Sighted this past Wednesday, during a hot slow eight-hour drive that should have taken six: two herons, two wild turkeys, a red-headed woodpecker, and a family of ospreys in their nest. The memory of the heat is fading; the birds remain splendid.
In just the past two months, I've seen wild jack rabbits and a mountain bear--without even having to venture off the property. The bear showed up on my family's house in Franconia Notch. We've been going there for 30 years, and there's no question the hunting restrictions have had a positive effect on population regeneration. The rabbits, I feel, are following us wherever we go. See them in my back yard in Newton, and saw them on the Cape at the house we rented this past week...(always makes me think of Watership Down...btw one of the most underrated animated films ever made...)
Best,
