In this he was to some slight extent implicated, but acting on the advice of Archbishop Lanfranc, he crossed over to Normandy to the king, and disclosed the matter to him. The conspiracy having been crushed, the king kept Walthoef with him. But he was accused by his wife, Judith, of more than a mere knowledge of the plot. After a year's deliberation, during which he was imprisoned at Winchester, Waltheof was executed at Winchester, Hampshire 31 May 1075 (or 1076). Two weeks afterward the king allowed his body to be removed to Croyland Abbey, Lincolnshire, where the abbot buried him in the chapterhouse; his remains were subsequently translated into the church near the altar. At an unknown date, Judith was granted the manor of Elstow, Bedfordshire by her uncle, King William the Conqueror. His career was complicated by rivalry with the Scottish royal house over the honour of Huntingdon, the inheritance of his mother, Maud. He was a minor when his father died between 1111 and 1113, and custody of the estate, with the rank of earl, passed to Maud's second husband, David, future king of Scots. Following Maud's death in 1131, by which date Senlis had reached his majority, King David remained in control, despite Senlis's demands for justice. King Stephen then recognized Henry, son of David and Maud, as earl of Huntingdon in 1136 and again in 1139; and although Senlis had probably held the honour and earldom during Henry's temporary forfeiture (January 1138 – April 1139), it was only on the final collapse of Stephen's Scottish diplomacy in the summer of 1141 that his claims were fully realized. His comital standing remains a source of much confusion. The argument that in 1136 Northampton was 'detached from the earldom of Huntingdon and made a separate earldom for Simon' is difficult to accept. (Some modern authorities have even seen him as an earl of Northumberland — he was never such.) His earliest known appearance as earl of Northampton occurs in 1138 or early in 1139; and the evidence suggests that 'Northampton' and 'Huntingdon' were alternative names for the same earldom, which normally, though not invariably, also embraced Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire. One of Stephen's foremost adherents, Senlis fought at the battle of Lincoln on 2 February 1141, and was a commander of the victorious royalist army at Winchester the following September. His comital authority extended over Northamptonshire, Huntingdonshire, and Bedfordshire, and within the first two shires he exercised regalian rights and assumed full responsibility for county government, clearly at Stephen's bidding. Jocelin of Furness's life of Abbot Waldef of Melrose, Senlis's younger brother, contains important information on his career and character. Henry of Huntingdon believed that he and Eustace, Stephen's eldest son, were the most uncompromising opponents of Henry Plantagenet in 1153, and that peace was possible only because of their sudden deaths. He was a major benefactor of numerous religious institutions, and founded a Cistercian abbey at Sawtry in 1146–7, as well as a Cluniac nunnery, Delapré Abbey. He married Isabella, or Elizabeth, daughter of Robert, earl of Leicester, and was Leicester's named ally in his famous treaty with the earl of Chester c. 1150. He and his wife, who as a widow married Gervase Paynel (d. 1194) of Dudley, had a son and at least one daughter: Simon (III) de Senlis (d. 1184), the last Senlis holder of the earldoms of Northampton and of Huntingdon, and Isabel, who married William Mauduit (d. 1194) of Hanslope. Simon (II) de Senlis died in August 1153 in Northampton and was buried in St Andrew's Priory, Northampton.

While it had been known for some time that the mother of William was a "countess" Ida, her identity was only recently proven. As one of two known contemporary English countesses named Ida, the wife of Roger Bigod had already been a prime candidate [see Paul C. Reed, "Countess Ida, mother of William Longespée, illegitimate son of Henry II", TAG 77 (2002), which was going to press just as the crucial discovery was made]. Convincing proof of her identity as the wife of Roger Bigod was only recently discovered by Raymond W. Phair, who announced his discovery in the soc.genealogy.medieval newsgroup on 3 July 2002, and then published it in The American Genealogist [Raymond W. Phair, "William Longespée, Ralph Bigod, and Countess Ida", TAG 77 (2002), 279-81], citing a list of prisoners after the Battle of Bouvines in 1214, in which Ralph Bigod was called a brother of the earl of Salisbury. The parentage of Ida remains unknown, but see Reed (2002) for the possibility that she might have been a daughter of Roger de Toeni and Ida of Hainault.

Douglas Richardson's Royal Ancestry (2013) gives Ida de Tony as a daughter of Ralph de Tony and Margaret of Leicester. Richardson set forth his arguments for this in a 2008 post to soc.genealogy.medieval, reproduced below:

[...] For conclusive evidence that Ida, wife of Earl Roger le Bigod, was a member of the Tony family, see Morris, The Bigod Earls of Norfolk in the 13th Century (2005): 2, who cites a royal inquest dated 1275, in which the jurors affirmed that Earl Roger le Bigod had received the manors of Acle, Halvergate, and South Walsham, Norfolk from King Henry II, in marriage with his wife, Ida de Tony (citing Rotuli Hundredorum 1 (1812): 504, 537). Morris shows that Earl Roger le Bigod received these manors by writ of the king, he having held them for three quarters of a year at Michaelmas 1182 (citing PR 28 Henry II, 1181-1182 (Pipe Roll Soc.) (1910):64). This appears to pinpoint to marriage of Ida de Tony and Earl Roger le Bigod as having occurred about Christmas 1181.

For evidence that Ida de Tony was the mother of William Longespee, Earl of Salisbury (illegitimate son of King Henry II of England), see London, Cartulary of Bradenstoke Priory (Wiltshire Rec. Soc. 35) (1979): 143, 188, which includes two charters in which Earl William Longespee specifically names his mother as Countess Ida. Furthermore, among the prisoners captured at the Battle of Bouvines in 1214 was a certain Ralph [le] Bigod, who a contemporary French record names as "brother" [i.e., half-brother] to William Longespée, Earl of Salisbury [see Brial, Monumens de Règnes des Philippe Auguste et de Louis VIII 1 (Recueil des Historiens des Gaules et de la France 17) (1878): 101 (Guillelmus Armoricus: "Isti sunt Prisiones (capti in bello Bovinensi)...Radulphus Bigot, frater Comitis Saresburiensis"); see also Malo, Un grand feudataire, Renaud de Dammartin et la coalition de Bouvines (1898):199, 209].

As for Countess Ida's parentage, it seems virtually certain that she was a daughter of Ralph V de Tony (died 1162), of Flamstead, Hertfordshire, by his wife, Margaret (b. c.1125, living 1185), daughter of Robert de Beaumont, 2nd Earl of Leicester [see C.P.7 (1929): 530, footnote e (incorrectly dates Ralph and Margaret's marriage as "after 1155" based on the misdating of a charter --correction provided by Ray Phair); C.P. 12(1) (1953): 764 - 765 (sub Tony); Power, The Norman Frontier in the Twelfth and Early Thirteenth Centuries (2004): 525 (Tosny pedigree)].

For evidence which supports Ida's placement as a child of Ralph V de Tony, several facts may be noted. First, Countess Ida and her husband, Roger le Bigod, are known to have named children, Ralph and Margaret, presumably in honor of Ida's parents, Ralph and Margaret de Tony [see Thompson, Liber Vitae Ecclesiae Dunelmenis (Surtees Soc. 136) (1923): fo.63b, for a contemporary list of the Bigod children]. Countess Ida was herself evidently named in honor of Ralph V de Tony's mother, Ida of Hainault. Next, William Longespee and his descendants had a long standing association with the family of Roger de Akeny, of Garsington, Oxfordshire, which Roger was a younger brother of Ralph V de Tony (died 1162) [see C.P. 8 (1932): chart foll. 464; 14 (1998): 614; Loyd, Origins of Some Anglo-Norman Fams. (1951): 2; VCH Oxford 5 (1957): 138; Harper-Bill, Dodnash Priory Charters (Suffolk Rec. Soc. 16) (1998): 34 - 37, 39 - 40, 72 - 73; Fam. Hist. 18 (1995 - 97): 47 - 64; 19 (1998): 125 - 129]. Lastly, Roger le Bigod and his step-son William Longespée both had associations with William the Lion, King of Scots, which connection can be readily explained by virtue of King William's wife, Ermengarde, being sister to Constance de Beaumont, wife of Countess Ida's presumed brother, Roger VI de Tony [see C.P. 12(1) (1953): 760 - 769 (sub Tony)].

William the Lion was likewise near related to both of Countess Ida's presumed parents, her father by a shared descent from Countess Judith, niece of William the Conqueror, and her mother by a shared descent from Isabel de Vermandois, Countess of Surrey. Roger le Bigod and William Longespee were both present with other English relations of William the Lion at an important gathering at Lincoln in 1200, when William the Lion paid homage to King John of England [see Stubbs, Chronica Magistri Rogeri de Houedene 4 (Rolls Ser. 51) (1871): 141 - 142].

Thus, naming patterns, familial and political associations give strong evidence that Ida, wife of Earl Roger le Bigod, was a daughter of Ralph V de Tony.

Morris says that Ida de Tony was a ward of the king when the king married her to Roger le Bigod. That presumably means she was not yet 21 at her marriage, which occurred at Christmas 1181. If so, she would have to have been born no earlier than 1160.

Also, to be a ward of the king, your father would have been a tenant in chief of the king who left a minor heir in custody. The only requisite Tony male in this time period that would appear to fit that description would be Sir Ralph de Tony (husband of Margaret de Beaumont), who died in 1162, leaving a minor son, Roger. An estimate for a birth of Sir Ralph de Tony is hard to determine, but he was conceivable born as early as 1130, and probably no later than 1135. We know his parents were married in the reign of King Henry I who died in 1135.

As for the chronology of other parts of the Tony family. Sir Ralph de Tony's sister, Godeheut de Tony, wife of William de Mohun, had a grandson and heir, Reynold de Mohun, born about 1185. So Godeheut de Tony was born say 1135, give or take. Sir Ralph de Tony's younger brother, Sir Roger de Tony, had his son and heir, Baldwin, born about 1170. So Sir Roger was born say 1140, give or take.

In any case, the fact that Ida de Tony was a ward at the time of her marriage would seem to clearly indicate her parentage.

An email from Todd A. Farmerie to Marianne Dillow, reproduced in the same thread as Richardson's two posts above (the archives of the thread are somewhat jumbled, making it hard to tell the exact order of posts). It summarizes Farmerie's reservations about Richardson's identification of Ida de Tony's parents. In the scheme that Farmerie considers equally probable, Ida's parents would be Ralph de Tony's father Roger de Tony and Roger's wife Ida de Hainault:

I think you already had others point you to the group archives. Let me just say that this is not about confidence in an individual's work. It is a legitimate difference of opinion, two people, each equally qualified, using the same data, and reaching different conclusions.

I didn't want to get into another round of argument in the group, as it has been argued several times before. Briefly, though, everything that has been said about her being child of Ralph would also apply to her being sister of Ralph. All of the names, all of the associations, etc.

Whether she was daughter or sister comes down to how old you think she is, and we have no evidence. Thus, virtual certainty is a bit of an exaggeration. That she was of this immediate family is pretty safe, but which generation, there is room for doubt.

Let me also say this, and I just offer it at face value. This is not the first 'near certainty' that has been proclaimed with regard to her parentage. For years it was argued that it was almost certain she was a completely different person. Then a new piece of evidence comes out and we have seamlessly switched to a different near certainty. Basically, when someone says that something is a virtual certainty, they are doing it either because they think it is absolutely certain, and are simply recognizing that all history has a minute chance of revision, or alternatively, because they know it isn't certain, but they have convinced themselves that it is the right answer and are trying to make it sound better than it really is. This is not a 99.99% certainty, it is a 75% likelihood, coupled with a strong gut feeling and some gilding of the lily. That, at least, is my view.

I guess my real point is, don't take anything at face value. Mr. Richardson has made some insightful hypotheses. As far as I know, he was the first to guess that Ida, wife of Roger de Toeny was identical to Ida, mother of William Longespee. He had no evidence for it - it was just a strong gut instinct that led him to the right answer when proof was found a decade later. He has also reached some conclusions that are nothing but wishful thinking (such as his first 'certain' ancestry of Ida, which we now know is completely false). Both were expressed with equal certainty. Mr. Richardson is not unique in this. The same is true of others here, myself included. Don't just accept what anyone says. Look at all of the different opinions and ignore who is saying what, just take what seems the best solution from it, no matter who offers it.

Even if only one person has suggested a connection, look at the evidence and try out some other possibilities and see if they will fit as well. No one is right all the time - everyone has their biases, and to be good at this, it is important to move beyond the individual opinions and reach your own conclusions from the original data. (Sorry to preach.)

Finally, a post from the same thread setting forth a chronological argument for Richardson's position, and giving a reasonable guess as to her year of birth:

I think a reasonable time for Ida de Tony would be a birth c. 1160, her son William born 1175-1180, marriage to Roger Bigod in 1181, at which point she was bearing his children until the early 1190s or thereabouts, when she would've been in her thirties.

Having been forced to give his son to King John as a hostage in 1201, he was a member of the moderate or middle section of the baronage in the conflict between King John and the barons, remaining in attendance on the king until going over to the extreme party upon their taking possession of London on 24 May 1215. Going with them to Runnymede, he was elected a Magna Carta surety in 1215, and then withdrew to Belvoir. Although he was excommunicated by name by the Pope, along with de Quency and Mowbray, as a result of Runnymede, he refused to attend the Hounslow tournament on 6 July 1215.

He was prevailed upon to return to service in the fall, and was placed in charge of Rochester, but was forced to surrender it to John after a gallant defense lasting from 11 Oct. to 30 Nov. 1215, and was thrown into prison, narrowly escaping hanging.

In 1216, upon payment of a fine of 6,000 marks [£4000], he was released and regained his lands. He did homage to King Henry III, was entrusted with Sleaford Castle and a command at the battle of Lincoln of 19 May 1217, which earned him high favor. In 1219 and 1225 he served again as an itinerant justice.

To Tout, Fitzwalter was 'the first champion of English liberty' (DNB), and prefigured Simon de Montfort. There has been discussion in the past on the newsgroup regarding the placement of Ida Longespée, wife of Walter Fitz Robert, in the Longespée family tree. Complete Peerage, 5 (1926): 472 (sub FitzWalter) identifies Ida as "daughter of William (Longespée), Earl of Salisbury." The William Longespée intended here is presumably William Longespée I who died in 1226, not his son, William II, who died in 1250. If so, this would give Earl William Longespée I and his wife, Ela, two adult daughters named Ida, one of whom married Walter Fitz Robert, and the other who married William de Beauchamp. Curiously Complete Peerage, 11 (1949): 381-382 footnote k (sub Salisbury) confuses Walter Fitz Robert's wife Ida with her sister of the same name who married William de Beauchamp; it also misidentifies Walter Fitz Robert's parentage.

The identification of Ida, wife of Walter Fitz Robert, as a Longespée has traditionally rested on a pedigree of the Longespée family found in Lacock Priory cartulary. This pedigree lists the various children of William Longespée I, Earl of Salisbury, and his wife, Ela of Salisbury, including:

"Idam de Camyle, quam duxit in uxorem Walterus fil. Roberti, de qua genuit Catherinam et Loricam, quæ velatæ erant apud Lacok; Elam, quam duxit primo Guillelmus de Dodingeseles, de qua genuit Robertum") [Reference: Dugdale, Monasticon Anglicanum, 6(1) (1830): 501].

It is not known exactly why Ida Longespée is here styled Ida de Camyle in this record. I've assumed, however, that Ida may have had a brief Camville marriage previous to her known marriage to Walter Fitz Robert. If so, a previous Camvillle marriage would explain her use of the Camville surname as a grown adult. Ida's older brother, William Longespée II, is known, for example, to have married a member of the Camville family.

There are two contemporary records which prove that Ida, wife of Walter Fitz Robert, was in fact a Longespée. The first record comes from List of Ancient Correspondence of the Chancery and Exchequer, which source contains an abstract of a letter dated 1261-1263 from Ida, widow of Walter Fitz Robert, written to Walter de Merton, the king's chancellor, in which Ida specifically styles herself Ida Longespée:

"152. Ida Longespée, widow of Walter Fitz Robert, to the same [Walter de Merton, Chancellor]: to bail two of her men appealed of homicide. [1261-1263]." [Reference: List of Ancient Correspondence of the Chancery and Exchequer (PRO Lists and Indexes 15) (1902): 107-108].

Elsewhere I find that Calendar of Liberate Rolls 5 (1961): 93 likewise refers to Ida, widow of Walter Fitz Robert, as "Ida Lungespee:"

Date: 11 May 1162 -- "Liberate to Geoffrey de Lezinan, the king's brother, 40l. in recompense of a like sum received there of the issues of the manor of Henham [Essex] by the hands of Ida Lungespee." END OF QUOTE.

To date to my knowledge no one has discovered Ida Longespée's maritagium, although she certainly had one in marriage. Recently I encountered a record which evidently concerns her maritagium. The record in question is a Wiltshire pleading which dates from 1249:

"Walter son of Robert and Ida his wife, by Ida's attorney by writ of the present king, who brought an assize of novel disseisin against William Lungepeie for holdings in Scepperingge and Heniton, Farlegh' and Bidinham, have come and withdrawn by licence. It is agreed between them that Walter and Ida had put themselves utterly in William's grace for those holdings." [Reference: Clanchy, Civil Pleas of the Wiltshire Eyre 1249 (Wiltshire Rec. Soc. 26) (1971): 152].

The lands involved in this lawsuit can be identified as Sheepbridge (in Swallowfield), Hinton (in Hurst), Farley [Hill] (in Swallowfield), and Diddenham (in Shinfield), all in modern Berkshire but formerly in Wiltshire. These lands were apparently held by William Longespée I and his wife, Countess Ela.

VCH Berkshire 3 (1923): 267-274 states that Sheepbridge "belonged with Hinton in 1236 to Ela, Countess of Salisbury." Countess Ela named here was the widow of William Longespée I. VCH's statement regarding Countess Ela's holding of these lands is based on a charter found in Calendar of Charter Rolls 1226 - 57, page 221, whereby the king confirmed a grant of Countess Ela of various lands to Lacock Abbey, in exchange for "10 l. yearly receivable ...... .of the manors of Shiperige and Henton, and the advowson of the church of Winterburn Shyreveton."

Countess Ela's charter is undated but surely must date from around 1236. My files notes show the following information:

"In Feb. 1236 her son and heir, William Longespée, guaranteed her gifts to Lacock Abbey, while she agreed to surrender all her lands, rents and rights to him on 1 Nov. following. On 25 Oct. 1236 Ela, Countess of Salisbury, reached agreement with William Longespée, her first born son, that she may grant a moiety of the manor of Heddington, Wiltshire to Lacock Priory, which property fell to her on the death of Maud de Mandeville, Countess of Essex and Hereford. In the winter 1236 - 7 she resigned her custody of the county of Wiltshire. She subsequently entered her religious foundation at Lacock, where she took the veil before spring 1238." Following Countess Ela's surrender of her lands to her son, William Longespée II, he in turn granted the four properties in question, namely Sheepbridge, Hinton, Farley, and Diddenham, to his seneschal, Sir Henry de la Mare. The date of this grant is sometime before 1239-40.

In that year Sir Henry de la Mare was involved in a legal action concerning these four properties. A reference to this lawsuit may be found in Maitland, Bracton's Note Book 3 (1887): 286 - 287. This may be viewed at the following weblink:

So the question arises: When did Walter Fitz Robert and his wife, Ida Longespée, acquire their interest in the four properties? The answer to that question is not exact but surely it must have dated from the time that Countess Ela of Salisbury was holding these properties and before 1 Nov. 1236 when Countess Ela surrendered all her lands, rents, and rights to her son, William Longespée II. Walter and Ida can't have acquired their interest from William Longespée II, as once his mother released her lands to him, he almost immediately conveyed these four properties to his seneschal, Sir Henry de la Mare. One of these properties, Hinton, subsequently descended to Sir Henry de la Mare's daughter and heiress, Maud, wife of Peter de Montfort, and thence to her descendants [see VCH Berkshire 3 (1923): 247 - 260].

So besides knowing that Walter Fitz Robert and Ida Longespée obtained their interest in the properties before 1236, what else can we know? More specifically, why would Ida claim these lands, if her brother had granted them to his seneschal?

The answer to this question is not clear but a reasonable guess would be that these four properties were put up as Ida's maritagium when she was contracted to marry a Camville and that when the contracted Camville marriage failed to materialize or produced no issue, by the terms of the marriage contract, the lands returned to Ida's family. At that point, Ida's claim to the lands was essentially voided. This in turn would explain why Ida's brother, William Longespée II, felt free to grant these lands elsewhere to Sir Henry de la Mare.

In summary, adequate evidence has been located which indicates that Ida, wife of Walter Fitz Robert, was a Longespée. In 1249 Walter Fitz Robert and his wife, Ida, sued William Longespée II regarding four properties then in Wiltshire, but now in Berkshire. The four properties in question were apparently part of the inheritance of Ida's mother, Countess Ela, who appears to have controlled the lands until 1236, when she released her lands to her son, William Longespée II. Ida's rights must predate 1236, as William Longespée II almost immediately conveyed these properties before 1239-40 to his seneschal, Sir Henry de la Mare. Thus William Longespée II can not have offered them as Ida's maritagium. This in turn implies that Ida Longespée was the daughter of William Longespée I and his wife, Countess Ela, and not William Longespée II.

"Little is known of Roger de Quincy before 1219. He was probably the son whom Saer delivered to King John in 1213 as a Scottish hostage for the security of the Anglo-Scottish treaty of 1212. He emerged onto the political stage in 1215 when, along with Saer and the leaders of the baronial rebellion against John, he was excommunicated by Innocent III (r. 1198–1216), but did not figure prominently in the civil war that followed the king's death. [...]

"Roger de Quincy did not hold the prominence in politics that his father had commanded in England [...] but his wealth secured him an important role. In 1239 and 1246 he joined in written remonstrances from the English nobility to Gregory IX (r. 1227–41) and Innocent IV (r. 1243–54) concerning papal interference in English affairs. Association with the stirrings of dissatisfaction with the government of Henry III expressed in the parliaments of 1248 and 1254 led to identification with the baronial opposition in 1258. Volume III of The Scots Peerage (citation details below) says, on page 256, "[H]e never reached Palestine, as his death at Marseilles is recorded by the chronicler of Lanercost." And while the first portion of the chronicle of Lanercost appears to be online only in its original Latin, I can certainly make out in its 1248 section that "Patricius de Dunbar" "ex hac luce migravit" ("departed this life") in "Marfiliam."

"The same writer [presumably the Lanercost chronicler] tells also two stories which give us a very favorable view of the Earl's character. One is that the Earl had issued invitations for a feast, but many more guests arrived than preparation had been made for. When his steward informed him of the lack of provision thus caused, the Earl ordered the kitchen be set on fire, risking rather the loss of his house than the tarnishing of his reputation for hospitality. The other story, for which the narrator vouches, concerns his forgiving and lenient conduct to a robber whom he had rescued from the gallows and placed in a position of trust, but who tried to murder his master. The Earl, however, made light of it, and gave the rascal money to escape."

"[F]irst appears upon record as one of those Scottish nobles who, about August 1244, promised to observe the treaty of 1237, already referred to, and he was present in the Parliament of Scotland in February 1244-45. He was one of those Earls who took part in the coronation of the young King Alexander III, and he supported the party of the English King in the change of government on 20 September 1255. He was high in favour with King Henry III, and was deputed by him to attend specially on the young Queen of Scotland. He had a safe-conduct from the English King to go abroad in May 1259, but had returned in the following year. His grants to the monastery of Inchaffray were considerable. In 1247 he confirmed the gifts of his predecessors. In December 1257 he bestowed on the monks the advowson of the church of Cortachy in Forfarshire, which he had acquired by marriage, and in March following he gave certain serfs to them in property. In 1266 he gave them rights of building from the quarry of Nethergask; in 1268 and 1270 he granted certain annual rents, and he died between that and 23 November 1271. One chronicler says that he died in France, praising him as a man distinguished by birth and generosity, and munificent above all his compatriots. Thomas Lermont of Ersildun (Earlston), the celebrated bard and prophet, (commonly called The Rhymer), visited Dunbar in 1285, and foretold to the Earl the sudden death of Alexander III, who was killed by a fall from his horse on the sands of Kinghorn.

[...O]n the night preceding the King's death, Thomas having arrived at the castle of Dunbar, was interrogated by the Earl, in the jocular manner he wont to assume with the prophet, if to-morrow should produce any remarkable event, to which the bard, while "coming events cast their shadows before," replied, in the mystical language of prophecy: "Alas for to-morrow, a day of calamity and misery! Before the twelfth hour shall be heard a blast so vehement, that it shall exceed those of every former period. A blast which will strike the nations with amazement, -- shall reduce those who hear it to a state of insensibility, -- shall humble what is proud, and what is fierce shall level with the ground! The sorest wind and tempest that ever was heard of in Scotland." After this prediction, which was left to be fulfilled either by accident or the weather, Thomas retired.

There is no question that [Humphrey de Bohun, d. 1265, and his wife Eleanor de Briouze] did have a daughter named Eleanor, but she was the second wife of Robert de Ferrers, 6th earl of Derby, from June 1269 whereas the other Eleanor de Bohun, wife of John de Verdon, was widowed in 1274. The latter couple had a son named Humphrey—presumably after her father—born on 4 June 1267, and she had the Verdon and Bohun bearings on her seal. The Eleanor married to Robert de Ferrers was described as sister to Humphrey de Bohun, 3rd earl of Hereford (son of Humphrey who died in 1265 by Eleanor de Braiose) in the close roll for 1290 (Edward I, vol 3 p. 119: "Humphrey de Bohun, earl of Hereford, and Eleanor de Ferrariis, his sister, acknowledge that they owe to Robert de Tibotot and Matthew de Columbariis, the king’s butler, 200l.; to be levied, in default of payment, of their lands and chattels in cos. Hereford and Essex"). Two witnesses at the IPM of this Eleanor's son John, 1st lord Ferrers of Chartley, quoted in CP vol. 5 pp. 305-306 note (d), placed her as the granddaughter of Humphrey de Bohun who was clearly the 2nd earl of Hereford and 7th of Essex.

The most likely answer seems to me that John de Verdon's wife Eleanor de Bohun was a paternal half-sister of Humphrey the husband of Eleanor de Braiose, i.e. a daughter of the 2nd earl of Herford by his second wife, Maud de Avenbury. This would account for her evident family connection as well as the chronology placing her apparently around 20 years younger than the daughters of the 2nd earl by his first wife, Maud de Lusignan.

The double Verdon-Bohun marriages posited by [Mark S. Hagger, The Fortunes of a Norman Family, The Verduns in England, Ireland, and Wales, 1066-1316], including his Matilda who was actually named Margery or Margaret to John's son Theobald I, are somewhat downscale socio-politically from the Ferrers marriage of the 3rd earl's sister. Maybe Margery was also a near-contemporary half-blood aunt of the 3rd earl, another daughter of the 2nd earl by Maud de Avenbury. At any rate Hagger's placing her as a sister of the third earl would entail a second-cousin marriage between her son Theobald II de Verdon and Maud de Mortimer, both in that case great-grandchildren of William de Braiose and Eve Marshal.

Notes:

She has long been widely held to be a daughter of the Humphrey de Bohun who died in 1265, in the lifetime of his father, and who as a result never held the earlship of Hereford possessed by both his father and his son.

In a 2 Dec 2020 post to soc.genealogy.medieval, Peter Stewart argued that she may instead have been a daughter of that Humphrey's father, the Humphrey de Bohun who d. 1275, by his second wife, Maud of Avenbury.

In a 3 Dec 2020 post, Douglas Richardson defended her placement as a daughter of the Humphrey de Bohun who d.s.p. in 1265.

In subsequent posts in the thread, Peter Stewart defended his position, in particular making the point that if this Margery de Bohun had been a daughter of Humphrey de Bohun who d. 1265 and his (only) wife Eleanor de Briouze, her son Thebaud de Verdun's 1302 marriage to his first wife Maud de Mortimer, which produced issue, would have been a marriage of second cousins, both of them being great-grandchildren of William de Briouze and Eve Marshal.

No record exists of a dispensation for this Verdun-Mortimer marriage in the 4-volume published records of the pope of that time, Boniface VIII. Stewart pointed out that Boniface is known to have believed that dispensations from consanguinity rules should only be given for reasons such as the general good of the realm, and that the Verduns and Mortimers were "not in a league where this sort of reason could be proposed." As Stewart pointed out, "Defiance of canon law was not undertaken lightly in that era. The upside of trying, at the Verdun-Mortimer stratum of rank and power anyway, was hardly worth the very foreseeable downside."

This, combined with the chronological problems which are resolved by placing this Margary as a daughter of the older Humphrey de Bohun by his second wife, convinces us that this is likelier to be the correct solution.

In 1292 he claimed a third part of the Kingdom of Scotland, as grandson and h. of Ada, 4th da. and coh. of David, Earl of Huntingdon: his claim was rejected by the judgment delivered at Berwick Castle, on Monday after St. Martin [17 Nov.]. In Jan. 1296/7 he was about to go to Brabant, by the King’s command, in attendance on Margaret, the King’s da., Duchess of Brabant. II, by writs directed Johanni de Hastingges, and moreover is recorded to have been present in pleno parliamento domini Regi: on the morrow of Trinity 18 Edw. I [29 May 1290] with other magnates et proceres tunc in parliamento existentes, whereby he is held to have become Lord Hastinges. As Johannes de Hastinges Dominus de Bergeveni he took part in the Barons’ Letter to the Pope, 12 Feb. 1300/1. On 23 Aug. 1302 he was appointed Lieutenant and Seneschal of Gascony, during pleasure: he held the office till Aug. or Sep. 1104. On 22 May 1306 the King granted to him and his heirs the county of Menteith (except the land in that county which the King had previously granted to Edmund de Hastinges), forfeited by Alan, late Earl of Menteith, the King’s rebel and enemy. On 15 Mar. 1308/9 he had licence to grant, in fee, to John, his son, the manor of Aston Cantlow, the castle and town of Kilgerran, and other lands in Wales. He was re-appointed Lieutenant and Seneschal of Gascony, 24 Oct. 1309, during pleasure, and on 16 Nov. following had licence to set out from Dover with his household, horses, armour, silver vessels, &c.; he sur­rendered his office in the latter half of 1311. He m., firstly, at Braxted, Essex or Blunham, Beds, Isabel, da. of William (de Valnce), Earl of Pembroke, by Joan, da. of Sir Warin de Munchanesy, of Swanscombe, Kent, Winfarthing and Gooderstone, Norfolk, &c. She d. 5 Oct. 1305, and was bur. in Coventry Priory. He m., 2ndly, Isabel, da. of Hugh (le Despenser), Earl lf Winchester, by Isabel, da. of William (de Beauchamp), Earl of Warwick. He d. 10 Feb. 1312/3. His widow had livery of her dower, 11 Apr. 1313, and of the knights’ fees and advowsons of her dower, 20 Nov. following, all of which had been assigned to her by the King. She m., 2ndly, as 2nd wife, Sir Ralph de Mounthermer, sometime Earl of Gloucester: as royal licence had not been obtained for this marriage, on 20 Nov. 1318 and again on 2 Jan. following, the lands they held in dower were taken into the King’s hand. They were pardoned and their lands were restored to them, 12 Aug. 1319, for a fine of 1,000 marks: which also they were pardoned on 18 May 1321. She had charge of two of the King's daughters from Michaelmas 1324. Ralph d. 5 Apr. 1325, and was bur. in the Church of the Grey Friars at Salisbury, aged 63. Sir Fulk Fitzwarin, of Whittington, Salop, Alveston, co. Gloucester, Wantage, Berks, and Stanton Fitzwarren, Wilts, only son and heir of Sir Fulk Fitzwarin, of the same (who died 14 May 1264, being drowned in the Ouse, when endeavouring to escape, at the battle of Lewes)*, by Constance, daughter of Sir Ralph de Tony, of Castle Maud (now Painscastle), co. Radnor, South Tawton, Devon, and Flamstead, Herts. He was born at Whittington, 14 September 1251. On 29 April 1273 his fealty was taken, his homage being respited, and he had livery of his father's lands. He was with the King in the Army of Wales in 1282, and was about to go beyond seas in December 1284. In 1294, before going to Gascony on the King's service, he demised the manor of Wantag, Berks, to Master Henry Huse, for nine years. He was summoned for Military Service from 12 December 1276 to 30 June 1314, to attend the King at Shrewsbury, 28 June 1283, to a Military Council, 14 June 1287, to attend the King wherever he might be, 8 June 1294, to attend the King at Salisbury, 26 January 1296/7, to attend the Coronation, 18 January 1307/8, and to Parliament from 24 June 1295 to 16 October 1315, by writs directed Fulconi filio Warini, with the addition of seniori on and after 29 July 1314, whereby he is held to have become Lord Fitzwarin. As Fulco filius Warini dominus de Whitington he took part in the Barons' Letter to the Pope, 12 February 1300/1. He did homage and fealty, for his lands in Wales, to Edward, Prince of Wales, at Kenilworth, 27 May 1301. On 10 August 1301 the King ordered Fulk fitz Warin and Richard fitz Alan, Earl of Arundel, to abstain from attacking each other. On 14 April 1302 Fulk had licence to grant the manor of Alveston, co. Gloucester, to Fulk, his son, in fee. In 1310 he conveyed the manor of Whittington to John de Beauchamp of Somerset, who granted it to him for life, with remainder to Fulk the younger [his son and heir], and Alianore wife of the latter, and the heirs of their bodies, remainder to the right heirs of Fulk the elder. On 1 June 1311 he had licence to grant two parts of a moiety of the manor of Stanton, Wilts, to the same Fulk his son, in fee. On 16 October 1313 he was pardoned, as an adherent of Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, for any part he had taken against Piers de Gavastone.

He married, before 25 February 1276/7, Margaret, daughter of Gruffyd ab Wennonwen, called also de la Pole (Welshpool, co. Montgomery), Prince or Lord of Upper Powys, by Hawise, daughter of Sir John Lestraunge, of Knockin, Salop. He died 24 November 1315. His widow, who heId one-third of the manor of Alveston in dower, died 11 May 1336.

* He was son and heir of Fulk fitz Warin of Whittington (living Oct 1250), who m. 1stly Maud, widow of Theobald Walter, and daughter of Robert le Vavasur, and 2ndly, Clarice Dauberville. This Fulk had been outlawed, but was pardoned, 15 Nov 1203, his castle of Whittington being restored to him, 17 Oct 1204. He was son and heir of Fulk fitz Warin (living in Nov 1194), by Hawise, daughter and coheir of Josce de Dinan. The last named Fulk was son and heir of Fulk fitz Warin of Whittington and Alveston, who d. in 1170 or 1171, son of the shadowy or mythical Warin, of Metz in Lorraine.
