  1. 1.  Richard Belden was born about 1598 in Heptonstall, Halifax, Yorkshire, England; died in 1655 in Wethersfield, Hartford, Connecticut.

    Notes:

    He probably emigrated about 1638 with a group of Yorkshire Puritans led by Ezekiel Rogers, minister of Rowley, Yorkshire. He first appears in Wethersfield records in 1641.

    The two generations of ancestry given for him here were pieced together from fragmentary records by Paul C. Reed (citation details below) with the caveat that there is "no absolute proof" of his parentage. What Reed did prove was that he was absolutely not, as Belden family tradition long claimed, a son of Sir Francis Baildon of Kippax in the West Riding.

    Notes:

    Freeman, 1657; a merchant and tavern-keeper, and active in town affairs.

    Two pieces of evidence that he was the John, son of Richard Beldon, baptised 8 Feb 1634 at Ayringden are: (1), he said he was 27 years old in a deposition taken at Wethersfield in 1661, and (2) the medical journal of John Winthrop, Jr. recorded, in 1658, that John Belden's brother Samuel was 26 years old, matching up to the 1632 baptismal record of Samuel, son of Richard.

    John married Lydia Standish on 24 Aug 1657. Lydia (daughter of Thomas Standish and Susanna Smith) died after 6 Mar 1679. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
