    Rector of Odell, Bedfordshire.

From The Bulkeley Genealogy by Donald Lines Jacobus (1933):

(Rev.) EDWARD BULKELEY,D.D., second son of Thomas Bulkeley of Woore, Shropshire, by his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Randall Grosvenor, was born not far from 1540. He matriculated pensioner from St. John's College, Cambridge, Michaelmas, 1555; Scholar, 1555; B.A., 1559/60; M.A., 1563; B.D., 1569; D.D.. 1578; Fellow, 1560. He obtained the rectorship of Odell in Bedfordshire, probably in 1571. He "compounded" for the living at Odell, 6 Mar. 1571/2, as is shown by the Bishops' Certificates of the Diocese of Canterbury. This means that he then paid to his superior his first year's salary, as was then the established practice in the English Church. [...]

It is very difficult to learn much of the personal history of a minister who lived in the sixteenth century and who, by the very nature of his calling, did not figure in the political annals of his generation. He was Prebend of Chester, 1574; of Westminster, 1583; of Lichfield, 1594; and was Vicar of St. Mary, Shrewsbury, 1578-82. We know that he was one of the commissioners appointed by the Bishop of Lincoln in 1608 for the 'Levye of Armour' in Bedfordshire among the clergy.

We owe to the late Col. C. E. Banks the following interesting item, from Shrewsbury Corporation Record, Burgess Roll, 1580: Edward Bulkeley of Shrewsbury, professor of theology, son of Thomas, admitted burges and has issue: Nathaniel, aged 6; Mary, aged 13; Frances, aged 12; Judith, aged 10; Martha, aged 8; Deborah, aged 5; Dorcas, aged 3; Elizabeth, aged 1. [...]

Dr. Bulkeley was a moderate Puritan; he resigned his pastorate in 1609, probably because of increasing age, and died at Odell early in Jan. 1620/1. His burial on 5 Jan. 1620/1 was entered in the Odell registers by his son Peter, who had succeeded him as Rector.

His relationship to the Parliamentary cause in the English Civil War is extraordinarily complex and beyond the scope of this database.

He was probably born, like his sister Elizabeth, in Keysoe, Bedfordshire. Contrary to his Wikipedia article and his entry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, he was not a great-grandson of Oliver St. John, first Baron St. John of Bletso; they were instead first cousins twice removed, being both descended from John St. John (d. 1525) and his wife Sibyl ferch Morgan ap Jenkin ap Philip.

    Notes:

One of JTS's eleven proven "gateway ancestors." Sister to the Oliver St. John who was chief justice of England under Oliver Cromwell.

"She…was known for her beauty, dignity and commanding presence. For a woman of those days she had received a good education which made her the fit companion of the scholars and statesmen who were her relations. Even in her old age she did not lose her youthful fondness for the great poets of England, Chaucer, Spenser and Shakespeare, with whose works her husband's library at Lynn was stored. It is clear from the circles in which she moved that she was well informed about current affairs and the rights of government and royal prerogative." [John Roger Scott Whiting, citation details below]

She was a half first cousin 4 times removed to Henry VII, through descent from Henry VII's grandmother Margaret Beauchamp (d. 1482). By the same common ancestor, she was a half fifth cousin once removed to her contemporary Charles I, making her possibly the seventeenth-century emigrant to New England most closely related to a sitting English monarch.

    Notes:

Arriving in 1634, he was the first of the extensive Bulkeley family to come to New England.

Matriculated pensioner from St. Catharine's College, Cambridge, Easter 1629, he studied with the Rev. Cotton in New England while boarding at his house. He was ordained in Marshfield in 1643. After fifteen years as the minister there, he was installed as his father's successor at Concord in 1659, and remained there for 53 years.

He is said to have been disabled in some manner ("lame and of a feeble constitution"). Of his preaching style, Grindall Reynolds had this to say in 1896:
One production of Mr. Bulkeley has escaped the tooth of time, -- his sermon delivered after the return of Captain Thomas Wheeler from Brookfield fight. It was a time to stir a man's soul. The whole Colony was convulsed. Every frontier settlement and every lonely farmhouse was in peril. Two of his parishioners had been slain. Two more came home so shattered that they lingered only a few months. The lot of these might any hour be the lot of his hearers. You read the sermon through from text to conclusion. There is not one throb of pathos in it. You cannot find an eloquent line, hardly an impressive sentence. It is a maze of Inquisitions and Instructions, of Applications and Uses, of Doctrines and Reasons, of Motives and Improvements, wherein the mind wanders and is lost. How could a tender human heart help breaking through the meshes of formality? And how was it possible for men, of rude speech possibly, but of strong and hot sympathies, to admire or approve such stiff and measured utterance?

With so little to guide it is not possible to speak confidently. Still this is certain. The younger Bulkeley has not left behind the impression of power which his father did. Apparently he had not his vigorous personality, his culture, or his great heart. Mather calls him "the worthy son" of a worthy sire. Clearly he was that. An honest, faithful, and devout man. But with all his real excellence one who did not rise much above mediocrity.

Gershom Bulkeley was an early graduate of Harvard University, receiving his bachelor's degree in 1655 and possibly his master's degree in 1658. After receiving his master's degree he might have married Sarah Chauncy, daughter of then Harvard President, Charles Chauncy. In 1661 became the minister of the Congregational church in New London, CT, where he served for roughly 5 years. He then became minister of the Congregational church in the town of Wethersfield, Connecticut where he served until 1677. He left the ministry and practiced as a physician in Glastonbury, CT.

When the Salem Witch Trials spread from Massachusetts to Connecticut in the autumn of 1692, he expressed considerable scepticism about the evidence, saying that he had heard nothing of any weight to convince him that anyone was guilty of witchcraft. In particular he argued that Marcy Disborough, one of the only two women accused in Connecticut who actually stood trial for witchcraft, was the victim of the malice of her neighbours. Mercy was founded guilty and sentenced to death, but received a reprieve. She was set free and died some time after 1709.

Gershom married Sarah Chauncy on 6 Oct 1659 in Concord, Middlesex, Massachusetts. Sarah was born on 13 Jun 1631 in Ware, Hertfordshire, England; died on 3 Jun 1699 in Wethersfield, Hartford, Connecticut. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    From The Farwell Family:

"He is buried in South Nashua, N. H. At the time of his death the town of Nashua, N. H., was a part of the old township of Dunstable, Mass. When the boundary dispute between Mass. and New Hampshire was settled this change in name was brought about. [...] Joseph Farwell is styled in the Old Dunstable records 'Ensign Farwell.' He was, immediately after his settlement in the town, employed in various offices in the town business. He was selectman in 1701, 2, 5, 7, 10, and also at earlier dates, highway surveyor in 1706, and on important committees in 1702, 7, 12, 16 and 17. In 1710 Ensign Farwell, Thomas Lund and Joseph Blanchard, selectmen, petitioned the Assembly for aid in supporting the ministry, and in 1711 it is recorded that they received £10 from the Assembly towards payment of salary of Mr. Paris. He was 'Ensign' of the Chelmsford Military Co., 1687-1695."
