  4. 29.  Sarah Camp Descendancy chart to this point (21.Lucretia6, 14.Abigail5, 8.John4, 4.Abigail3, 2.Sibyl2, 1.Deacon1) was born before 3 Feb 1782; was christened on 3 Feb 1782 in Ridgebury, Fairfield, Connecticut; died on 9 Aug 1818; was buried in Harvard Grove Cemetery, Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio.

    Notes:

familysearch.org has a birth record stating that Sarah Camp was born 15 Jan 1782, daughter of "Rev. Samuel and Hannah." This is linked, not to a contemporary record, but to a typed index card marked "Ridgefield, Vital Records, Vol. 1, Page 30."

This record of Sarah Camp's birthdate and of her parentage cannot be correct, for the following reasons:

First, Sarah Camp's gravestone says that she died 9 Aug 1818, aged 36 years. This would place her birth in 1782.

Second, the only wife of the Rev. Samuel Camp named Hannah was Hannah Garnsey, who died in 1777.

Third, Samuel Camp's wife who was alive in early 1782 was his second wife, Lucretia Barker.

Fourth, a transcription of Ridgebury church records on familysearch.org, taken from dunhamwilcox.net, says that Lucretia, second wife of Rev. Samuel Camp, died on 2 Feb 1782, and that Sarah, daughter of Rev. Samuel Camp, was baptized 3 Feb 1782 (by the Rev. William Wetmore of Bethel).

Quite obviously, Lucretia (Barker) Camp, second wife of the Rev. Samuel Camp, died of complications from the birth of Sarah Camp, because she, not someone named "Hannah", was the mother of Sarah Camp.

Sarah married Samuel Smith Baldwin on 10 May 1796 in Ridgebury, Fairfield, Connecticut. Samuel (son of Samuel Baldwin and Hannah Northrup) was born on 5 Jul 1777 in Danbury, Fairfield, Connecticut; died on 12 Jul 1822 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio; was buried in Harvard Grove Cemetery, Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio. Notes:

Many online sources, including findagrave.com and famouskin.com, give him as a son of Jacob Street Hemingway (1791-1863) and his wife Lucretia Smith (1785-1875). But Jacob Street Hemingway, a son of Jacob Hemingway (1764-1838) and Abigail Linsley (1767-1835), married Polly Hinman in Connecticut in May 1815, and she lived to 28 Mar 1885. And yet:

The 1850 census of Plymouth, Lichtfield, Connecticut lists Allen Hemingway, 42 years old, merchant, in the same household as his wife Harriet, 31, and a woman explicitly identified as his mother, Lucretia Smith, born in Connecticut 65 years old.

The 1860 census lists, in the same household, Lucretia Smith, born in Connecticut, 75.

The 1870 census lists, in the same household, Lucretia Smith, born in Connecticut, 85.

Meanwhile, the will of the aforementioned Jacob Hemingway, 1837, mentions his daughter Lucretia and his grandson Allen Himingway. According to the Wikitree page for Jacob Hemingway, other related probate documents identify daughter Lucretia as Lucretia Smith.

It is hard to avoid the conclusion that Lucretia Smith, who lived as an elderly woman for at least twenty years in the household of Allen Hemingway, was the Lucretia Hemingway recorded as born in Plymouth, Connecticut on 1 May 1785 to the aforementioned Jacob Hemingway and Abigail Linsley, that she married a man named Smith, and that for whatever reason, Allen Hemingway, for whom we have no birth record, adopted his mother's surname instead that of his Smith father. The dates line up perfectly, as does the 1837 will of Jacob Hemingway.

Allen married Harriet Louisa Tyler in 1843. Harriet (daughter of Anson Tyler and Harriet Linsley) was born on 10 Aug 1819 in Branford, New Haven, Connecticut; died on 16 Feb 1895 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois; was buried in Union Ridge Cemetery, Chicago, Cook, Illinois. From Britannica.com (accessed 16 Sep 2020):

Lucy Myers Wright Mitchell, née Lucy Myers Wright…archaeologist who, though self-taught, became an internationally recognized authority on ancient Greek and Roman sculpture.

Lucy Wright was the daughter of a missionary to the Nestorian Christians in Persia. In 1860 she was taken to the United States, and a short time later she entered Mount Holyoke Female Seminary (now Mount Holyoke College), South Hadley, Massachusetts, leaving in 1864 to rejoin her father in Persia. On his death the next year she returned to the United States. She married Samuel S. Mitchell in 1867, and they traveled together as missionaries to Syria. Her husband’s health failed soon afterward, however, and they left Syria; the rest of Lucy Mitchell’s life was spent mainly in Europe. By that time she had acquired a vernacular knowledge of Syriac and Arabic, as well as French, German, and Italian, and for a time she devoted herself to philological studies. Her dictionary of modern Syriac was never published, and the manuscript was ultimately obtained by the University of Cambridge.

In 1873 Mitchell turned her attention to ancient art. While living in Rome (1876–78) she gave parlour lectures on Greek and Roman sculpture. A number of museums and libraries granted her scholar’s privileges, and many leading archaeologists of Europe assisted her in her studies. In 1883 she published A History of Ancient Sculpture and a companion volume of plates, Selections from Ancient Sculpture. These works were well received by critics and fellow scholars, and in 1884 she became only the second woman to be elected to the Imperial German Archaeological Institute. From 1884 to 1886 she studied in Berlin for a major work on Greek pottery and vase painting. Mitchell fell ill, however, and died before completing her studies.

Lucy married Samuel S. Mitchell in 1867. Samuel was born in of Morristown, Morris, New Jersey. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

He earned his Bachelors (1873) and Masters (1876) at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire. After junior appointments (first in Ohio and then at Dartmouth) in 1886 he joined Johns Hopkins as a professor of classical philology. In 1887, he became a professor of Greek at Harvard, where, from 1895 to 1908, he was also Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

He was active in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philological Association, and similar organizations. From 1889 to 1906 he co-edited the Classical Review (later Classical Quarterly) and from 1897 to 1906 he was chief editor of the American Journal of Archaeology.

In 1893 Wright met the Indian Hindu monk Swami Vivekananda, who greatly influenced him. Wright described Vivekananda as "more learned than all our learned professors put together."

  1. 55.  John Turner Sargent, Sr. Descendancy chart to this point (49.Dagmar10, 41.Annette9, 34.David8, 26.William7, 19.Noah6, 13.Submit5, 7.Ithiel4, 4.Abigail3, 2.Sibyl2, 1.Deacon1) was born on 26 Jun 1924; died on 5 Feb 2012 in New York, New York.

    Notes:

"John Sargent, Former Doubleday President, Dies at 87." The New York Times, 8 Feb 2012:

John T. Sargent, who as president and later chairman of Doubleday & Company oversaw its expansion from a modest-size family-controlled book publisher to an industry giant with interests extending into broadcasting and baseball, died on Sunday at his home in Manhattan. He was 87.

The death was confirmed by his son, John T. Sargent Jr., the chief executive of Macmillan, the publishing company.

Mr. Sargent, who was already working for Doubleday when he married Neltje Doubleday, granddaughter of the company's founder, Frank Nelson Doubleday, in 1953, was named president and chief executive in 1961. At the time, the company was largely a trade book publisher; it also ran a book club, a New York bookstore and a modest printing concern.

Over the next 17 years, in partnership with Nelson Doubleday Jr., grandson of the founder, Mr. Sargent worked to expand all of those enterprises, largely succeeding in spite of a divorce in 1965 and an insurrection by a minority of the company's shareholders, led by his former wife, who wanted it to go public.

By 1979, the year after he left the presidency and was made chairman, Doubleday was publishing 700 books annually. The company had bought a textbook subsidiary and the Dell Publishing Company, which included Dell paperbacks. It was operating more than a dozen book clubs, including the mammoth Literary Guild; more than two dozen Doubleday bookshops across the country; and four book printing and binding companies.

In addition, Mr. Sargent led the company's expansion into radio and television broadcasting and film production. As chairman, he was involved in the company's purchase of the New York Mets in 1980.

The Doubleday company eschewed publicity and the prying of journalists. "The Sphinx Called Doubleday" was the headline on a 1979 article about the company in The New York Times, which described its publishing ethos this way: "There is no class of book that is considered a 'Doubleday book,' nor is there any book that would automatically be judged unsuitable for the Doubleday imprint. Generally speaking, the house frowns on books loaded with sex, it would be unlikely to publish an anti-Kennedy book since Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis is an editor there, and it doesn't exhaust itself trying to lasso serious literature."

The company may have been known for its secretive ways, but Mr. Sargent was visible among the New York elite, both during business hours and after. A strapping man, dapper and sociable, he was a voracious reader, an erudite speaker and, at one time, a poetry editor who worked with Theodore Roethke, the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner, who became a friend and, according to family lore, spent more than one night sleeping in the Sargent bathtub after an evening of imbibing.

He dined with his famous authors — who included Daphne du Maurier, Peter Benchley, Alex Haley, Leon Uris and Stephen King — and other notable friends; attended A-list parties with socialites like Brooke Astor; frequented the opera; hobnobbed with movie stars. He was a friend and frequent escort of Mrs. Onassis, and hired her as an editor at Doubleday.

"The guy liked dressing up in a tux and going out," his son said. "The publishing world was his world, and the social aspect was part of it. It all folded together."

John Turner Sargent was born on June 26, 1924, and spent his early years in Cedarhurst, on Long Island. (No one in the family knows where, exactly, he was born, his son said, and his birth certificate has not yet been found.) His grandfather was the well-known botanist Charles Sprague Sargent; his father, Charles Jr., worked in finance. He went to St. Mark's School in Massachusetts and spent a year at Harvard before joining the Navy. Prevented from fighting overseas because of a punctured eardrum, he spent the war years "loading bombers in Florida," his son said.

After his discharge he worked briefly for Time magazine and then began at Doubleday, writing book jacket copy, in the late 1940s. Over the next several years he read manuscripts, sold syndication and subsidiary rights, worked as an advertising manager and editor and was business manager of several publishing divisions. As president of the company, he succeeded Douglas Black, who had succeeded Nelson Doubleday Sr.

Mr. Sargent met Ms. Doubleday, a painter who now lives in Wyoming, when he was 28 and she was 18. After their divorce she waged a long battle, enlisting some other shareholders, to get the company to sell shares to the public, but her mother, her brother and her former husband all lined up against her and the effort failed. The company was finally sold to the German conglomerate Bertelsmann in 1986.

A longtime colleague of Mr. Sargent, Samuel S. Vaughan, who served the company as editor in chief and publisher, died on Jan. 30.

In addition to John Jr., Mr. Sargent's survivors include a daughter, Ellen; six grandchildren; his wife, the former Betty Nichols Kelly, whom he married in 1985; and two stepchildren, Elizabeth Lee Kelly and James Hamilton Kelly.

Jonathan Edwards. Thus Aaron Burr's first cousin six times removed has served for years on the board of Eliza Hamilton's orphanage.

    Notes:

She was a poet and painter of note, generally under the name "Gene Derwood."

Edwin Honig, "Gene Derwood's Poems--An Observance." (Poetry 89:43, October 1956):

AT HER DEATH IN 1954 Gene Derwood left a manuscript of thirty-eight poems and more than 150 paintings. The poems have been brought out in a volume (The Poems of Gene Derwood, with a memoir by Joseph Bennett, New York, Clarke & Way, Inc., 1955) introduced by Joseph Bennett. Her paintings are generally little known except perhaps for the striking impressionistic portrait of Dylan Thomas in a red shirt and a humming bird for a necktie which was re produced in a recent number of New World Writing. Although Gene Derwood will be remembered for her poems, her paintings have something of the same intensity, though not the deep assurance, of her poetry. Several of these, as well as the work sheets of her poems, are now in the possession of the Harvard libraries.

Her work is arresting for its solid vigor, its generally acute discomfort, and its fierce resistance to anything like easy assimilation. Yet she is far from being an obscure or hermetic poet; her vivid, strongly eclectic work is wrung by a tough joy and a mantic, heavily charged, almost nightmarish urgency. Technically, she is not an "original" poet. Her meters and strophes are largely conventional and, I think, rather deliberately so, since part of her expressive strength certainly derives from a tradition (apparently English rather than American) which is markedly religious, metaphysical, idiosyncratic, inward regarding, apocalyptic and lyrical by turns. It is variously in line with the idioms and aims of such poets as Herbert, Blake and Hopkins; in its authority-despite-its-unevenness, the poetry also recalls Hardy, Owen, Barker and Crane. If she is unlike some of these in being inventive rather than original, she is like them all in being an undeniably genuine poet. The source of each poem is in its matter (not manner) in its occasion, in its facing up to and its bare handling of a human mystery which cannot ever wholly reveal itself.

It is, in fact, a curiously true book since the effect of all the poems is greater than any particular poem, momentarily rising above the rest, can itself proudly urge, and greater than the gradually engaged reader himself is likely to understand in urging one poem's superiority to the rest. The true-bookness is the impact of all the poems together in which one is aware of the spirit which, once awakened, creates a body and so becomes more than a performance in the words and shapes that one enjoys in different poems. The whole book achieves something that reaches beyond the poems, like the force of prayer which becomes the prayer's fulfillment, a constant benediction. Reading through it, one is peculiarly sensitive to the risks taken and seemingly succumbed to, but then suddenly transcended, awakening, discovering an unperceived life like a dark nebula suddenly defined against the light. One recognizes the life that, having passed into the poems, surpassed its moulds, its forms. And yet one wonders how it came to be a life formed so close to our noses, but strangely different from anything we know. So familiar because it signifies and seals the times we live in. So different from what we merely know because it needed to be imagined first; it needed a poet to risk utterly failing to make it before it could be conceived, visioned, and discovered in forms as factual and as self-demanding as our own bodies. It is therefore also a true book because the poems are not all equal, because there are gross falterings, strained diction, unwieldy puns that scrape against beautifully shaped utterances. The truth is in the making which one is thus allowed to witness; the expense entailed in making mistakes was necessary to the creation of the spirit's body which lives so firmly in all the poems.

Such poems remind us that poetry is nothing if not a profession, in the old sense a profession of faith, of true saying and truth-making. It is not a profession in the sense of the selling of poems or the launching of the maker on a career of serving up balms and certitudes in exchange for social status or literary rank. Gene Derwood's poems are free from any taint of professionalism; they sell nothing, not even their own frequently accusatory cries. They demand life in exchange for the life they create. They demand the reader's faith that life exists precisely where it is most devalued, fragmented and abjured. The example of her work suggests that there is a poetry which by being so intensely and sharply formed, so weighted in its mazed integrity, is of such a different order of utterance from the poetry of most professionals as to constitute a different species. In writing too few rather than too many poems, and in writing under no obligation other than that of the poem's urgency, many of her lines go deep as a diamond drill through rock, A dark hard beauty emerges, and a failure, frequently, that resembles success but is better than success.

Fastened and fasting in the bed-rock man
The assainted, snuffed-down halo strives to rise.
    .....
Mountains of dove-tailed pebbles and words wordened.
The newest prism is moulded from the last.
    .....
The moon still shines beside the daytime star,
The waters weave, rain cools, dunes move, grain grows,
Soft words bring soft replies, muscles expand.
    (N. B., Symmetrians)

    Beautiful always the littoral line,
Jointure of ocean and earth where globe winds lean
Over the lace whence Venus rose, the sands
From which little-less-than-gods flung history's sail,
Round wave, round shell, and myth-bound lands.
    (The Innocent)

The body housed, the body's firm pale bole
Clothed, the body's self a blank abiding.
    .....
Walking or languid through the night or day,
Something familiar for a hiding wall
We carry, as a glove or stare or play
Of lips and brows. That's just a stall
That balks no frankness of the essence,
The too lightning truth of what we are
No man can hide the presence or the absence,
We've come too quickly and too far.
