Joan married John Wentworth in 1314. John (son of William Wentworth and Isabella Pollington) was born in of Elmsall, Yorkshire, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

He was murdered at Brighouse by a gang that included Adam Beaumont; William, son of Thomas of Lockwood; William of Quarmby, of Hornby; and Thomas, son of Thomas Lascy. A few months later his son John was killed by the same group. Both murders led to the creation, in the 1500s, of a largely fictional ballad about the "Elland feud," the moral of which was, more or less, "don't mess with those violent, quarreling Yorkshiremen." In fact, the historical record shows that John de Eland was a justice of the peace who worked hard to uphold the law and that his murderers were people who held a grudge against him for doing his job.

The Coucher Book, Or Chartulary, of Whalley Abbey (citation details below) inserts a Thomas de Eland as this John's father, making Hugh his grandfather, but this doesn't seem to be reflected in any other source.

The aforementioned Cartulary makes this Richard a son of Francis/Franco/Frank le Tyes, who actually appears to have been Richard's grandfather. Our guess is that the error arises from a well-meaning misreading of a confusing aspect of of Dodsworth's "Yorkshire Notes: The Wapentake of Agbrigg" (citation details below). The father of the Richard of this page, who was a son of Francis/Franco/Frank, is generally called in various pedigrees Henry, but evidence exists that he was actually named Richard. On his pedigree chart Dodsworth says of this Richard's father "Henry le Tyes was living 1279 (more probably named Richard le Tyes)", and in the long footnote on pages 132-33 he refers to a Richard being "the son of Franco" -- we think meaning, by "Richard", the member of the le Tyes family who has often been called, probably incorrectly, Henry.

Two years before his death her husband made settlement of his lands, which were to remain to Margery, daughter of Richard de Radclyffe, for life; then to Henry, son of Henry de Bury, and in default of heirs, to Alice, Agnes, and Isabel, daughters of the elder Henry, failing whom, to Adam, son of Matthew de Bury, and his heirs. William de Radclyffe was called "The Great William," likely because of his physical strength. [...] This era of British history was a troubled time with feuds and lawlessness rampant. William and his brothers played an active part in the lawlessness, and were keen supporters of the Earl of Lancaster. William and his brothers John and Roger, cousin Richard, and others, were charged with breaking into the manors of Richard de Hulton of Ordsall at Ordsall, Hulton and Flixton. They were also involved with assaulting William de Butterwyck.

These attacks were all part of the brutal feuds which were prevalent during this period. They all had connection with the political disturbances of the reign as well as being part of family rivalries, and the jealousy of one manor against another in the quest for power. [...] William Radclyffe married his family with a shrewd eye to the main chance, and when he died in 1333, the Radclyffes owned sway over a very considerable part of [Lancashire].

"Thomas Wentworth was involved in at least two lawsuits over properties associated with earlier Wentworth generations and marriages. In 1515-18, he sued the abbot of Roche for a moiety of the manor of Stanton, for which his ancestor Agnes (Dronsfield) Wentworth had a claim. Sometime after that date, Thomas sued the Gascoigne family for properties in Skellale that had been granted to his ancestors John and Joan (Tyas) Wentworth by Alice Tyas, Joan's mother." [Terry J. "In 1459 there was an assignment from the old trustees of the Wentworth property, of whom Walter Calverley was one, to a new set of trustees (No. 371).
