"It is not every country lad who goes to Town with an uncle in Parliament, a Lord Mayor and a Justice of the Peace as near connections. William Dyer had good opportunities, and as we know he made good use of them." [Mark W. Bullen, citation details below. The MP and justice of the peace in question are presumably William Dyer's uncle William Rolfe (1594-1646); the mayor referred to is surely Sir Richard Deane, his uncle's father-in-law, Alderman of the Bridge Without in 1619 and Lord Mayor of London in 1628. Of course William Dyer later married the wealthy granddaughter of an earlier London mayor, John Swinnerton, but that was after his fortunes began to rise.]
