He was knighted for his service at Agincourt. "Sir Richard, a major landowner in south-west Lancashire, fought in France under Henry V and was knighted. In 1420 or 1421 he returned to England, and in 1424 engaged in a violent dispute with the Stanleys for control of Liverpool, where the Stanleys had a tower--in 1421 Molyneux had been appointed constable of Liverpool Castle and steward of West Derby and Salford. These offices he retained, and on 10 February 1441 obtained a renewal of the grant of 1421 for the lives of himself and his eldest son, who was by now married to Elizabeth, almost certainly the daughter of Sir Thomas Stanley. In 1446 the offices were made hereditary, and were subsequently exempted from the Acts of Resumption of 1450 and 1451. But whereas the act of 1450 named Sir Richard Molyneux as beneficiary, that of 1451 excepted 'Richard Molyneux, Esquier, one of the Huishers of oure Chambre' (RotP, 5.315), showing that the elder Richard Molyneux had died in the interim."
