Approximate birth date estimated from what the History of Parliament calls his first appearance as an adult in legal records, in 1403. "Among the Royal Servants" says 1397, but that can't be right if the History of Parliament is correct.
1455 death date dubious. The History of Parliament footnotes thus: "HP ed. Wedgwood 1439-1509, Biogs. 927, states that Richard Welby the elder died in 1455, but cites no evidence for this."Richard married Grace before Mar 1422. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

4. Richard Welby (3.Richard3, 2.Roger2, 1.Beatrice1) died after 12 Aug 1465; was buried in St. Katherine's, Moulton near Spalding, Lincolnshire, England. Notes:
Knight of the shire for Lincolnshire, 1450-52. The first Lincolnshire member to be styled as "gentleman."
The identity of his wife is confused. Maddison's Lincolnshire Pedigrees, page 1056, under "Welby of Multon," says "Joan, probably dau. of John de Rochford; owned Rochford Manor, East Barsham, Norfolk, 1468-86." The Wallop Family reproduces this language.
Maddison's Lincolnshire Pedigrees, page 1313, under "Welby of Gedney, Moulton, and Stirwould," says "Joan, dau. of .... Stynte (or Rochford), died 1488. M. I. Holbeach Church. ['Visitations of Lincoln 1562,' Agnes, dau. and heiress of Thomas Stynte.]" Note that despite Maddison's citation, we find no mention of anyone named Stynte in the actual 1562-4 Visitation of the County of Lincoln.
Finally, the Welby pedigree on page 192 of Thomas Blore's 1811 History and Antiquities of the County of Rutland identifies Richard Welby's wife as "Anne, dau. and heir of Thomas Stynte", probably deriving this from The Visitation of the County of Rutland in the Year 1618-19 whose Welby pedigree says the same thing in precisely the same words.Family/Spouse: Unknown.
