedia]

    Notes:

    Count in Leon.

"Osorio Martínez (Latin: Osorius Martini) was a magnate from the Province of León in the Empire of Alfonso VII. He served the emperor militarily throughout his long career, which peaked in 1138–41. Besides the documentary sources, which are somewhat meagre at times after his fall from royal favour, he is mentioned in two episodes in the Chronica Adefonsi imperatoris. He supported Ferdinand II of León after Alfonso's death (1157), but he died in a Castilian civil war in 1160. [...] Osorio died at the hands of his son-in-law, Fernando Rodríguez de Castro, husband of his daughter Constanza, at the Battle of Lobregal in March 1160, fighting on the side of the House of Lara in the civil war for control of the regency of the young Alfonso VIII." Mayordomo Mayor to King Fernando II.

    From Leo van de Pas:

Gonzalo Osorio, also known as Gonzalo Osórez, was a noble member of the house of Flainez as the son of conde Osorio Martinez and Teresa Fernández.

Although Gonzalo did not hold the rank of count, he succeeded his father in the tenencias (fiefs, tenancies) of Villalobos, Mayorga, Ribera, of Zamora and Valderas. He was lord high steward of Fernando II, King of León from 1176 to 1178 and in 1187.

The name of Osorio's wife is not recorded, but he had four sons and three daughters, of whom only Osorio is recorded with progeny.

Like his mother, Gonzalo was a benefactor of the Order of Hospitallers, but he applied for and received a loan from the order. In his will he left a sum to the Order but he died about 1180 before repaying the loan, and his sisters Aldonza, Sancha, Constanza and Jimena gave the town of Ribola to the Order to settle the debt.

    Notes:

Todd A. Farmerie and Nathaniel L. Taylor's "Notes on the Ancestry of Sancha de Ayala" (New England Historical and Genealogical Register 103, 1998) presents a reconstruction of her ancestry which they describe as "possible but problematic," placing her father García Gómez Carillo, lord of Mazuela and Ormaza, as son of another García Gómez Carillo, alcade of the city of Jerez de la Frontera in 1264, whose wife was an Urraca Alfonso, natural daughter of Alfonso de Molina (1203-1272), son of Alfonso IX, King of Leon and Galicia, by his wife Berenguela, daughter of Alfonso VIII of Castile, granddaughter of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine.

On his own website, in Cassandra Elizabeth Taylor's royal descents, Taylor subsequently noted that "[t]he ancestry of Juana García Carrillo is disputed in secondary sources, though her grandson, Pero López de Ayala, asserts that his grandmother's grandfather was García Gómez Carrillo, 'él de los garfios', who is known to have had Urraca, illegitimate daughter of the infante Alfonso de Molina, as wife. [...] [T]his reconstruction of the Carrillo family disagrees with other available modern reconstructions, which however are not trustworthy in themselves." And on 23 Feb 2017, Farmerie noted that while the Osorio descent for Sancha de Ayala presented in his and Taylor's 1998 article has subsequently been accepted by three independent Iberian historians, "[t]he Carrillo descent, on the other hand, has received no attention at all, and I have come to view it with skepticism. The reasoning remains sound, but I am not sure the conclusion was."

From "The Well-Beloved Mother-in-law of Robert Marbury" by F. N. Craig, citation details below:

In the funeral of Henry VII in 1509, [Robert Marbury] was a yeoman to the King's Grandame (that is, Henry VII's grandmother, Lady Margaret Beaufort, wife successively of Edmund Tudor, Earl of Richmond; Sir Henry Stafford; and Thomas Stanley, 1st Earl of Derby). In 1510, as yeoman usher of the Queen's Chamber, he had a grant to be feodary [i.e., one who holds land of an overlord on condition of homage] of the duchy of Exeter within county Devon, during [the king's] pleasure. In 1513, as Robert Marbury Jr. he was a feofee, along with Robert Marbury Sr. [his uncle], John Lenton [father of his son's future wife] and John Marbury, clerk. In 1514, his cousin William Blount, Lord Mountjoy, was the Queen's Chamberlain. In the same year, Robert Marbury, yeoman usher of the Queen's Chamber, was feodary noted above, for life. In 1517, he was appointed to be serjeant at arms, with 12d. a day in consideration of his services to Queen Catherine. In 1526, his yearly wage as serjeant at arms in the Royal Household was £18 5s, i.e., still 12d. a day.

In the Lincolnshire Rebellion of October 1536, Robert Marbury appears as follows: In the examination of Sir Edward Madeson before the King's Council, Madeson, with his brother John Madeson and both his sons, then went up into Castrefeld to see the number of rebellious and there met Sir Wm. Askew and Marbery the serjeant and one Bonctcene of the Exchequer. The rebels took them all except Boneteync and Marbury. (Let. & Pap. Hen. VIII, 11:225-26, no. 568.)

In a letter from Sir Robert Kyrkham to Richard Cromwell:

"Yesterday night late" he was at Stanforde with Sir William Parre and others when Marbery and Madyson, the King's servants came in, having escaped from the rebels who they say are 20,000... (Let. & Pap. Hen. VIII, 11:248, no. 619).

1st Earl of Portland. Chancellor of the Exchequer. Lord Treasurer of England.

    From Wikipedia:

Richard Weston, 1st Earl of Portland, K. G., was Chancellor of the Exchequer and later Lord Treasurer of England under James I and Charles I, being one of the most influential figures in the early years of Charles I's Personal Rule and the architect of many of the policies that enabled him to rule without raising taxes through Parliament.

Weston was the eldest son and heir of Sir Jerome Weston, High Sheriff of Essex for 1599, and the former Mary Cave. He was born at Roxwell, Essex, and was a student of the Middle Temple. He served as Member of Parliament (MP) for a number of constituencies including Maldon (1601–1603), Midhurst (in the parliament of 1604-1611), Essex (in the Addled Parliament of 1614), Arundel (1622), Bossiney (1624), Callington (1625) and Bodmin (1626). He was knighted in 1603.

During the reign of King James I of England, Weston was sent on embassies to Bohemia, Brussels, and Spain. On the last assignment, he negotiated for the restitution of the Palatine. Upon his return to England in 1621, he was made Chancellor of the Exchequer, and retained the post after the accession of Charles I; he proved a capable financial manager but incurred popular hatred as a (justly) suspected Roman Catholic, while also later earning the enmity of the (Catholic) queen, Henrietta Maria for refusing grants to her favourites. He opposed wars with Spain in 1623 and France in 1626, but managed to find ways of raising the money to fund them when required, even when it was impossible to secure the co-operation of Parliament.

Weston was elevated to the peerage on 13 April 1628, as Baron Weston, of Neyland. He was subsequently made Lord Treasurer of England and invested with the Order of the Garter. His policies proving highly unpopular, he escaped impeachment in 1629 only by the dissolution of Parliament. Nevertheless, he played an important role in the King's Personal Rule without Parliament, finding new sources of revenue while preventing any further increase in the King's expenditure, and being for a time the most influential of Charles's advisers. He persuaded the King to make peace with France in 1629 and Spain in 1630, removing the biggest drain on the treasury, and to sign the secret treaty with Spain in 1634. By the time he died in 1635, the Crown was solvent.

On 17 February 1633, Weston was created Earl of Portland. Lord Portland was married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Pincheon of Writtle in Essex. His second wife was Frances Walgrave of Boreley in Essex. He had three children by his first marriage, including Lady Mary Weston (2 January 1603-after August 1678), who married the 2nd Lord Aston of Forfar in 1629, and Lady Elizabeth Weston, who married John Netterville, 2nd Viscount Netterville. He had seven children by his second marriage, including his son Thomas, who later succeeded as 4th Earl, and Lady Anne Weston, the first of the four wives of Basil Feilding, 2nd Earl of Denbigh. His nephew (his sister's son), Jeremy Clarke, became a Governor of Rhode Island in the American colonies.

    Notes:

He arrived in New England sometime in the 1630s. He is one of TNH's four "gateway ancestors," albeit one about whom the scholarly consensus has been very much in flux. That the William Wentworth of New England was the man baptized in Alford seems almost certain. That the man baptized in Alford had many gentry and aristocratic ancestors seems indisputable. That he had a provable "royal ancestry" was long at issue, but several recent articles in The American Genealogist would appear to have finally sorted matters:

Cumulatively, these articles establish that the immigrant Wentworth's extensive medieval ancestry includes such crowned heads as King John of England; Alfonso IX of León and Galicia; Jeane de Briene, the Crusader "king" of Jerusalem; and (despite previous descents having been disproved) William "The Lion" of Scotland.

"William Wentworth (1616-1697) was a follower of John Wheelwright, and an early settler of New Hampshire. Coming from Alford in Lincolnshire, he likely came to New England with Wheelwright in 1636, but no records are found of him in Boston. When Wheelwright was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for his role in the Antinomian Controversy, he established the settlement of Exeter, New Hampshire, and Wentworth followed him there and then to Wells, Maine. After Wheelwright left Wells for Hampton, New Hampshire, Wentworth went to Dover, New Hampshire, and this is where he lived the remainder of his life. He was the proprietor of a sawmill, and held several town offices, but is most noted for being an elder in his Dover church for nearly 40 years. He had 11 children with two wives, and has numerous descendants, including many of great prominence." [Wikipedia]

He was a signer of the Exeter Combination.

His near descendants included his grandson John Wentworth, Lieutenant Governor of New Hampshire 1717-1730, and New Hampshire governors Benning Wentworth (governor 1741-1767) and Sir John Wentworth (governor 1767-1775); also John Wentworth, Speaker of the New Hampshire House 1771-1778.

A book-length biographical study of him is William Wentworth, Puritan Preacher by Susan Ostberg; Lincoln, Nebraska: iUniverse, 2006.

    Notes:

He came to New England in 1633, a year before his parents, along with the Rev. John Cotton and his uncle Edward Hutchinson. Shortly thereafter he returned to England, where he married Katherine Hamby. Upon returning to New England he supported his mother in the Antinomian controversy, for which he was disarmed; he then followed his family to Rhode Island, where he was one of the signers of the Portsmouth Compact, 7 Mar 1638. In 1642 he and John Leverett were sent on an embassy to the Narraganset.

"His name appears in the roll of freemen at Newport in 1641, but he seems to have retained his connection with Boston, for all his children were baptized there from 1637 to 1658. He probably returned there after his father's death. […] Edward Hutchinson became a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company in 1638, was Lieutenant in 1654, and Captain in 1657. He served in King Philip's War with the Massachusetts forces as chief officer of cavalry, [and] was mortally wounded in an Indian ambuscade near Wickabaug Pond, West Brookfield, Mass." [John Denison Champlin, citation details below]

    From Wikipedia:

Jeremy Clarke (also known as Jeremiah Clarke) was an early colonial settler and President of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. Born into a prominent family in England, he was a merchant who came to New England with his wife, Frances Latham, and four stepchildren, settling first at Portsmouth in 1638, but the following year joining William Coddington and others in establishing the town of Newport. Here he held a variety of civic positions until 1648 when Coddington's election as President of the colony was disputed, and Clarke was chosen to serve in that office instead. He was the father of Walter Clarke, another colonial governor of Rhode Island, and also had family connections with several other future governors of the colony.

Jeremy married Frances Latham about 1637 in England. Frances (daughter of Lewis Latham and Elizabeth) was born before 15 Feb 1610 in Kempston, Bedfordshire, England; was christened on 15 Feb 1610 in Kempston, Bedfordshire, England; died in Sep 1677 in Newport, Newport, Rhode Island; was buried in Common Burying Ground, Newport, Newport, Rhode Island. Selectman of Dover, New Hampshire, 1702.

Representative in the New Hampshire legislature, from Dover, 1711. "His descendants for six successive generations subsequent to himself have been in the New Hampshire legislature. [...] He married, in 1676 or before, Elizabeth _____, by whom he had seven children: Thomas, John, Paul, Benjamin, Gershom, Tamsen and Elizabeth." [Genealogical and Family History of the State of New Hampshire, citation details below.]

From The Wentworth Genealogy (citation details below):

"The time of his death can be arrived at only by reference to the Journal of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, in the office of the Secretary of the State, which contains nothing prior to 9 May 1711. He was present as Representative of Dover (his colleagues being Capt. Nathaniel Hill and Stephen Jones) at the sessions of June and July, September and October, 1711. The House adjourned 30 October 1711, to 15 November 1711. He was not present at that session, nor at the one commencing in February 1712. The Journal of the House, 6 May 1712, reads thus:

"'Upon the death of Mr. Ezekiel Wentworth, Capt. Timothy Gerrish was chosen Representative from the town of Dover, and this day appeared and was qualified.'

"The following is also from the records:

"'Memorandum. That Ezekiel Wentworth, Mr. Stephen Jones, and Capt. Nathaniel Hill had their debentures from October 23, 1710, to May 10, 1712. Capt. Hill, 73 days; Ezekiel Wentworth, 37 days; Mr. Jones, 25 days.'

"These '37 days' were doubtless all before 30 October 1711, and so it is impossible to tell how long after that day, or how long before 6 May 1712, Ezekiel died."
