Luther Sr., son of Ebenezer and Ruth Gates Hemenway, was born in Framingham January 2, 1787 and came to Marlborough with his parents when but six months old. He married, for his second wife, Eliza Cummings on October 26, 1813. She was of a well-known and honored New Hampshire family. He was a blacksmith by trade and had a shop in Marlborough and was familiarly known as Captain Hemenway. He was a stanch man, an old-time Whig, interested in educational affairs, and was one of the number who formed the Social Library Association. He removed to Jaffrey, where he died February 13, 1872.

She is named ("my daughter Sarah Towne") in her father's will, written 1871, and the records of his probate include a note from Sarah Towne dated 2 Aug 1873 acknowledging receipt of thirty dollars, her share in the estate.

Sarah married Warren C. Towne on 15 Nov 1840 in Framingham, Middlesex, Massachusetts. Warren (son of Enos Towne and Lucy Browning) was born on 15 Sep 1815 in Barre, Washington, Vermont; died on 4 Nov 1895 in Keene, Cheshire, New Hampshire; was buried in Woodland Cemetery, Keene, Cheshire, New Hampshire. The 1880 and 1900 US census both say that her father was born in Vermont and her mother in New Hampshire. As of the 1900 census she was a widow.
