Would that I could, but I can't so I won't.
Can we do something at CapClave?
That's a great idea. I don't travel well but will be at Capclave as it's local for us. I would love it if we could do something there.
P.J. Evans in #4, quoting the Friends of the Minneapolis Public Library, said
It's up: SPECIAL MEMORIAL GIFT / JOHN M. FORD BOOK ENDOMENT:
Just sent my contribution, plus a note nudging them about the missing "W" in "endoment", explaining that a lot of JMF's friends are nit-picking editors, writers and avid readers who notice these things :-)
Georgianna, if there's nothing official I'll hold a party. Not sure whether it'll be Sat or Sun night, as I want to see what's happening, and want to make sure there's enough time to make the announcement.
"So we waked him with a will
Ale and teardrops pooling,
And we often drank to him,
While the year was cooling..."
John Myers Myers, from Silverlock
(would that the last quatrain were as relevant:
"But he came back with the sun --
Death was only fooling.
Tammuz told us "Fill my cup --
I'm both dry and drooling.")
I thought they actually meant 'endoment'...'endo-' being a prefix meaning "within" or "coming from within" as in 'endoplasm' and 'endogenous', and '-ment' meaning what it means in 'astonishment' and 'bafflement'. Sort of "within-ness." Obviously an attempt to build a library, which generally has "book within-ness."
When you're sufficiently pedantic, everything makes sense.
in spirit also, though I never met him except through his words, in print and online.
Would that this were a day later ... I'm supposed to be in Minneapolis on the 28th anyway. On the 27th I will be in Chicago, alas.
I only met Mike a couple times, the last time several years ago, but if I were in town I would definitely come. As it is, I will make a donation to the Library fund.
In person. Just booked the flights.
No flowers, xeger, per the post at the nemisis_draco LJ community:

Lovely people that they are, there's a paypal donation button on their front page, at that!
(and like many others, I've sent summat along :) )
Mel and I are planning to attend...
When you're sufficiently pedantic, everything makes sense.
Xopher, can I put that on a T-shirt?
Edward Oleander: I'm sure you can, but you'd know better than I. In addition, you may. (No, I'm not really THAT pedantic. Just couldn't resist the joke.) Seriously, if you do it via CafePress or something, I'll even buy one.
Would that I could - but I never knew the man, just his work, and I'd feel like an intruder.
But I will be there in spirit.
I went to a bookstore yesterday. Scanning the shelves, looking for new stuff from my favorite writers. My eyes did their usual, automatic stutter-step through the Fs...
In spirit, dammit.
I did look flights, even with the whole "going into the US" thing, but it's just impossible.
I am organising a memorial reading of his work at Con*Cept the weekend of 14-15th October in Montreal, and I urge any local friends or fans of Mike's who can't make it to Minneapolis to come along to that. When I have the exact time I'll post in my LJ.
There in spirit. And I'll see what I can scare up for the endowment.
I'd love to do something at Capclave.
In spirit. As I should have said before making jokes and puns and stuff.
Would anyone going to Windycon be interested in doing a gathering to read from his work, or just talk? I can at least offer our hotel room, as the three of us sharing it were good friends of Mike when he was in Bloomington.
Donation made (thanks for the Paypal button); I'll be there in spirit; spirits will be raised in toast locally that evening...
#5 & #6 Can we do something at CapClave?
I'm working at trying to put together something for CapClave. More about this later.
In spirit, alas, but I shall read his words that day.
In spirit. Sigh.
I've just started reading Web of Angels, and am thinking about re-reading The Dragon Waiting. I should see if the Berkeley Public Library still has that copy of The Scholars of Night....
re #24
We will be holding a silent auction at CapClave to benefit the John M. Ford Book Endowment. Donations of course would be welcome. I'll post more of the practicalities as we firm things up.
Thanks to John Scalzi for the idea.
We raised $800 for the endowment at Capclave. Thanks to all who contributed.
