    Notes:

    Lewis Smith appears in the 1860 census living with his parents Ezra and Elizabeth Smith at Middletown in Frederick County, age six.

    According to his obituary in the Pomona Progress Bulletin (citation details below), he came from Maryland to Vancouver, Washington around 1907, then retired to Pomona, California in 1922. He is described as having been in "the general mercantile business for many years, retiring in 1921."

    Roy H. Wampler's account of his moves varies somewhat from the above; according to Wampler (citation details below), Lewis Carlton Smith was at Graceham, Maryland in 1890; Vancouver, Washington in 1898 and 1918; San Jose in 1904 and 1912; and Pomona from 1926 on.

    Also according to the Progress Bulletin obituary, his funeral was on 15 May 1937 at "the English Lutheran church" and he was entombed "in Inglewood mausoleum." We have been unable to determine precisely where these places are or were. There is an Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, California, in Los Angeles County, but it's a good forty miles away from Pomona.

    Lewis Carlton Smith and his wife Joanna May Derr were second cousins, both being great-grandchildren of Philip Derr and Barbara Koogle.

    Lewis married Joanna May Derr on 29 Nov 1882 in Frederick County, Maryland. Joanna (daughter of David Derr and Sarah Ann Smith) was born on 29 Aug 1859 in Maryland; died on 11 Dec 1943 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    The 10 Oct 1904 record of her and William S. J. Derr's license to marry includes a handwritten, signed note from her father identifying himself as Lewis C. Smith an saying "I hereby give consent to the marriage of my minor daughter Edith M. Smith who was seventeen years of age Jan 5th 1904." More public records should be so gratuitously rich in genealogically-relevant information.

    Edith May Smith and her husband William Samuel Derr were double third cousins through their shared Derr ancestry, triple fourth cousins through their Koogle forbears, and fourth cousins via their Smith ancestors.

    Edith married William Samuel Toms Derr on 11 Oct 1904 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Clark County, Washington. William (son of Cornelius Edward Derr and Mary Eve Metzger) was born on 11 Nov 1875 in Myersville, Frederick, Maryland; died on 1 Sep 1919 in Oregon City, Clackamas, Oregon; was buried in Old Vancouver City Cemetery, Vancouver, Clark, Washington.
